The Metropolitan Traffic Police in Thailand has announced a crackdown on corrupt practices within its ranks. In a move aiming to maintain order and integrity, officers found guilty of misconduct will face immediate suspension. Severe disciplinary action will follow any proven corruption, officials confirmed.

On 29 September, Police Major General Damrongsak Sawang-ngam led a pivotal meeting at the Saengsingkaew Room, Traffic Police Headquarters. Attended by Deputy Commanders and Inspectors overseeing key traffic divisions, the session focused on enhancing operational transparency.

These leaders, alongside the chiefs of various traffic control points, united to stress the importance of lawful and transparent conduct among officers.

The core objective of the meeting was to ensure officers adhere strictly to regulations, particularly concerning traffic discipline and alcohol checks. Emphasising a commitment to transparency, the initiative seeks to reinforce the National Police's adherence to regulations. Superiors are mandated to oversee and regularly visit checkpoints to ensure compliance.

Should media reports or complaints highlight misconduct or suggest corruption, involved officers will be suspended immediately. A swift investigation will ensue, driven by a committee dedicated to uncovering the truth. Should any officer be found guilty, severe disciplinary measures will be enacted. In addition, leadership at all levels will be evaluated based on their adherence to these standards, ensuring comprehensive oversight.

Looking ahead, this initiative is expected to build public trust in traffic regulation enforcement and deter potential corruption. The scrutiny of traffic officials and checkpoints serves as a benchmark for maintaining order and transparency at every operational level within the force.

The meeting and its resolutions mark a significant step in promoting accountability and integrity among law enforcement personnel in Thailand.

  • From tomorrows headlines.....   After suspensions remaining 5  traffic cops are wondering how to cover all of Thailand.

  • In fairness to the cops, that's baked into the sauce.  Between a ridiculously low salary and requiring them to pay for their own equipment, they pretty much have to supplement their income with graft

  • Go easy - there will not be any cops left  😮

We hear this every time a cop is caught and exposed in the media for taking bribes or shaking a tourist down yet nothing ever changes.

The country runs on bribes and always will while the average daily wage is so horribly low.

It's sort of understandable.

Do they are going to hire a total new policeforce, as from high to low they are all corrupt.. examples enough as the Thaksin saga, the red bull heir, the cops who don't write tickets, if they work and many more.....a total new policeforce that is not corrupt, a Thai dream that will never come true

In fairness to the cops, that's baked into the sauce.  Between a ridiculously low salary and requiring them to pay for their own equipment, they pretty much have to supplement their income with graft and corruption, just to support their families.

If you look at it with a cynical eye, they're generally shaking down people who are caught doing something wrong and people who need specific services from the police.  In that respect, those are the people paying the vast majority of the graft, so ordinary taxpayers who never interact with the police are paying lower taxes.

I don't agree with the system, but there is some logic behind it.

Is it good news ?

Better pay a lower bribe than the whole fine at the station.

Yeah agree. Just to add the mia noi culture among government officials including cops which require cash money (in case the wife has access to bank account) necessitates this practice.

This is'nt the first time this has happened

So only Traffic Police, what about all the other branches, like Immigration etc. The ones I reported are still ripping Many people off daily.

Better focus on the guys in the high positions instead of molesting the poor cops for making a few baht extra.

Sometimes it sounds like this when you call the station and ask for help.

😅😂🤣😆

It's good to see that comedy isn't dead 🤡

The headline and first paragraph are misleading, it is clarified further down.

Officers SUSPECTED of misconduct will be suspended, then investigated. If found guilty, they will be disciplined or prosecuted.

This follows practice in other jurisdictions. What appears to have changed is suspension during investigation rather than transfer to an inactive post.

Reading between the lines.... disciplinary action will be taken only if caught publically caught being corrupt, we all know corruption starts from the bottom to the top, few cops would be clean.

There goes a very, very, very big chunk of the BIB. Ask any Thai if thet think the BIB are corrupt and you'll only get one answer. YES!
