Mae Hong Son: Foreigners ordered to stay away - night curfew until April 15th

Mae Hong Son: Foreigners ordered to stay away - night curfew until April 15th

2pm.jpg

The governor of Mae Hong Son in Thailand's far north west has banned foreigners from entering the province for two weeks and imposed a strict curfew on people leaving their houses or place of residence from 10 pm to 4 am.

The penalty for defying the order is prison or a heavy fine.

Suwapong Kittiphatphiboon stated the regulations in a letter yesterday. The rules will run from April 1st to April 15th.

No one is allowed to enter or leave the province during the night curfew except for medical emergencies, postal services, medical supply deliveries and civil servants.

No non-Thais are allowed to enter the province at all. If they are already there and leave they can't come back.

All hotels, guest houses and homestays must check the health of visitors - if any foreigner is running a fever the Covid-19 authorities must be contacted immediately.

Returnees from Bangkok and surrounding provinces and other high risk areas must contact the local poo yai ban or kamnan and self quarantine for 14 days.

People who violate the order can be jailed for three years and/or fined 100,000 baht of jailed for 2 years and/or fined 40,000 baht under Article 38.

In my musings, I believe that this is the thin end of the wedge.  It may be just a matter of time before all none Thai citizens are expelled from the Kingdom.

So ban

foreigners from entering his little Kingdom but any Thais who may be contaminated are fine ! Taking his lead from that racist Health minister who knows nothing about health ! Deep engrained Racist bile coming from deep in the gut now !

They would never expel us . Far to forthright . They will just keep raising the bar and throwing more bureaucracy at us until even Richard Barrow gets the message and leaves.

This military government is xenophohic  and would prefer it if the only westerners here were those on a 2 week vacation staying at expensive hotels and dribbling large amounts of cash everywhere.  They have no eye for the future since they are in hock to China and think that the Chinese are more culturally akin to themselves.

The Chinese hordes will save them.

I admire your confidence, but frankly, I wouldn't put anything past these Muppets. Need;less to say, I am done with transferring any more money to this country, bar what I need to live and against all that I have said previously, I will use agents in the future to get me my extension, and sod the implications.

Stuhan... can you share the name of the place in South America (can PM me). I'm in the same boat, sick of the xenophobic rants, pollution and Govt. ass kissing the Chinese.

As i do already sod them I agree with you ,the way we are treated in this country is appalling.

What happens if the farang has a wife /partner/home there? Still refused entry??

Time for foreigners to avoid going out their front door in Thailand, if you do have to then wear your paper mask and make it brief.

You only have to watch the news on tv to see what is happening, no Thai language skills required , videos of Putin shaking hands with his doctor, Boris in isolation and the Queen shaking hands, the crowds going wild at a hockey game and McDonalds filled to capacity ( Russia I think ) without a mask in sight !!

Quite obvious where the blame is being laid for the Covid19, and it’s not here or China !!

I think I would rather have the virus than get 3 years jail in Thailand

I just can't understand why at this time the Thai's are so adamant on all this petty bureaucratic nonsense when they could just do a blanket amnesty for 30-90 days. They really want this fat stack of papers as if there's some dire consequences of them not knowing exactly where we are for the next month? For me personally, lots of respect is being lost on these people in the last few weeks.

and the Queen shaking hands

The queen has been in isolation for over a week now, last had contact with Charles and Boris 15 March , so doubt she is shaking hands with anyone

The report was about Putin shaking hands with his doctor, Boris and the Queen archived photos were also shown just to strengthen their case I think .

Make sure you cough over every bit of paper you hand them.

If you know someone with the virus, get them to cough on the paper too.

I think anywhere you move you'll find more and more people showing their true colours during this crisis, not only Thailand.

In NSW Australia's country towns the city residents are no longer welcome. They are met with makeshift road signs "Go away" and some are getting their tyres sliced. The same hostile people were begging them to come back and spend money only a month ago during the bushfire crisis. They received a lot of handouts and donations from the same people they are turning away now.

I'm currently stuck in India, Goa. Yesterday I moved to a different AirBnb accommodation which has wifi - I can't afford now not to have a backup internet connection. The new place is a private apartment in a resort, where some people also live permanently. What was supposed to be a simple check-in turned into a 3 hours Mexican stand-off with the residents. I managed to get in after 3 hours and maybe more than 50 phone calls with the Australian consulate, the Indian ministry of tourism, the police, the health centre and my landlady. The police came in and OKed me to come in, only to be fronted by a small demonstration of around 10 Indians telling me directly in my face "We don't want you here, go find another place".  Tons of extra phone calls and I eventually wore them down and they dispersed. If it was someone with thinner skin he would walk away frightened.  There are other reports of foreigners here getting beaten by the police with bamboo sticks because they went to the pharmacy to collect medicine.

There are good people too, and my Airbnb landlady who is in Mumbai is just outstanding. She spend a good part of the day yesterday helping me. I had only a couple of biscuits left and a litre of water, the food shops are closed and you are not allowed to wander around. There are some good places to order food online like Swiggy, but they take only Indian credit cards and no COD now - my whole stack of Oz credit cards is pretty much useless here. The only feasible way to pay here online is via Amazon Pay, but you can't top your wallet unless you have an Indian credit card again! My landlady purchased via her account some Amazon digital gift cards, with which I finally was able to load my wallet and pay for food. I'm transferring money back to her with Transferwise. Simple things made incredibly difficult for foreigners in India.

I've been living here for 18 years now and have been working at schools for 15 years.

I have to do my yearly visa extension and work permit the same way as I just arrived in this country.

The tone at the Immigration got nasty and loud, no thanks.

I've had savings, bought plenty of stuff that kept Thais in jobs, but now I can't see any more of this Farang Xenophobia that's going on here.

Not only the Thai colleagues seem to dislike foreigners more and more, but the ordinary folks are also getting more impolite by the hour.

It was all different 18 years ago, but I'd never settle down here again. I wish I'd known that before.

I do not see any reasons to continue living here and will do what I consider best shortly.

If these idiots believe that more and more foreigners will come as tourists, it's time to open their eyes.
