Is it what people call good Thai food ? What do you think about this dish ?

Is it what people call good Thai food ? What do you think about this dish ?

Hi,

Number one reason why I do not eat Thai food at restaurants anymore: Thai do not know how to cook healthy food !

I am sure that many of you will come with usual bla bla bla, but this is the Thai food that Thai usually cook, even at restaurants that get good reviews.

This dish should taste tomato but it tasted only oil ! I would not give this food even to my dog !

So boring that most people here have no idea about how to cook healthy Thai food.

But maybe you know a good restaurant that cooks healthy Thai food if it is really possible ? (I would consider this one healthy if it had only 10% of oil and if they knew that Chicken with cashew should have cashews and tomato sauce...)

Hard to tell, it looks like stir fried chicken with some veg in chilly sauce, if it is done right it can be tasty but there are many ways to ruin a good dish if you don't know what you doing...

  • Popular Post

I always figured the sauces flavoured the rice, I see a good selection of veg in there and cashews/chicken as far as tomatoes, I find them boring and apart from pesto, a much over rated addition to cooking, ok a bit less oil would obviously be more healthy but most is left on the plate so yes I would eat that and probably enjoy it, especially as it looks to have a nice little kick also.

"I’m a huge fan of Thai cashew chicken, but in Thailand I very rarely order it.

Why?

Because it’s one of those dishes that’s very hit or miss. Oftentimes if you order it at any random street food stall in Thailand, it comes as a few pieces of chicken and cashew nuts, in a lumpy sweet and sour sauce."

https://www.eatingthaifood.com/thai-cashew-chicken-recipe/

The author then goes on to offer a recipe for the dish, with no trace of tomato in it ,"sauce" or otherwise, that is an "Amazing Thai Cashew Chicken Recipe – Authentic and Easy to Make!".

Do they know as much, or as little, as you do?

"Hit or miss"..........Thailand.........could that really be true?

That's really not a Thai dish at all...just one of those recycled Chinese standards modified a bit with Thai spice profile

99.99% Thai do not know how to cook Chicken cashew well and most of the time they anyway do not have the ingredients, I can only eat it at Kiss restaurant pattaya, where they never miss anything, but 100% other restaurants where I ate it, it was worst than dog food, as on the photo.

if only Thai people could cook Thai food, i wonder which country cooks the best Thai food. or is it just one very fussy, complaining customer

Thais do not know how to cook healthy food?????

Thai cuisine has a huge variety. Plenty of healthy options.

You could say the same about farang food. Farangs are a lot fatter.

This looks like GAI PAD MED MAMUANG a dish I have eaten often and thoroughly enjoy when eaten with the correct accompanying dishes.

The one you illustrate does show more liquid than I usually see but as someone else mentioned thats left on that plate anyway as you would spoon the food onto your plate of rice etc. Its not a dish where you would just eat that on its own (usually).

In my experience Thai food can be as healthy as you choose to make it or order it. That liquid or juice etc spooned onto plain rice is also full of flavour in my experience.

Sais the man who thinks Thais use tomato sauce.

I can understand that you don't like the way the particular dish you posted is prepared, but don't you think it's a bit of hyperbole to wholesale condemn one of the most popular cuisines in the world?

You don't like the way prepared the food at that restaurant, go to a different one. You don't think  think it's healthy enough go to ane of many vegetarian restaurants

My wife makes me a killer tofu pad kra pao .

Frankly , I read your OP several times trying to understand what you were complaining about. Perhaps the problem is with me rather than you, and I misunderstood.

Chicken and cashew is not strictly a Thai dish and every place does it a bit different. Some fry the chicken with the vegetables, some deep fry it before hand. Some have lots of vegetables, some have few. One thing I never saw in it is tomato or tomato sauce, not sure where you get that from. Go to McDonald’s if you want to onto sauce!

It really depends on the quality of the cook and restaurant. One of my favorite Thai dishes is pad siew gai.

