Tourism facing further suffering as fears of escalation in protests mount, industry leader

The chief of the Tourism Council of Thailand has said that the ongoing democracy protests against the government threaten to deal a further hammer blow to the country's tourism industry.

Chairat Trairatanajarasporn noted that the pandemic had already decimated foreign tourism.

Now the rapidly spreading protests threatened to do the same to what domestic tourism the country has managed to get going.

Not just that.

The whole economy would suffer if the protests escalate.

He said that tourism businesses in the private sector were following the news closely like everyone else and fearing the worst.

The  whole country is suffering under the current administration, whose performance is the reason for the protests. Bring in real democracy and the country and economy will flourish.

Maybe if you get a party like future forward (disolved) to rule the country. But if its the old parties there will be more of the same corruption and incompetence. Sure this goverment is bad and should bo. But the democratic governments were riddled with corruption and incompetence too.

Thailand, the new protest hub

On a scale of things you would have to say that Prayut and friends are a bigger problem for the country than the protests. After all, if they hadn't been doing such a terrible job, and treating their citizens like dirt, there wouldn't be any protests.

Next weeks China's arrival could have a guided tour.

Beach, shopping malls, go-go bars, youth demonstrations.

They will feel at home.

  • Popular Post

TAT and other government Ministries will probably make this a tourism promotion.

COME TO THAILAND COVID FREE and enjoy "Free tours of protest sites". After dinner see the demonstrators in jail.

  • Popular Post

Don't blame the protestors, blame the government for deliberately setting up a 'democratic' government which is reality is nothing close to democratic and is in reality a dictatorship aimed at keeping the LOS under a military government.

The protestors are right to demand this all changes and now.

A few months back they were talking about opening the jails for tourism. Maybe people can pay to watch  the protest leaders behind bars

The internet and smart phones are the WORST of the worst of the worst of the worst

But if the Baht drops as a consequence, maybe it could benefit the tourism?

Don't think there are many business people joining in the demonstrations. Whilst some of them may agree to a degree with the principal of the demos, I'm sure their bottom line comes first. And their shop windows come a close second.

Most people in business I know prefer to work around problems rather than rock the boat.

It's academic either way, as nothing is going to change drastically in the next 6 months by which time any potential tourists will have forgotten about the current situation, and the current situation will  be resolved.  He said, hopefully.

I think the government will see the protests are not going to stop, so they will now claim they are finding Covid positive cases as a result of the gatherings and lockdown the entire country in a bid to have more control.....

This is like the wolfs crying wolf (foul). The Regime and their bought cronies only have their own selfish selves to blame for what they stand for, and what they have done to the general public including the making a mockery of the constitution and taking their opponents out during and after the false election. This is not about political allegiance anymore like before, it is about the people and the younger generation have had enough of everything about them even going into their conditioning of each Thai kid from early age to conform and march like a duck. Unbelievable for them to complain.

Principles are more important than money and tourists.

Why blame protesters? Theres no tourism in the first place, so what is it affecting?

But, but... Thaksin.

Let the people decide and respect their decision.

Stop supporting military coups against elected administrations.

Stop believing conspiracy theory Yellow Shirt nonsense propaganda.

So you think that democracy, Thaksin style for example, will repair the economy overnight, and that while the world is reeling under the Wuhan virus?

Dream on......

Democracy often is not bringing any good to the people.

Years ago people would tell me never go to Vietnam, it's a communist country and not safe !  It is a lovely country with very nice people, great for tourists, no speeding mini vans and coaches, efficient travel around the country and plenty more bonuses. Thailand will never even be half as good.  Seriously, Thailand is only worth going to a couple of times to see all the tourist sights and then that's it. Never need to go again.  Now there is still the appointed for life dictator in charge of a huge bunch of dummies and bum lickers who are making it impossible for anybody to go there, and moaning about the lost income ! And as for TAT !  What a joke.
