They've been talking about making it family friendly for at least 20 years.

It will never happen, there are plenty of other family friendly places in Thailand.

Well, at least this time they're not trying to say that the sex trade doesn't exist. But common, Pattaya will never be known as anything more than a place for sex.

 

At least twice a year I see an article like this and it always makes me laugh.

Apart from a fly in/fly out day-trip for a cremation, my last stay in Pattaya was 2000. Went with friends and we did not go to the beach, nor did we visit any temples.

Was the cremation performed at the home of the deceased and not a temple crematorium?

You live here long enough, you know there is a big difference between what they say and what they do.  And then you realize the only thing they care about is money.  The fact that so many poor women here work in pattaya in that industry is of no concern to them until it affects the country’s “image”.  You can’t just rebrand pattaya as family friendly after decades of smut.

“Pattaya has the potential to become a city of various attractions and a hub for investment as well as world-class events.”

The city offers diverse attractions such as beaches, high-standard golf courses, cultural sites, meeting facilities, and shopping malls. Its proximity to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport and U-Tapao Airport in Chon Buri, along with nearby provinces like Rayong and Bang Saen, further enhances its appeal by helping to absorb the tourist inflow.

Last month, locals and operators in Pattaya protested against the Thai media’s portrayal of their city as a “Sin City.”

 

Sex tourism

 

Thanet noted that only those who have not visited Pattaya in over two decades still hold an outdated perception of nightlife and sex tourism. Frequent visitors and foreign travel agents recognize the city’s broader range of tourism offerings.

 

Morrakot Kuldilok, President of the Eastern Chapter of the Thai Hotels Association and an executive of the federation, acknowledged that prostitution still exists. She suggested that local government officials should regulate the industry and provide welfare measures to protect sex workers.

 

Given recent reports of illegal gambling near Pattaya Soi 6, Morrakot proposed establishing a legal casino operation to address the issue in Pattaya and other areas with similar activities.

 

The ACTF also suggested that Pattaya could become Thailand’s first casino city as part of their proposal. Other areas requiring improvement include safety, cleanliness, public infrastructure, sustainability, and city zoning regulations, which need government support.

Thanet pointed out that Pattaya’s zoning regulations have not been properly updated, leading to nightlife venues being mixed with hotels and residences. This mix can make some family tourists feel unsafe, reported Bangkok Post.

 

For the upcoming high season, Thanet estimated that tourism revenue in Pattaya should recover to over 80% of the 2019 level. However, challenges remain due to Thai tourists flocking to overseas destinations and rising competition from places like Vietnam and Hainan Island in China.

Pattaya has grown and been developed as the sex tourist capital of Thailand, if not South East Asia.  There are always going to be places like this and the demand remains high.  Better to embrace it for what it is.  That way it is easier to promote other parts of Thailand as family destinations.  There isn't a carpet big enough in the whole world to sweep it under but it can be orchestrated better.

 

Legalise the prostitution and issue work permits for the girls over 18.  Put in proper medical centres for the workers.  Don't try to tax them as that will just encourage them to go off grid. Of course none of this will ever happen as the whole industry is rotten to the core.  There are too many iron fists controlling the industry using threats and intimidation.

If there is any place I would recommend that you won't travel with children. It's Pattaya.

Again? Heard of such a plan a felt hundred times already. It's an insult to any average brain capacity. But with short-term memories prevailing around there, they keep on dreaming of becoming something they can never be. BTW I never stay in Pattaya, nearby Jomtien and better even Sattahip offer everything I need. There is no market for a TAT Pattaya. Anyway, they all know, they just pretend.

Family-friendly.  In "family-friendly" cities you should be able to walk on the sidewalks. I know that in Chiang Mai you are pretty much forced to walk in the street with the vehicle traffic due to the trees, signs, pots, utility poles, and other utility equipment being planted right in the middle of the sidewalks forcing pedestrians into the streets.  Who want their kids walking in the streets?  It's dangerous.  Just saying......

So - how are the sidewalks in Pattaya?  I haven't been there since 2007.  Do they have "family-friendly" sidewalks now?  Any entertainment for kids like arcades and kid-centered theme parks?
What's the chances of Dad and Mum getting assaulted by a taxi driver for calling a Grab or Dad getting assaulted by an aggressive tranny?  And let's not even talk about Jetskis.  Just wondering......
