Pattaya — A group of business operators in Pattaya met with law enforcement officials to discuss extending the legal operating hours of nighttime businesses to 4 AM in a bid to boost tourism revenue.

The meeting, which took place on November 1st, was attended by Pol. Maj. Gen. Nanthawut Suwanlaong, Deputy Commander of Region 2 Police, Pol. Col. Thanapong Phothiti, Superintendent of Pattaya Police Station, Mr. Pharadon Chainaporn, Banglamung District Secretary and relevant officers from nearby police stations including Banglamung, Nongprue, and Sri Racha; and business operators in the Pattaya area.

The meeting was held to discuss the Thai Government proposal to extend the service hours of nighttime businesses in Pattaya until 4:00 AM. Some police were against the extension, but nightlife business operators were united in believing it should take place to boost tourism.

According to Maj. Gen. Nanthawut, he mentioned that the extension could contribute positively to the economy, but it could also lead to an increase in criminal activities and drinking-related accidents.

I thought I also read Pattaya was not included in the original list of testing areas!  That might well have been an oversight.... All roads lead to Bangkok! But Phuket was on the list too.

That's appropriate but it's not a Public Hearing per se unless it's open to the public, ie., citizens that could be potentionally affected adversely by the 4am closure.

Hold a "Town Hall" meeting with the Public as well Pol. Maj. Gen. Nanthawut.

i honestly do not care if they extend the venues closure time to 4am or not. But i don't think that these two extra hours of opening time will change anything at all in terms of tourism. In many countries (Europe at least), venues can close way past that time and stay open until the crack of dawn.. they just need to purchase the right license. If they really want to boost tourism, they might want to look somewhere else, like revamping/renovating their urban infrastructures and clean up huge chunks of their coastline/beaches which is downright terrible (dirty, full of plastics and so on..and so on...). Also, Thailand is not a cheap place anymore at all . If you are looking for magical tropical havens with cheaper prices and "cool" people...Thailand lags far behind...PS : i have been living/working in Thailand since 2011 (Bangkok). Things and people/mentalities have totally changed in just 12 years. But still a nice place to live 🙂

Extending bar trading to 4AM won't add one baht to the economy. Tourists have $X to spend on food and booze and if they do so at 3AM or 4AM they will spend less next day or later. All this will do is make the current breed of badly behaved idiots even more obnoxious, with a great increase in violence plus damage to health and safety. I am on the side of the cops. Who needs even more booze after 2AM? If they do, then they could drink in their rooms.

Just what we need. They knocked down the old house next to ours and built a big 4br "pool villa" available on Booking.com.So will the 3 am pool parties we suffer now become all nighters? Not a damn thing we can do about it.When we complain to the owner she says call me and I'll stop them. She never replies to our complaints until the next day.

Seriuosly thinking of selling up and moving after 16 yrs in this house.TIT, but where is it guaranteed to be quiet? Sleepless in Pattaya. It was a very quiet moo ban until this Chinese invasion. The new owners are investors and not residents and therefore don't give a rats ass.

Not many if any foreigners in the photo, do foreigners not own or run businesses in Pattaya ?

I don't see anybody except police and girls in blue uniforms, and a few other disparate Thais. In the main article, there are a lot of maps and what have you, but not much else. What exactly were they discussing? Any minutes available?

Staff, electric bills etc etc. But nobody has to stay open that late. I guess they could close any time they wanted. Only problem (yeah, only problem hoho) would be kicking out the clientele who don't want you to close. Why not scrap all opening times? Entirely up to you!

You've said, jokingly, what is actually the truth!

IF bars are allowed to open until 4AM, they're not being forced to do so. It just gives the owners / managers an option which they can asses using market forces.

IE, if you're the only bar for streets around and are getting (enough) customers wanting to stay until 4, stay open. If, however you're the only bar for streets around and are NOT getting customers wanting to stay until 4, then close.

It's really not too difficult!

Greed and corruption will overide any decision from a public hearing.

It was not a public hearing. It was a meeting of individuals with a vested business interest with a local administration with.....vested business interests.🙄

The only item that needed to be discussed is how much should the brown envelope contain if some dirtbag bar owner not in an "entrrtainment zone" wants to stay open til 4am.  Seems like the only purpose of this whole exercise.

Some police were against the extension,

They are against anything that prolongs their expected supposed working hours.  Note only SOME police were against it; the others were salivating at the prospect of a further two hours of banditry.
