A British tourist in Phuket narrowly avoided disaster after his motorbike careened into a canal near Patong Hospital. Thanks to the prompt actions of local rescue workers, the 21-year-old was saved, escaping with only minor injuries.

The incident took place on June 10 along Sai Nam Yen Road. Emergency responders from the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation's Patong unit quickly rushed to the site upon receiving an emergency call. There, they found the young tourist trapped in the canal, having lost control of his motorbike.

The motorbike, still fitted with red licence plates indicating its recent registration, had plunged into the water, necessitating an urgent rescue. A spokesperson from Kusoldharm Phuket explained, "Rescue workers quickly secured the motorbike with a sling and pulled both the bike and the rider out of the canal."

Fortunately, the tourist sustained only minor injuries, none life-threatening, thanks to the swift rescue operation. While the precise cause of the accident is yet to be fully determined, speculation suggests the tourist may have missed a nearby bridge while navigating the road, inadvertently driving into the canal.

Witnesses suggested, "It’s possible that the tourist lost control of his bike and veered into the water." This incident underscores the hazards of driving on unfamiliar roads, particularly in regions where canals run adjacent to roadways.

The tourist's near miss was transformed into a fortunate escape by the quick-thinking Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation rescue team, highlighting the importance of road safety and awareness. As a reminder, practising careful driving, especially in new environments, is crucial. The outcome of this incident stands as a testament to the critical role of emergency services in protecting both locals and tourists alike.

.... more possible that he had never ridden before and had no idea what he was doing...

Likely unlicensed and rented illegally -  that crack-down they announced a few months back didn't last, as if it was ever expected it would !!!...

This will now cost him - the bike is waterlogged...   how much is a brand new Honda Click these days ?

Sounds like saving the rider was an afterthought.  After they saved the valuable stuff.

Lots of tourists doing dumb things on motorbikes these days.

Avoid them on Thai roads, these guys are dangerous.

Maybe some guard rails or something for these canals and 1-2 metre gutters would help too?

Eg. Patong hill has been probably the most notorious and reported  patch of road on the island for decades but parts of it on the patong side still have a 1 metre deep ditch centimetres away from the road.

If that is the guy,he looks like one of those new Brit chappies.

I've never understood why every tourist decides that Thailand should be their kindergarten for motorcycle/scooter riding...smh

Surely the ditch is visible at the side of the road, that being so, it should be avoidable.

Staying on the road is a very good idea if you don't want to end up in the ditch.

Just saying 🤦
