I understand your sentiments, Charlie, but I also feel that these traits can be a hindrance to Thailand becoming a fully developed country.

They're generally very tolerant of inappropriate (and even rude) behavior on the part of foreigners.

 

 

The culture is great in almost all respects (there are some down side of course but they dont come to mind at this time)

I like the pleasant exterior of Thai culture.

 

But what's inside isn't so 'sabai sabai'.....Best avoided

The local culture that exists everywhere, even in the different sections of Bangkok, is just like how I grew up in small town rural America in the 50s and 60s. Small family owned businesses everywhere, not taken over, and driven out, by major corporations yet. The community takes care of everyone else in the community. There was one dominant religion. This is just like where I grew up, and understand how it all operates at the local level. I won't go into detail in this thread. This is home.

Natural friendliness.

Cool yen yen mellow mellow (more noticeable outside of tourist areas)

 

 

They seem to mostly having no problem with sex on a first date.

Only in a few situations and because they are scared of consequences.

yep, seen it happen many times.

 

beneath their thin veneer of friendliness lies a vindictive, envious, bitter and resentful individual that will murder you for the most trivial of reasons.

When we argue, we are here now, not yesterday or the year before, and we make up and start a new day. In fact we rarely figthing or arguing about anything anymore, we have both adjusted ourself to fit each other and create less tention.

You have to have some idea of how to behave to get the best experience if staying in Thailand long-term.  Obviously, the tourists who say "Thai people are the friendliest, kindest, most relaxed people", have only had a very superficial and shallow experience.  They don't see the downsides to the very relaxed "mai bpen rai" attitude (vice, crime, abuse, corruption).  They're also in holiday mode, with plenty of money and staying in hotels, so aren't really exposed to many of the day-to-day challenges.

 

Generally, I like the way that most Thais get on with each other.  They're pretty trusting and trustworthy.  They like to relax and have fun.  I like the sense of humour.  They're very often polite and considerate in many ways.  They don't make too much noise (outside of cars, motorbikes and karaoke).  Riding the BTS is fairly peaceful.  I find they can be a little shy/sweet/awkward, which is quite nice.

 

Buddhism is one of the better "religions", with it's teachings on lack of attachment.  The respecting older people and caring for parents is nice to see.  Most Western kids wouldn't be caught dead hanging out with their parents and grandparents at the weekend.

 

Nice temples.  Lots of joy to be found.

 

There's plenty to like.

What I like is there's nothing called bob  

Luktung, lukrung, morlam, kantrum, ramwong, that's about all.

 

 

Is there a Thai culture, other than xenophobia, dogma, subservience and superstition?

Their overall relaxed and laid-back attitude. You don't often see Thais run around like headless chickens.

I like the nod rather than waving. It's so easy to miss-time a wave and end up blanking someone or having your wave go unnoticed. With a nod, you're just looking, then you nod, and it's done.

"Som Nam Na" 🤔 a great word that happens. 

 

,People who show zero curiosity about it, seem to not like Thai Culture, based on nothing,

 

People like me and Proton who get into it find a lot to like. Easily.
