Durability of Chinese EVs

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

After a lifetime of disappointment with chinese products, I am very hesitant to buy a chinese ev, in fact I won't.  Just got burned at mr diy the other day.  Buy chinese, buy twice...or even three times.  Nothing against the chinese personally, but they aren't exactly known for putting quality first.  Imo, they never, ever pass any value on to the customer.  Every single corner will have been cut and any "deal" you think you might be getting is sure to show its true colors down the road, with disappointment, regret, annoyance, and in the case of cars maybe even safety issues.  Chinese business practice = if the customer isn't pissed off, kicking and screaming, feeling like they got screwed, then they(the chinese) didn't do their job and left money on the table.

Also, really have to question the logic behind putting huge glass sunroofs on any car, much less an ev in a tropical country like Thailand.  Are they cool on hot days?  Is there any Thai person who wants to get sun in their face while they are driving?  The thought of sitting in traffic in bright sunlight with my head heating up while getting cold air blasted on me sounds absolutely nauseating.  Noticed the Teslas are the same.  Imagine the aircon uses a lot of battery to fight against the blasting midday heat in Thailand.  Can't be good for the range.  Not sure what they are thinking with this design other than add more gimmicky stuff to jack the price up.

I'm looking forward to buying an ev, but it's still a few years away for me.

So we have a fire at a phone battery plant and you think that is relevant to a discussion about Chinese EVs.

Do know that the BYD LFP Blade battery is one of the safest EV battery chemistries?

No probably not

I will ignore your suggestion that Mr DIY  - basically a Dollar Store is a good indication of the quality of Chinese EVs

Cars like the BYD Seal are a global car and as it competes with the Tesla Model 3 it has to compete on features. Most people don’t live in the tropics and expect features like a big glass roofs on high end cars.

Unlike the Tesla,  BYD put a silver coated glass roof on their cars. Here is a video I made about it. I haven’t added any glass film to my car.

Ok fair point. Ignore the spark plug comment, brain not engaged when writing my list.

So please explain?   Or is this just a defensive response due to buyers remorse?

Toddle off and read a little about battery tech in ev and you’ll see that it is quite different than your scooter and mobile phone.

Just to help you out a little, no ev don't not run on nicads.

Do you sell EVs?. I'm pointing out the cult behavior, it's not normal.. did you even read my post?

Just because people disagree with you doesn’t mean that they are in a cult, unless that cult is the cult of sticking to the facts rather than unsupported opinions.

The very fact that you are trying to highjack this discussion where the OP has specifically asked for comments from those with experience with Chinese EVs and you clearly have none, shows you are the one with cultish tendencies.

I don’t sell EVs

Yes I read your post and no you do not come across as “fair and balanced”

Modern ICE cars can be silent too . The tyres make noise too and EV's are heavier.

They can be fairly quiet, but no comparison. I drive what is considered a refined, mid-level "luxury" ICE, European Car of the Year winner. By ICE standards it is quiet. But from the outside it is not - the engine, the fan, extremely noisy, as are all ICE vehicles.

However after spending three days in a BEV version of the same car when I got back in mine it was no longer refined or quiet, it felt very noisy, extremely sluggish, and I could feel the vibrations. It is all relative.

OP, until a lot more water has passed under the bridge you are no going to get solid answers about the durability of Chinese EV's or other important factors to consider when purchasing a new vehicle.

Our house masters sister has recently moved from Honda Jazz to MG4 and I know for sure her decision was based more on the cars looks and electronic trinkets rather than its ability to replace her Jazz. A YouTube influencer provided the killer sales pitch.

She likes the car a lot but being a worrier admits the thought of not having enough charge to complete a journey and being unable to find a charger might never go away. Her stress levels were not helped when owner of the excavator sales and service next door to us jokingly asked her to park it on the other side of our compound away from his stock. The brother in law then went in for the kill by saying it would be best left in the street well away from our masters wooden house. All those nasty Tube videos putting ideas into people heads.

An EV service industry is already developing outside of the main dealers which might be good news for those concerned about affordable support for ageing EV's. We need to see more tear-downs and feedback from those repairing these Chinese masterpieces.

Just for fun …

What factual arguments should I have to refute BYD means Buy You Die?

I suppose I could ask for supporting evidence? A link perhaps? Or autopsy reports of deaths due to buying?

Perhaps you have ideas Jakey boy?

Why are you so sensitive and making weak attempts at insults? I owned a BMW before my model 3 and these are just some of the names:

Bavarian Murder Weapons
Born Moderately Wealthy
Big Mexican Weiner
Black Mans Willy
Brought Me Worries
Beats My Wood
Borrows My Wallet
Bothers My Willy
Buffoon Made Waste
Bust My Wallet
Broke My Wallet
Brings Me Women
Bought My Wife
Breaks Most Wrenches

etc etc

Never bothered me at all because it's a great car. You make it sound like BYD isn't so great and you're having regrets.. lol

No, it’s just that one of us has a sense of humor, and it’s not you!

This discussion should be closed as it has simply turned into yet another EV and China bashing fest.

