Lino Neil, a British teenager, could spend years in a Qatari prison following his arrest for allegedly smuggling cannabis into the country. Neil, 18, was detained at Hamad International Airport on November 21 during a layover on his return journey from Thailand to Scotland. The young man, who works in the fishing industry, asserts that criminals coerced him into carrying the package.

Lino's family is contending with significant legal expenses—allegedly up to 1,731,000 Thai Baht (approximately £40,000)—to support his defence in Doha. They have already raised 108,300 Thai Baht (approximately £2,500) for legal representation. Nicola, Lino's mother, argues that her son, from Drymen, Scotland, was a victim of manipulation, expressing hope that Qatari authorities will recognise that he was forced into this predicament.

Neil’s mother shared her distress, highlighting that Lino had been under the control of a British man and was in fear for his safety and that of his family. Nicola claims that they threatened to harm her son if he did not comply with their demands. Lino, who had turned 18 just a month prior, reportedly experienced harsh conditions in detention, losing weight due to inadequate food provisions and expressing despair during conversations with his family.

Robbie, Lino’s older brother, detailed their concerns about his brother's current situation. Initially detained with 80 others at the airport, Neil was recently moved to Doha's Central Prison. Robbie refutes the notion that Lino could have orchestrated a drug deal, describing him as more familiar with fishing than criminal activities, reinforcing their plea to bring him home safely.

Lino is set to appear in court on January 27, where he intends to argue his case of being coerced into smuggling the drugs. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office is reportedly providing support, maintaining communication with both his family and local Qatari authorities. His case highlights a growing trend of young Brits entangled in drug smuggling accusations abroad, facing severe consequences, reported the Daily Mail, UK.

Key Takeaways

  • Lino Neil faces years in a Qatari jail for alleged drug smuggling.

  • A criminal gang, according to his family, coerced him.

  • Lino’s court hearing is scheduled for January 27, as the legal battle unfolds.

This doesn't make sense. Making threats against him while physically in Thailand - sure - but as soon as he left Thailand how exactly would they get to him or his family? They'd have to 1. Find out wh

GB really should have a look at the education system. It looks like they don't educate but make them dumber. How many more youngster do you have to catch with drugs before it sinks in with them? Maybe they lack basic reading knowledge?

I don't know if he's lying or not, but presumably your opinion is based on some understanding of the case.

A lot depends on whether he is telling the truth about being forced by threats to his family and himself. If it is true then I'm not sure how education and basic reading knowledge would help.

If I were part of a criminal gang wanting someone to transport drugs, and if all the warnings about getting caught were making it difficult to find couriers, I think coercion using threats, including to family members would be my first option.

This doesn't make sense. Making threats against him while physically in Thailand - sure - but as soon as he left Thailand how exactly would they get to him or his family? They'd have to 1. Find out where he lives, 2. Find out who his family are to begin with, 3. Where they live, 4. After all that they would need boots on the ground in that locality. All of that to smuggle...cannabis? Nah, the more likely scenario is he was approached by someone with an offer, got convinced to do it (not threatened), and now that he's caught the backpedalling begins.

Of course you'd need to have some information about at least one family member. You wouldn't need anyone on the ground after that as the prospective courier wouldn't know anyway.

I thought that was so obvious that it didn't need explaining, but clearly I was wrong. A British man was mentioned as being involved.

I take your point but it is my belief that it is not to do with education but to do with a belief that there will be no consequences that concern them. And often there aren't if they are caught with a suitcase full of cannabis in a European country.

No one issues a credible threat against your life and then permits you to engage in low-level smuggling of cannabis.... that story is a pure fiction. If you're gonna lie when getting caught at least upgrade it to coke or heroin.

Personally, i find it all hard to believe but we don't have all the details.

I am more concerned that any parent would allow a 17 year old to travel to Thailand unaccompanied by a responsible parent.

Bulls**t !!

This is the story they are all coming out with now after one woman in UK basically got off after getting caught by saying she was threatened and her family would be in danger.

Unless they can provide evidence or names etc to catch the people who ' seemingly ' threatened them then charge them to full extent of law .

Another one " forced " to smuggle Cannabis from Thailand, strange how every one who is caught uses the same excuse, the rise in Cannabis smuggling from Thailand skyrocketed once it was legalised, and attracted criminal enterprises from around the globe, due to its cheap price in Thailand, it certainly attracted the " Quality Tourists " that TAT was hoping to entice to visit the country, but a serious question is, the weed shops that are selling these large multiple Kilo amounts of weed, and im presuming they also Vacuum pack them, must know its not for personnal use, so should they be implicated in the smuggling operation also? I hope he enjoys his extended visit to Qatar, might teach him a well earnt lesson, and as for his Go Fund me page to help with his legal bills, im sure the people he was forced to smuggle weed for, will be more than happy to help.....

All these stories seems to be about Brits. Do other nationalities not partake in the same game? And I do not recall reading many/any stories of Thailand arresting these people on departure, and yet surely their outgoing baggage checks must be able to see a suitcase full of weed? I don't blame Thailand in this respect, why should they have to put up with processing them, just send a note to their destination and let them deal with it I guess.

Looks like another good reason to stop the easy availability of cannabis, etc, in Thailand.

Yes, until more details about the 'gang' who coerced become available and any evidence to support they coerced him, its just his word. Is he playing for sympathy?

Do you think GB is getting closer to US education levels?

That would be bad!

He can always say that one word “No”

Qatar is a bad place to be detained, full stop.

Off topic, but a couple of years ago, while transiting in Doha en route from Thailand to UK, my hand carry was swabbed in a random check and set off the alarms ... apparently testing positive for RDX. Several successive swabs all set off the detector ... as did a further swab run through a different detector. By which time some not very friendly Qatari police were on scene. Thankfully a final swab didn't set off the detector and they let me go, much to my surprise. The flight was held 20 mins past departure for me, possibly because I was flying Business. I suspect if in back of the bus my baggage would already have been offloaded.

Do the crime do the time it seems to be the normal story when everyone is caught “ I was forced to do it “

The bit I am struggling with is if the destination was the UK, it just doesn't seem to be worth enough for anyone to be coercing anyone. I don't know what a suitcase full of ganja costs in the UK but I'm guessing it might be in the thousands or tens of thousands range. Enough for a young bloke who saw how dirt cheap and easy it was to buy in Thailand and could be a handy bit of pocket money if he could get some back home. I'm not buying the criminal gang story. I reckon a young bloke has rolled the dice, not thought ahead of the consequences, like young people do, or figured he would try to talk his way out of it if he did get nabbed.

All he had to do was tell his parents, they contact police, police contact embassy, he's then at check in at Bangkok airport taken to one side and detained, no one is any the wiser so no more threat as it looks like a genuine arrest, that's why I call bull<deleted> on the threat

Agreed, so why do smugglers do stop overs there?

Most of you all become Judge, Jury and Executioner and you haven't a clue what you are talking about.

What a bunch of bigoted morons.
