On May 4th, Pol. Lt. Col. Pramet Duangkaew led a team of tourist police officers on a mission to enforce an alcohol ban during the upcoming elections.

They were stationed in the busy Rama 9 market area and the popular Khao San Road, where they distributed flyers and conducted public relations activities.

The goal was to raise awareness about electoral laws among foreign tourists, hotels, entertainment venues, and other establishments, reported Siam Rath.

Maj. Col. Paramet stressed that this initiative was in accordance with the policies established by Pol. Gen. Damrongsak Kittipraphat, Commander-in-Chief of Police, Pol. Gen. Roy Ingphairot, Deputy Commissioner of Police, and the Police Commission (Security, Peace, and Order Center) during elections.

As a result, the Royal Thai Police tasked the Tourist Police with carrying out public relations efforts aimed at foreign tourists and hotel establishments in key tourist destinations. This campaign seeks to ensure compliance with election laws.

As a crucial component of the campaign, tourist police officers distributed leaflets in various languages to inform tourists and operators of shops and entertainment venues about the alcohol ban in the constituency.

The ban will be in effect from 6:00 p.m. on May 6, 2023, to 6:00 p.m. on May 7, 2023, and from 6:00 p.m. on May 13, 2023, to 6:00 p.m. on May 14, 2023.

Those who violate the ban may face serious penalties, including up to six months of imprisonment, a fine not exceeding 10,000 baht, or both.

These penalties are outlined in Section 147 of the 2018 Elections of Members of the House of Representatives Act Amendment (Version 2) B.E. 2566.

The Tourist Police's campaign represents a proactive approach to enforcing the law and fostering a peaceful electoral atmosphere.

Two questions: 1 - why is there a ban on alcohol sales when there is an election? 2 - why are they targetting foreigners (again) when the election has nothing to do with them?

Stupidity... tourists are not allowed to vote, and what is the main reason to ban alcohol sales for a day for a handling of that someone has to cross or color 1 small box on a paper....estimated time

But you can smoke Dope

Futile efforts, I don't think they even begin to have enough policemen to go around to enforce this impossible task, but they're sure making it like they do.

Why don't they just install breath analyzers at the polling stations.

In my country a lot of sober voters elected a sociopathic, congenitally lying sexual predator, so I'm not sure drunken people shouldn't be allowed to vote too.

"Proactivity", RTP's newest buzzword set to replace the tired "Transparency"...

Will the weed shops remain open?

Perhaps but the two that come immediately to mind are the USA - Trump, and the UK - Johnson.

And with Al Gore as his vice president, too.

Because the alcohol bans are not about preventing ‘drunk voters’.... but from preventing those in positions of power from influencing votes by ‘throwing events’.... (i.e basically, buying the masses booze and a general good time)...

Regulations such as this are antiquated and highlight the underlying juvenile mindset of Thai authorities so typical of the shortsightedness exampled by developing nations.

A complete lack of education and modern worldly ways.

These guys have got no flaming idea.

they complain about the fall in tourist numbers and then they put alcohol restrictions on for what? An election that everyone knows what the result will be. I will be elsewhere and I think there will be a few peeved off tourists. Time to get into 2023  thailand

And sell it

On a ‘normal’ night go round all the entertainment venues in the tourist areas in Pattaya and count how many Thai citizens are drinking in them.  I guess nearly zero, the Thai citizens will have stocked up days before and do what they normally do have a party at home.

How many unfortunate tourists landed in Thailand today, to find one of the very valuable days of their short 3/4/5 day "holiday" is dry, no bars open?

Go Thailand, continue with losing repeat visitors to this "holiday" destination!

If you on holiday do you not check what’s on the days you are there ?

I am sure if some can’t go with out alcohol for 24 hours they have an addiction problem.
