Thai PM wants all tourists to wear wristbands - we're not opening the floodgates

Thailand's prime minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has stressed that the opening of Thailand's borders to foreign tourists is not a return to mass tourism but a controlled and limited experiment.

Everyone on the STV plan must agree to comply with the conditions set out by the Thai government.

That means all foreign tourists allowed in under the special tourist visa must wear GPS wristbands so that their movements can be closely tracked.

Prayut was speaking after a cabinet meeting confirmed arrangements.

The plan is just days away from starting with the first load of Chinese tourists set to arrive next week from Guangzhou. Others will follow from there and Scandinavia, as previously reported.

In a report from Thai Rath Prayuth was still saying that the views of Thai people were important in opening up the country at all.

But he suggested that people who didn't want the country opened were not those suffering in the decimated tourist industry.

He said that strict rules for foreign visitors must be observed including their tracking.

He also commented on the issue of airlines giving refunds for flight changes saying that the Thai authorities had asked the airlines to be sympathetic.

But ultimately it was up to each airline's policy whether they did or not.

Seriously, coming here for a holiday sounds like a humiliating test of endurance.

How would they know who the tourists who are supposed to wear bands are vs the expats who are already here ? I could make a band out of Chang poptops is that would help.

I wonder whether the Scandinavians that already booked their STV-trip, were aware of this cattle branding requirement for their Happy Holidays in the land of smiles.

He should get a new medal on his uniform for being among the dumbest people on the planet.

Europe people will not use GPS wristbands, thats a thing used to criminal persons.  I can also hardly believe they will accept the other requirements to STV visa.

No reason to send a flight to Scandinavia.

If Thailand want western tourists, they must show much more human respect and better behavior.

Every day, a new harebrained scheme.

They really are clueless!

The sarcastic little devil inside me is suggesting that headband trackers be placed on these policy makers. Then again with “tourism” policies like this there is no need to track a head that is hibernating in an anal cavity.

Seriously though, I read these policies and realize that as a tourist with autonomy that Thailand is simply not on the map of potential destinations for now.

Assuming that it applies to all foreigners and not just short term visitors, many foreign husbands and fathers of Thais will have to comply, also any retired persons that want to stay in LOS.

I'm not supporting the idea, but I'm surprised it hasn't been done in NZ given the number of people in isolation that escape and have close contact with members of the public.

They certainly didn't want to make it easy to stay long term before corona, but I'm sure they still want two week millionaires to arrive and depart after spending all the money.

The only thing missing is that the TM 6 number is tattooed on entry. Totally sick in the head.

Seriously having to wear a GPS wrist band? He needs a tattoo on his forehead that says "out to lunch". What an embarrassment for this country to have someone who rigged and eliminated everything in his way to be PM.

No doubt track and trace devices coming to expats and immigrants next... try it out with tourists first.

More nonsense. More arrogance from the incompetent.

Thailand needs courageous leadership. They don't have it. The army are major cowards. ANY person from ANY nation should be welcome starting tomorrow, if they are willing to subject themselves to a 14 day quarantine and pay excessive fees for that two week sentence. There is no downside or risk, and only upside for the nation. No groveling from a local consulate should be required. That is utter nonsense. A covid free letter and a booking at an approved hotel. Period. No more Inane "Phuket or Thailand models". And no special health insurance either. Quarantine is enough of a penalty already. Stop being silly and stop the nonsense.

And they should be begging foreigners who are already here, to stay. Foreigners who overstay their permission to remain in Thailand face fines and even possible jail. Huh? Really? You have got to be kidding. Wait a minute. Have you guys lost your senses? Have you forgotten your people, entirely?

For the more than a hundred thousand tourists that are estimated to still be here on tourism visas, I suggest free unlimited visas, 10,000 baht hotel vouchers, and vouchers for many free, gourmet meals. And an immigration officer will come to your hotel to renew your visa, to show our appreciation, of your continued support. Perhaps half price air tickets for domestic travel.

Princely treatment. Thank you so much for helping to rescue our economy and our people. We appreciate it, and aim to show it for a change! We are past the era of thugs like the big joke. And we apologize for all of his abuse.

Lucky i still not able to come any time soon . He's dreaming that normal tourists want to wear this if they ever allowed back in .

GPS is one-way so how can they track? SIM card aswell for calling the master? or do you have to upload the info everyday?

Ah, maybe only read out the watch when the carrier is determined positive.
