In a bold move to raise awareness and reduce road accidents during the Songkran festival, Thailand's Department of Probation under the Ministry of Justice has launched the campaign "Drink and Drive, Visit the Morgue, Be Responsible to Society."

 

On 10th April, Pol. Lt. Col. Suriya Singhakamol, Director General of the Department of Probation, appointed Nopadol Nomraks, an Inspector with the department, to inaugurate the campaign at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok.

 

This initiative, spearheaded by the Bangkok Probation Office 1 and its Director, Nontachit Netpukkan, aims to instil a sense of responsibility and raise awareness about the consequences of drunk driving—a significant cause of road accidents during the festive period.

 

Over 100 participants, including probation officials, partner representatives, volunteers, and individuals currently under probation, attended the campaign's launch.

 

 

 

The initiative is part of a broader road safety effort themed "Safe Driving, Accident-Free Thailand," working towards sustainable accident prevention and reduction.

 

The Department of Probation is committed to advancing preventive justice and promoting social responsibility. This campaign is a part of the Ministry of Justice's road safety policy, designed to minimise loss of life and property among the public in the long term.

From my experience of Thais' reaction to blood, violence, death etc, it would have zero effect on their behaviour.

In fact, I feel many might even enjoy the experience.

It’s a cop out…. Laziness, just an announcement, media lip service !! 
 

The only solution for DUI is to arrest them all, in the cells until arraignment - charges & bail applied.

 

Unfortunately, they would keep the courts too busy… so the path of least resistance is taken & that is to do very little unless an accident is caused…

Problem is also people such as yourself boast about getting your own friends off these charges by putting pressure on your police friends.

Should be both:

 

- taken into a room at a jail where no beds and not enough floor space for everybody to lie down. And no bathing privacy.

- look at 10 dead bodies, each one for 5 minutes, all killed in traffic accident and perhaps 6 or 7 marked to indicate killed by a drunk driver now in jail for 10 years. 

Why only drunk drivers? Should take kids also, and take them around the ICCU in the hospitals I was in there last year and they would be bringing people in during the night, most lying there waiting to die,

Police stop - wanted driver to blow into the ‘wand’ which recognises the presence of alcohol but not the level.

 

If presence of alcohol on the breath is identified the BiB want a bribe - or the driver waits (however long - >1 hour) & is taken to the station for a proper breathalyser measurement.

 

The ‘bribe’ is to avoid the song & dance.

The ‘phone call’ is to avoid the game.

 

This has happened twice - both drivers no longer drink at all when they drive.

 

 

So - for BJ71 - wanna know who I am ?

Malcy is right to a point - it’s a little hypocritical of me to judge drunk drivers so harshly when decades ago I have assisted a couple of friends who thought they may be close to the legal limit. 
 

But, as regular drunk-driver, his attempt to point score & claim the moral high ground is pathetic & nothing more than an unintelligent attempt to point score… 

 

This is someone who admits to getting drunk (10-12 beers) & driving regularly (weekly)…  The self-righteousness is pathetic, it belies an underlying carelessness & nastiness when he knowingly drives & can kill someone while drunk driving….  A show of his true character. 
 

He hates & criticises the actions of foreigners who behave poorly in Thailand, yet does exactly ‘just that’ when DUI without any regards for the safety of those around him - he’ll say that he drives slowly & carefully when drunk to remain safe - hypocritical clown.

Yes I commented on one of his posts about the hypocrisy of his comments claiming he can drive safely after heavy drinking by going slow. Famous last words of a drunk driver

Apparently they tried this in California and drunk driving dropped by around 80%. Will it work in Thailand? That is anyone's guess.

That not true.

i have regards for others which is why I am a big advocate for driving safely and carefully after having a few. 
And as a result I have probably driven after having a few, as do 75% of expats in Thailand do, at least 600 times in my life without any incident.

The problem with some drink drivers is they go a bit silly and drive less safely after having a few, which I strongly oppose.

The same rules apply to drink driving as drug driving, drive safely and take a lot of care. 
 

I don’t really know where the law stands in Thailand as regards to driving after having 10-15 bongs? 
I don’t believe they test for it? Is it illegal? What is the limit? 
 

Some people should never do it, some people are more than capable and will never have an incident.

People who drink then get into a vehicle to drive are a menace to the rest of society. Everyone who has done that believe they are capable of driving a vehicle whilst the number of road deaths by drunk drives says the opposite.
