Leader of Bhumjai Thai Party Anutin Charnvirakul leaves the Parliament after lawmakers voted to select him as a new prime minister in Bangkok, Thailand, Friday, Sept. 5, 2025, (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit)

Thailand witnessed a political whirlwind as Anutin Charnvirakul took the helm as Thailand’s 32nd Prime Minister, with moves to establish his inaugural cabinet already underway. Various party members with strategic appointments make up the coalition government, which has the support of a minority of 146 representatives. Anutin becomes Prime Minister and holds the powerful position of Minister of Interior.

Rumours have circulated that Anutin's stronghold over the Ministry of Interior remains unshakeable. Interestingly, despite his brief departure, he didn't perform the customary farewell to the ministry's sacred symbol, hinting at his anticipated return. Joining him, Ms. Sabida Thaiseth acquires the role of Deputy Minister of Interior.

New appointments are the talk of the town, with Mr. Chaichanok Chidchob stepping up as the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. The Digital Economy and Society Ministry now sees Ms. Supamas Issaraphakdee as its new head, while Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn takes charge of the Transport Ministry. A fresh face accompanies him, Mr. Paradon Prisananunthakun, as Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office.

Outside the party, five cabinet seats stir speculation as well-known figures are proposed. Mr. Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput, former Bank of Thailand Governor, is in line for Finance Minister. Mr. Supattanapong Punmeechaow looks set to handle the Energy Ministry, and Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, former Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs, may head the Foreign Ministry. The Commerce Ministry maintains Mr. Chatuparn Burusphat, while the Justice Ministry awaits confirmation.

The Kla Tham Party has eight crucial roles, with Captain Thammanat Prompao pushing for the Defence Ministry amid competing interests from the Palang Pracharath Party. Mr. Atthakorn Sirilattayakorn, Ms. Narumon Pinyosinwat, and Mr. Akkara Prompao are positioned for the Agriculture, Education, Social Development and Human Security Ministries, respectively. Notable contenders for deputy roles include Mr. Ongart Wongprayu and Mr. Sumpan Mayuso.

Within Palang Pracharath's four allocated positions, Mr. Santi Prompat emerges as Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister. Meanwhile, General Nat Intharacharoen and General Prawit Wongsuwan are vying for the coveted Defence slot. Additional names such as Ms. Treenuch Thienthong and Mr. Chaiwut Thanakmanusorn are still being deliberated for their ministerial assignments, reported Siam Rath.

Lastly, Mr. Suchart Chomklin’s faction secures the role of Minister of Natural Resources and Environment and a potential spot in the Industry Ministry, likely to be filled by Master Sergeant Major Yos Sing Leamlert.

This cabinet selection sees a strategic distribution of power across insightful appointments, with implications for Thailand's domestic and foreign policies poised to develop under Anutin’s leadership in the upcoming era.

Another unelected government. Politics in Thailand is insane. Let's hope it is only four months followed by fresh free and fair elections where the winner can actually form a legitimate government and not be corruptly banned by the military-establishment's judicial arms namely the EC and the CC.

unfortunately this is true ...

let’s not forget, over the past 20 years we had this situation several times, and every time teflon toni (and his family) was the trigger ...

thanks to him, thailand also lost a few years under military rule ... the whole story is repeating itself again ... and i do not think it will be the end ...

A reasonable number of well known names listed above, unfortunately "well know" for the "wrong" reasons if you believe in morality, honesty, justice and "correct" Buddhism (ie the Buddha's original teachings, not distortions promoted these days (think Christian and Trump)).

Yes, of course, having scrambled on hands and knees to the top of the midden, they are going to step aside!

Four months isn't even long enough to fill up the troughs!

It was just about possible, albeit with some considerable parliamentary mental gymnastics, to justify Pheu Thai forming a government; at least they came second in the (now utterly irrelevant) general election.

But this bunch...

When/if there is eventually another election  (probably not until this parliamentary term comes to an end) and then some ("caretaker status") the whole wash and rinse cycle of manipulation will begin again.

I used (naively) to get excited about the prospect of democratically elected government in Thailand, even under the variety of sometimes unsavoury characters which Pheu Thai put forward; but now, whilst still wishing that democracy will prevail, I cynically expect that the grip of the "political elite" will remain.

In its own way as totalitarian as North Korea, albeit much more benign, a thirst for and grip on power driven by corruption and manipulation rather than brutality and repression. I suppose the saving grace is that it is unlikely that the same personality cult will emerge around this new "leader", I mean, born at sunrise on top of a sacred mountain in Buriram, adored by the masses, hysterical women throwing themselves overcome with adoration at his feet...

On the right lines......didn't Chalerm's son, who murdered a policeman during a robbery, eventually secure a very high rank in the RTP?...This is Thailand after all.

Just in case anyone in the government is reading this topic, I think Anutin is the greatest. Terrific man of courage, intelligence, and unsurpassed insight. Slated to be one of the leading international statesmen of our time.

IMO utter rubbish!

He has only got 4 months to make a name for himself before the Dissolution of Parliament as agreed (Written) with the Peoples Party!

Isn't it nice that someone believes politicians don't lie.

Former deputy junta leader Gen Prawit is slated to become new Defence Minister, the post he occupied after 2014 coup - but this time via the indirect support of People's Party which voted for Anutin. What a repulsive irony. #Thailand #PeoplesParty