The OP won’t get any more help with their request for feedback from owners of Chinese EVs as the majority of posters are simply here to troll

Because the actual owners of Chinese ev think they are good quality and are better priced and often better spec’d than European/yank ev.

They also seem to be readily available in Thailand.

"Toddle off"?  Playground comments are not technical points 😅

An electric scooter is an EV .... and the number of wheels on a vehicle is not a critical issue for battery degradation.

Many electric scooters and motorcycles have exactly the same battery technology as electric cars.  Mine is Lithium and it's battery has degraded to the point where I need to charge after every trip.

So my personal experience means I will not buy an electric car until battery tech changes.  Mobile phones have the same issue, but there's no alternative tech yet.

You may have accepted the risk .... good for you .... but don't make excuses for your higher risk apetite - live with it.

You are right, by now we can all agree that the EV hype is over and it is 👎 not a good idea to buy a Chinese EV.

I knew you would do well at the EOW university, good student.

For tomorrow's spelling test you need to pratice the word: humor.

I'm curious, what scooter do you actually have ?

Any specs, cost, battery chemistry would be interesting know.

Have I DECO (SUSU model), ride it most days, weather permitting, and charge it once every 4-7 days, when it's knocking on 2 bars (idiot meter).  Owned 2.5 yrs, and haven't really noticed any degradation at all.  Not LFP chemistry, so I don't top it up like I do the car.

In your OP, you state, 'overnight charge use to give 30km range', which sounds very low spec, or crap charger.   My small charger that came with the scooter, takes it from 20ish % to 100% in about 2+ hrs.

Same with my ebike batteries, and only take about 2+hrs to charge about the SOC.

I think closure of this thread should be left to the op who hasn't been online for 20 hours if any member can request closure of a thread because they don't like the content

no one can predict if the op requires further information on Durability of Chinese EVs or does the op want to modify the title to include all EV since we know Chinese EV's have only been in Thailand since 2019 no very long when you compare 5 years with 20 years of the current Toyota model that his relative is driving

would you agree that the closure of this thread without the op's approval would be acceptable

I've owned a BYD Atto 3 since late Oct 2023/almost 9,000Km ago.  Build quality is very good....I haven't had any problems (knock on wood...my head)....the Atto is smooth, quiet, and extremely fuel efficient vehicle--just a nice ride.  It's now my primary vehicle but my 2009 Toyota Fortuner 3.0L diesel that I bought new I'm keeping as my secondary vehicle since it still looks & runs great and seems like a family member...plus, the wife and I just like having two vehicles....but the Fortuner now only gets driven once or twice a month for a few kilometers to circulate the fluids and charge the battery.

This is my first EV.   Up until mid 2023 I was hesitant/leery of EVs mostly because I really hadn't researched them (i.e., hadn't studied-up on them, some fear of the unknown, etc).   But I researched, googled, watched  many, many Youtube videos (including the ones openly and deceptively hate on EVs), went to EV dealerships to look at/test drive EVs and I was won over.  I seriously doubt I will even buy another combustion vehicle (ie., ICEV).

So as you do more research rest assured you will fine a lot of good and bad info on the internet/social media regarding EVs....and in some cases the info provided is simply incorrect, dated, biased.  And there are also groups/lobbyists/individuals who intentionally propagate incorrect/misleading info regarding EVs--and yea, there are also some who will try to make EVs sound perfect which EVs are not....you'll just have to do your best to filter out such info.

Keep in mind that EVs are not for everyone especially for someone who cannot charge at home as going to a charging station once or twice a week can get old...takes time.   But if having a home wall charger which are often provided & installed free by the EV dealership then keeping the EV charged is as easy as keeping your smartphone charged.

In closing, there has been real cut-throat price cutting happening in Thailand over the last few months for EVs "and ICEVs"....that is, electric and combustion vehicles as an overall slump in vehicles sales (ICEV & EV) is happening right now....how long the slump and price cutting will last is anyone's guess....but it will end....maybe a few months from now....or maybe ????  The following two Thai websites are good sites to keep abreast of the price cuts and new models coming out.   Good luck.

It’s nonsense to say that it has adverse health effects, except in very high, signal strength, like standing in front of a microwave transmitter.

Yes , some EMF at home but not high voltage , high current switching like in an EV , very close to your body.

Thank you PiB that is the type of information I am fishing for, but I would like more.

Additional information, my grand niece is totally ignorant of mechanicals and has been conned twice. The first time, the charge warning light came on and I looked and saw that the fan belt was missing, so I sent her to have it replaced. The garage said no, you need a new alternator, so she forked out almost ฿10,000 for a new alternator. The second time , the brake warning light came on and I spotted  that the brake fluid level was low. While I was away looking for brake fluid, she took the car to a garage which replaced all the discs and pads but not the fluid. I replaced the fluid for her, it was filthy and had obviously been in the system since the car was new. She has learned to trust me more than dealers and garages, hence the reason I an looking for information on a subject that I,as yet, know very little about.

Please keep relevant comments coming.
