Russian with axe and no friends found floating off Trat just "wanted to get back to Pattaya"

TRAT: -- A Russian man found floating in an inflatable boat off the Trat coast told police he just wanted to get back to Pattaya.

He had lost his mates and his bicycle was bust so the only way was to row back to Pattaya.

Mysteriously he had an axe with him.

He had been floating for four days.

However, after an interpreter was found and there was a long chat police were understandably suspicious, and have arrested him.

Klong Yai police and foundation medics were alerted Sunday morning after Sao Phromrot, the Phu Yai Ban in Ban Jek Lak, saw an inflatable boat drifting off the coast.

They brought the boat to shore. Inside was a broken down old bicycle, a rice cooker, some clothes, an axe, two oars - and an incoherent Russian man.

An interpreter was summoned. Through Hatdaporn Silachai the unnamed boatman said that he had come with three other friends from Pattaya to Trat.

But he had "lost" his mates and he needed to get back.

His bicycle was broken and he just had the boat so he was getting back that way.

Sanook reported that after several hours of chat in which the Russian was vague and uncooperative the police detained him and took him to the police station.

He had no ID and said he had lost his passport.

They kept him and Sanook intimated they had called immigration though no more details were forthcoming.

Bit stange, wonder what the police think he has done!

Well the fact that he was uncooperative, could not produce any ID or Passport is enough to detain him for further investigation.

Pattaya is a big draw for some people.

A visit to a mental health doctor on the way to the station, wouldn't be a bad idea.

Likely stealing a boat for starters.

Unless he arrived in Trat from Pattaya on a larger one.................

Fact that he has no ID won't have helped his cause either.

stop teasing this poor man. he needs help. how would you feel in the same situation.?

It's illegal to carry a knife (Fine is 100 baht) and he has an AXE!

it's not an axe, it's a Russian oar hammer

Oar a murder weapon if they cannot find his missing mates?

Check the axe for blood stains, considering his three friends went "missing"...

Could have understood it if he was rowing AWAY from Pattaya with no friends, no passport  no ID, and no money by the sounds of it!

Russian... boat... axe. Maybe he was harking back to the viking days.

Tough and brave guy with good equipment and good mood. At night probably he came to beach, cooking some rice and going around on his bike. And the axe he used for cutting some branches for a shelter and to hunt some sharks. A tale? Who knows?

Lost his mates ? No pass port ? But went to Koh Chang on a bike apparently, and also just happened to have a boat and an axe with him ?

Good to see he was prepared for all eventuallity !!!
