Chiang Mai: Thais hit hard as queue for free food goes round the moat

Sanook reported that these Covid-19 pandemic times were disastrous for many Thais and not least of all those living in Chiang Mai in the north of the country.

As evidence of the desperation of the jobless and people with no savings, they published pictures of a queue stretching two kilometers around the moat in the area of the Chinese consulate.

Hundreds of people had got in line for handouts of rice, dried goods, oil, eggs, water and ready made meals.

Monchai, 43, was the organizer of the charity after getting together with people on Facebook who helped garner donations.

This was the sixth day of handouts, he said, and it was costing 20,000 baht a day to keep the people fed.

More and more people were coming with each passing day, he said.

Free food being dished out all over the place, but why is it volunteers putting their time and money up, when the government who should be taking the lead are nowhere to be seen?

And a good opportunity to catch the virus from someone standing close (not social distancing) to them as well .

A good cause but social distancing should still have been adhered to.

Ridiculous.

The government cannot be responsible for everything, everyplace in the world.

Many western countries including the US, have food banks and charities with volunteers that rely on sources other then the government to fund them and help people in need of food.

Bezos gave 100 million and many others made big donations.

So, instead of complaining about the government, why don't you go down and help yourself by making a donation.

You think people care about this nonsense when they are starving,

The Government could care less.  I am still waiting on the caravan of vehicles with food at Government prices.  Went for my morning run and ran by BNH hospital, looked busy already at 8 am.  Construction zone down the street packed with workers and Silom jammed with people on the sidewalks and the Sala Daeng BTS very busy, something must have kicked loose because storefronts selling goods were still closed but the sidewalk in front was filled with whatever they sell inside and people were busy buying food and such.  I realize this is Friday morning, but all week long at the same time it has been very minimal with foot traffic.  Maybe they are stocking up for the weekend.  I asked my GF if she had heard anything on her Facebook pages, and she said the only thing she saw is more thefts at houses that even have security systems in place.

At these queues people are told about social distancing. If you see people in "clumps" they have normally come together. The problem now is the amount of people turning up, maybe an average queue time of 2hrs or so. At the start of these "handouts" not so many people but now more people becoming desperate. The big problem is how long the funding can go on, donations are from small businesses/people/business people of Chiang Mai. If this continues into next month can the donations keep coming?

Also setting up testing stations with the food distribution

Thai government should give out 5000 baht for those individuals over age 18.

Not sure that sub-mariners are cut out for that sort of work. How would their subs reach each major town and city across the country?

They could get to Chiang Mai via the Moats couldn't they,  wait that's not possible, maybe in one of the mini subs someone wanted to loan them for a cave rescue....nah...

Thanks for that. I am already contributing to two places that are dishing out free food. Are you doing anything at all to help?

Meanwhile, Chiang Mai's favorite politician is building a hi-tech supermarket in Dubai where you shop and never have to leave your car. You'd think he would want to be helping out his hometown, but actually if you really think about it, it's no surprise he's not.

No society is more than three meals away from revolution.

This could be the beginning of the end and democracy beckons.

Just the opposite in fact

Chair of CP calls for govt to aid ailing businesses.  Billionaire Dhanin Chearavanont has called on the government to help hard-hit businesses

I'd wonder if it was some falang has whispered quietly into a ruler makers ear?

 - the idea of having them queue around the Moat, is genius!

 - it provides a natural barrier against the ususl massive short cutting of a queue

well via the moat there I guess ????

Services are more than just submariners and they know logistics and food service ????

I'm sure you meant to say, "The government couldN'T care less."

unless you do mean they could actually care less, then i would be a little lost.  I could care less about COVID, but I like to care about humans.  That would make sense.

But I couldn't care less about a star 100000 light years away from Earth

I could care less about people hungry

But I couldn't care less about billionaires making billions off this mess

I think we will be seeing the armed forces on the streets soon enough.

Let them eat Tanks, or was that let them eat cake, so confused now....

Chiang Mai has a population that relied on income from tourism.

I can see this getting much worse, in a very short space of time.

Very sad to see.

At least people are donating to help feed the folks who are down on there luck in Chiang Mai.  I have donated as well to assist, but in the US there is just one millionaire politician who needs to boast about her daily routine and to me is the New Marie Antoinette.

‘LET THEM EAT ICE CREAM’: Multi-Millionaire Nanci Pelosi Shows Off Freezer Full Of Gourmet Ice Cream As Thousands Line Up At Food Banks.  $14 dollar pints she eats from specialty gourmet stores.

Just think if the top brass here did the same thing, which is kind of what has been done anyway with the meager handouts...