I eat at a restaurant in Chiang Rai regularly, they don't even bother to ask for my order anymore because they know what I want.

OTOH, there's another restaurant in Chiang Rai that had pad siew gai swimming in so much oil it was inedible.

Never been back, tucker f##kers.

1. It wasn't cooked properly obviously.

2. I agree that's why we only go to places we know the cook knows how to cook.

3. Out the numerous restaurants we have in our village and in our nearby City I can only count on one hand where we would eat.

So sorry to hear you are not eating out anymore. For me, and many others, it is one of the highlights of living here. Most of the restaurants I eat at make beautiful food. Fresh, and delicious. The ones who do not, I don't go back. It is a simple system.

Thais not only know how to make amazing food, they are blessed with the culinary gene, unlike most others. Thai people are the polar opposite of Cuban or Philippine people, with regard to their cooking skills, and their great instincts with regard to the preparation of food. And alot of the food is healthy. I typically order all of my means without pan chulott (MSG).

You might want to step it up a notch. Perhaps you have set your sights too low, with regard to the caliber of restaurants you are choosing. There is some spectacular food here that I am incredibly thankful for!

Utter nonsense. I frequently find that dish done very nicely. I also often prefer it with squid. Absolutely delicious. It can be a gorgeous dish. It depends entirely on the restaurant. You can find good quality here easily, but there are alot of very low end local restaurants, and you cannot expect gourmet food every time you eat out, especially if you are not setting your sights a bit higher.

There are of course loads of incredible Thai restaurants and that is one of the pleasures of living in Thailand; well priced awesome food.

That said, there are also plenty of places where someone decides to open a restaurant but has no real idea of what the food should be like. I think the Op probably ate in one of these places.

Anyone who’s been here for any length of time can tell the difference between good Thai food and poor Thai food, we know exactly what dishes should taste like and can tell when crappy substitutes are used - I think the Op has just found this out too.

You sound like a very grumpy old man who has one dish he eats and gets angry when it is not just like the one place he likes to eat it.  And thinks it has tomato sauce in it!!

Best stick to Kiss where the "ingredient keep in freeze all time" and "sent to any branch in the morning of the day".  I am sure Gordon Ramsey would be impressed were he lucky enough to sample the frozen goodness.

During these covid days, it must be hard to have all fresh items daily if the restaurant has a few slow days. I would rather have a frozen item quickly defrosted than a fresh item which has been kept too long in fridge.

Like with many countries there is no such thing as Thai food. I am sure Thais in Chiang Mai and Thais in Hat Yai will prepare something with the same name in different ways - sometimes very different.

It's like when my gf eats somtam. She likes it from this and that person but not from those people. All are Thais, all prepare and sell food for years. And Thais from different regions of the county like different tastes.

One of my favorite Thai food places is San Sab in Terminal 21. Is that authentic Thai? I don't know. But I like it.

A good restaurant wouldn't use anything like that - even in covid times.

You really are a sad MF.

Come up to the 'boonies' where some of the real Thai cuisine is and sample the local food (excluding bugs!).

Your ''bla bla bla...'' is so comical. My missus is a total health freak when it comes to cooking. She only uses locally grown vegetables from the farmers market that she buys daily in the early morning. Not a farmers wife, a mid-rank admin Gov. official actually.

Please desist in your insults to people that you have no understanding or knowledge of.

As for the local eateries: most are satisfactory and some are very good. A 'Thai' Chinese restaurant nearby does a superb sweet and sour chicken with cashew nuts very similar to the Ops picture but without it swimming in oil. (no tomatoes)

Just look at the diseases profile of thai people, it's a result of the over use of oils, salty sauces,  unhealthy preparation of food, unhealthy agricultural practices, etc etc

OP, you sound pretty clueless when it comes to Thai food. That Peneng chicken and many other Thai dishes are made with coconut milk which is high in oil content..... No surprise as you think Kiss restaurant in Pattaya makes the best Thai food which they are known for as overpriced generic Thai food restaurant to any Thai local there.
