You cannot use Wetherspoon prices as an average in the UK in the same way you cannot use Bangkok as an average for Thailand.

 

Beer has always been expensive in Thailand. Helps to keep at least some of the riff-raff out.

Anyone know why Dewars white label is so cheap here? about 20 quid in UK, just over 500 baht here.

 

I am not sure where this source is getting its information from.  If you go to any store a 24 pack of Singha bottles is 809tb the cans are less expensive.  That is 33thb per bottle.   a 12 pack of Carlsberg in the USA is approximately $14.99 or about 38.75 thb per bottle.  The last time I purchased a 24 pack of Carlsberg it was about 909 thb or 37..87 per bottle.  

I don't see a huge price difference in beer between the USA and Thailand but wine is a different story.  You can get a very nice 1.5 litre Malbec in the USA for about 279 thb.  You can't buy junk wine here for that price.  

Now beer in the restaurants and bars here Much Much cheaper than USA.  Not unusual to see prices of 60 to 110 thb for 330 Ml. bottle of domestic beer.  Even Heinekens not much more expensive.  Typical price in USA at a restaurant would be between 135 to 210 thb.  If you were in a major city like New York or Chicago even higher than that.

That is my impression (only an impression though) from seeing them on the beach, in the village.......it seems whiskey and soda is the go to drink. I am guessing they get more bang for their buck.

If we're sticking to beer as per the article, a big bottle costs 60 baht at any 7 Eleven or it did last year.

That's close enough to $US2 which is almost half what they're saying. And that's for a big bottle!

Funny how Oz and other countries excluded. 

Wines in Oz are very cheap compared to Thailand and massive selection. Something I definitely miss. And spirits were cheaper buying retail. 

Beers in Oz at local bottle shop were more expensive than local Thai beers unless you bought generic brand beers at places like BWS or ALDI (Queensland nanny state excluded from ALDI selling liquor), or there was a sale on a particular popular brand.  Sales on liquor don't seem to happen here in Thailand.  I could for example buy a dozen 'Steersman Blondes' (generic cold filtered beer similar to San Miguel Light) for $22.00AUD = 440 baht or 37 baht per bottle.  A top brand like 'Pure Blonde' would cost double that or 74 baht per bottle. 

Beers at an Aussie bar are not cheaper than Thailand local bars on average. As a small bar frequenter in Thailand (Pattaya), as opposed to a hotel/club frequenter, the price for a bottle of beer can range from 55 to 90 baht (same standard brand). 90 baht getting closer to Oz prices, but still a bit cheaper.  I steer clear of the rip-off bars here so I don't feel like I have been fleeced after a night out.

The real sting in the wallet here is if the ladies weasel their way to your generous heart and convince you to buy them the dreaded 'lady drinks' rort.  That's when it's game over ????

At 3.7 million baht even single Malt is a bit expensive.

Your right, been away a little over 5 years and just went online to Wollies, Jesus $52 for a box of Tooheys extra dry which I used to buy for around $30-$35 a box if memory serves me right.

Yeh na, 6 pack to the beach is the way to go, but not before buying a box and leaving it at home.

Amazing. Some regressive nimwits do not understand basic economics. By reducing taxes you stimulate the economy. In addition, if Thailand reduces its punitive wine taxes and luxury taxes, they might be able to attract more of those rich tourists they keep droning on and on and on about. The rich are smart with their money. And not only do they enjoy a nice bottle of wine with dinner, their wives also love to spend alot of money on luxury goods while they vacation. Impossible here. Who would buy a Prada handbag for $11,700 here, when you can get it for $4,800 in most world capitals? Same goes for wine. Who would spend $700 for a bottle of wine they could get for $125 at home.

Plus, the silly pricing discourages what could be a vibrant and highly profitable industry here. Major wine tastings and events. And qualified staff. Like you would find in any major resort around the world, but not here. I have been to high end restaurants here, where they knew nothing about the expensive wines on the list! Nothing! The lack of expertise here is a big factor in discouraging wealthy tourists who come here, from returning ever again. 

 

It is referred to as self sabotage, or idiotic policy. An extreme lack of creativity forces retrograde politicians to become overly dependent on import taxes. Dumb and dumber. 

Beer bars and gogo bars contribute to the high price in Bangkok.
