Hightown----Crime drama--USA TV release 17 May

set on  Cape Cod, Jackie Quiñones, a hard-partying National Marine Fisheries Service agent, has her free-wheeling life thrown into disarray when she discovers a body on the beach - another casualty of Cape Cod's opioid epidemic. As a result of this trauma, Jackie takes the first steps toward becoming sober - until she becomes convinced that it's up to her to solve the murder.

Seemed to have promise at first glance but it seems a generic plot mainly distinguished by the prevalence of the usual PC inclusiveness tropes. It ain't another The Killing, suffice it to say. Each to his own, but I'll pass.

Trial by Media

New crime series by Netflix.
All 6 episodes are available.

Summary: Six televised cases defined by headlines reaching across different areas of the law including the unforgettable Jenny Jones made-for-Court TV murder trials, the sensational story of Rod Blagojevich’s political fall, and the case of Amadou Diallo, an unarmed African immigrant who was shot 41 times by police in New York City.

Thanks Will27. I always go with your judgement.

I see it out there in lots of places - apart from E04, any pointers?

I haven't watched any of it yet so I can't comment on the quality.

The whole series is available on RARBG.

I've just watched 'Darkest Hour'.

'May 1940. As the Nazis advance against Britain's European allies, newly elected prime minister Winston Churchill must decide whether to leave neighbouring countries to their fate, by striking a peace deal with Hitler, or fight on against terrifying odds for the greater good'. (courtesy BBC)

A brilliant film covering the first few months of WW2 and a revealing insight into the great leader's character. It's available for live stream only on the BBC for the next 27 days.

If you ever wondered how the famous 'we'll fight them on the beaches' speech came about, here's the answer.

Highly recommended.

Did it get released early..?? Thanks for the review BigStar---yer there are not to many crime series that make the mark.

The three series of 'Fargo' directed by the Coen brothers are excellent, and actually better than the original movie.  Especially the first series is outstanding with Billy Bob Thornton as the chilling deranged killer and Martin Freeman 'breaking bad' under his influence.

Yes there were 2 or 3 movies about this came out about same time last year, --that speech was aimed more at the French who were already talking about surrender (& did a 6 days latter) Brittan's fear was that they would not only surrender but join with Germany.....which to a certain extent they did, forming the Vichy government and allow the access of German warships refueling in all its colonies---Churchill was saying no matter what you do we will continue to fight.......on the beaches ..in the valleys .... etc

Anyway ----Movie thread---I better not go off topic...............................:coffee1:

.

Why does the french navy have glass bottom boats...............So they can see their Air force.

Yes --agree I just wish we didn't have to wait so long for each one, most everything the Coen Brothers have done has been great...if you can get back to earlier ones "The Man Who Wasn't There|......shot in Black & white.....& "Blood simple"...really great stuff.

TV Bosch is good --I made the mistake of reading most of the books first.

Capone

The reviews aren't great, but I'll watch just about anything with Tom Hardy in it.

Available on RARBG.

Summary: Once a ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Alfonse Capone was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore.
At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Alfonse's mind and his past becomes present.

Harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life. As he spends his final year surrounded by family with the FBI lying in wait, this ailing patriarch struggles to place the memory of the location of millions of dollars he hid away on his property.

Thanks for reminding me about "The Man Who Wasn't There", downloaded for another watch. No idea why but it suddenly reminded me of another movie from 1991, "Paris Trout" with Dennis Hopper, which I'm downloading at the moment. Interested to see how it stands up after 30 years. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102638/

Edit: Paris Trout may be a bit of a slow download from PB.

True. If you haven't seen any of these, you might take a look:

Unforgotten (1st season)
The Night Of
The Fall
Line of Duty (waiting for the next season!)
Gracepoint
Damages
Bron Broen

Then there's The Wire, technically a crime series but it's so good that it seems much more than that, a world in itself. I didn't think I'd like it at first, but after a couple of episodes I never looked back.

Due to lockdown I’ve finally started to watch some of the stuff I downloaded.

Preacher season 4  - Excellent stuff, really off the wall though, you have to watch from season 1 to appreciate.

Where else are you going to get Hitler, a vampire, a preacher with god like powers, Grim Reaper as a western gun shooter,  God, Jesus, retarded son of Jesus, various characters sent down to hell and back and a love triangle all in one show !!

Reprisal - couldn’t get into this at all, didn’t seem like it was going anywhere and deleted.

The Righteous Gemstones - absolutely loved this ( but anything with Danny McBride and Walton Goggins in is great- bring back Vice Principals ), some great characters and great dark humour. An excellent cast.

Westworld season 3 - I gave up on Westworld half way through season 1 as it seemed to be dragging, gave it another try on season 3.......nope, sorry, too much talking not enough action for me !!

Save me ( U.K. ) season 2 - vaguely remember season 1 being good so downloaded season 2. During the “ previously on Save Me “ part I couldn’t remember any of it so will dl season 1 again.

Does look good though !

I enjoyed that too. Like you say, great dark humour, plus I like John Goodman.

As Big Star recommended, Damages is excellent, with Glenn Close as a manipulative lawyer.

Medical drama I have watched a few episode of: Transplant,  Canadian production,  looks like a month old now.  Excuse if already posted.

If you're using a PC, then at the top of the page is white box: "search imdb". Enter the film in there.

edit: My Android app has exactly the same feature.

There are some great shots of London, now they have those drones shooting film from above......good entertainment for lockdown anyway.

now then there is a movie on Youtube that is very interesting.

It is quite controversial, produced by Michael Moore and directed by Jeff Gibbs.

Name of the movie is "Planet of the Humans".

You will get another view of for example Solar panels, Wind Power and many other things.

Here is a link to the movie in Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk11vI-7czE&feature=share&fbclid=IwAR3iZoQQNe8LL22HsH-do603FJUlZp8r_bJ43E5jmNlCQT7ET9ZLR8rabe8

After you have seen this movie then you might be interested to see "Michael Moore, filmmakers respond to criticism of new bombshell environmental film "

That one is also on Youtube and the link is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bop8x24G_o0

Agreed, it had very little to do with Capone, could have just been a portrayal of dementia in a nursing home.
