A massive problem for the new Labor minister, he only has a short window to make himself look good in!

Very much so and it has reflective glass.

It is interesting that as the crackdown on foreign teachers took hold a few years back how Thailands standings in English ability began to steadily fall. There is an ignorance at the top of the ladder

  • If they are working without permits then there is obviously a demand for their services. Why not give them permits? Surely improving English standards would be beneficial for Thailand and it

  • Keep diggin yer own grave, Thailand.   You are about as attractive a destination to the average westerner now as Syria.

First, it is the responsibility of the school to provide the paperwork for the teacher to get the work permit.

Second, the government should force all these teacher agencies to follow the laws and regulations, they deny very often the paperwork for foreign teachers.

Finally, why not do a crackdown on all these Thai "English" teacher, who barely can speak and communicate.

' That´s also why they take most of the teachers from the Philippines, even as they know studies and test already proven their language skills are worse than in Thailand.'

You are joking right? See the previous page post Philippines 27th Thai 89th. Get out of the big places and very few Thais speak English, in Philippines not so.

Don't you think this guy has a striking resemblance to Chairman Mao ?    I wish someone would take the gun off these lot they've got no feet left already.......  Thailand once the land of smiles has now turned into the land of crackdowns....... Insanity running riot.......

Check out government schools and EP programs. While some might fudge. most have been all legal for decades. Yes, its true.

but most of the time these schools have teachers in the process of waiting for the work permit

Labor minister Suchart Chomklin who took over at the helm in a reshuffle last year is determined to stop foreigners teaching without a work permit in Thailand.

The easiest way to stop teachers working without work permits is to sack any principal/director of a school hiring them !!

Simple.

Isn't this the annual here we go again thing that happens at the end of every semester?

Simple, but no money to be collected from that, school principles have influence and protection.

Easiest way is to police the hiring agencies I know of at least one that does not follow protocols and tells schools that hey hold the documents and look after everything.

Surely improving English standards would be beneficial for Thailand and its economy.

They did it for millions of illegal migrants from Myanmar

Just maybe they want to ensure they have a TFN & follow rules like my home country.

The good schools already have the "expats" on the payroll & the process is not difficult nor expensive. The schools that don't are just lazy or want to save money by exploiting the "legal" rule so they can pay under the minimum.

Prayut wants to promote and maintain "Thainess". He is succeeding!

Suchart Pornchaiwisetkul of the Department of Employment said that a survey showed that of 922 schools checked there were 6,129 foreign teachers.

...

In the survey eight teachers were found without work permits.

=0.13%, illegal foreign teachers are RIFE!

(Or it's a slow day at the Department of Employment...)

Hiring agencies open & close quicker than the girls in walking street, the police would be going around in ever decreasing circles.

Stop it at the source which is at the schools.

Cut out the end of the chain and it will all collapse.

Because English is the international language for communication and business.

Ships at sea communicate in English.

Aeroplanes communicate in English.

I thought everyone knew that.

absolutely right, but like all decisions here it’s about wrongdoing and money than common sense

Shocking, they will be required to have degrees and teaching skills next, what's the world coming to  ????

That is still no valid reason as to why every Thai citizen (or every citizen from a non English speaking country) should learn English.

Airplanes only communicate in English when they fly international rules. There are five ICAO languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish

So long as ATC and pilot both speak either of those languages. They can freely speak it, and not English.

Really, and how many non native speakers use those languages.

In practice English is the language used.

I have been on many German, Italian and French vessels and they have always used English calling at Saudi, Canaries,  South Africa, Mauritius, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand etc

And how many Thais do you think speak those languages.?

Perhaps because they don't qualify for WPs and aren't qualified to be teachers?

And what qualifications to being an English teacher do schools over here require?

Time on the job?

Being a native English speaker?

Or having a diploma from an online course?

If they are no good as teachers then they will not be employed for very long will they.

Yeah, right.    Logically, you seem to be suggesting that anyone who is "any good at a job" should be allowed to do it, regardless of their qualifications or legal status, as long as they're not "no good" at it?!

A degree to start with to do it legally.

Oddly enough my daughters English teacher at her school is Thai. Her English is shockingly bad. My daughter (fluent in both English and Thai) has been disciplined in the past for correcting this Thai teachers woeful English.

I can assure you my daughter would make a better English teacher than her. With or without a degree.

So will they also go after the farang tourists in Pattaya who bought education visas, the ones who are supposed to be attending schools in Khon Kaen, but are actually managing brothels in and around LK Metro ?

Yes its very important, thats why there are minimum standards and permits for who can teach.

Based on your logic, if there is a high demand for dentists, everyone should be able to be a dentist.

@Peterw42 but is there loads of dentists working without work permits? i doubt it, so i dont know how you can question his logic when your argument has no logic either

You asked what was required, I told you; your daughter's English language ability is irrelevant to the requirements for a foreign teacher to qualify officially for a WP.

The horror! Out of 6129 teachers they found 8 again 8 without working permits!!!!!! I don't know what that is as a percentage but I'll wager its higher than the ministers IQ?
