BANGKOK, April 22 (TNA) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said harsher disease control measures may be imposed if existing ones fail to control the latest wave of COVID-19.

Inspecting a new field hospital at Bangkok Arena in Nong Chok district, Gen Prayut said he was satisfied with the new facility which raised the overall number of beds at field hospitals in the capital to 3,000.

Field hospitals serve asymptomatic COVID-19 cases who must observe 14-day quarantine while symptomatic patients must be treated at conventional hospitals.

All due to the government encouraging the citizenry to travel over Songkran and merrily spread the virus to the four corners of the Kingdom.

Harsher measures is just what they want to suppress opposition to their incompetent administration.

I also note that the billionaire health Nut is keeping quiet and out of site recently, since the surge in cases.

All symptomatic Covid patients hospitalised? Why? Gonna run out of beds very quickly...

Do you have evidence for your assertion that the government ENCOURAGED citizens to travel over Songkran.

That was not my recollection, and not what I heard in the PR GOVERNMENT daily briefings.

I am happy to be corrected...

Not unless the rate of testing is significantly increased.

The government is promoting traditional Songkran celebrations for 2021 and hoping Thais will head home for a drier celebration than usual and avoid the big water battles that have become the norm over the past few decades.

The Prime Minister said the Songkran festival is a distinctive part of Thai culture and is celebrated differently in each region. It is a tradition that fosters love and unity in families and communities, as these are the characteristics of all Thais.

However, the COVID-19 situation still has an adverse effect on all sectors. Thai people, together with the public and private sectors, are encouraged to continue Songkran traditions under New Normal conditions and in accordance with their ancestors’ intentions.

They are encouraged to follow the government’s measures, to make the festival a happy and safe celebration. With cooperation from all sides, this year’s Songkran will be a valuable experience.

Booze ban?  Shut down Pattaya and Chiang Mai like they did last year?  Restrict travel even more?  Interprovincial checkpoints?

Ugh...all because they wanted businesses to make a bit of money over Songkran.  What a major screwup.

Encouraging people to travel was one of the reasons for the extended Songkran holiday

There were a number of newspaper articles back in March before the Thonglor/Ekkamai debacle.

One from the BP

"People would be allowed to travel across the country to celebrate, the PM said, but each area must impose measures to prevent the virus spreading.

Gen Prayut said he wanted to see the economy improve and people’s income boosted by tourism activities over the long holiday.

He therefore vowed to ease restrictions ahead of the festival so that people had enough time to plan their trips and make hotel reservations."

With apologies to BKKBrian who was  quicker than me.

If it escalates, you have yourself to blame for allowing people to celebrate Songkran and not banning out-travels from Bangkok.

Life without internet access must be awful

When a government chooses to allow mass covid infections it should expect large numbers of covid infections.

Surely this was factored into their master plan?

as nothing in the text and description under the pix , do those 4 fingers mean

"-Look, I had already 4 different vax and what will be. will be, up to you"?

there are not any info, even slightest, what those measures might be

Seriously?

There is a thread here from the end of March (March 23) "government encourages people to travel this Songkran"  talking about it.

Government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul said that Thais were free to travel at Songkran - it was the government's way of giving happiness to the people

Please keep up with the truth.

Asymptomatic should be allowed to self quarantine at home unless the government want to cover the cost. No one without symptoms should be used to make money & held against their will.

What makes you think that there was ever a plan?

How about scrapping the next long weekend, in May, and limiting interprovincial travel to necessary trips?

That would be a lesson learned from the Songkran spread fest.

There's always a plan, no matter how haphazard or dumb it may look, someone, somewhere actually planned it.

You view is not reflected by the reported spread. In Pattaya it looks like hi so places from visiting weekend Bangkokians were part of the issue. What are the figures for the Issan provinces?

But the new outbreak was not understood until April where it was started by you know who..So March is an irrelevant date. My understanding was that after the realization of a new outbreak Songkran travel though not banned nationally was it  NOT encouraged with various provinces introducing their own measures

Symptomatic Covid patients should be hospitalized. If hospitals run out of beds in Thailand, then we are all in big trouble.

I believe that field hospitals do not charge asymptomatic patients.

Or, it means that no one wants to be stuck in a field isolation facility so most people are avoiding being tested...  ????

Too many photo’s of beds made out of cardboard and now that everyone knows that males and females are separated all the guys know there’s no chance they’ll be in an isolation facility with all the Krystal Girls !!! ????

But....  I do hope you are correct and the reducing numbers in the field isolation facilities (I’m reluctant to call them hospitals) are, along with stabilising numbers ‘daily new cases’ a genuine indication of a reducing trend of cases on the whole.

Again... its all about whether or not we trust the official numbers, something I a little reluctant to accept and wonder if there hasn’t been a prevalence of unmonitored cases throughout Thailand since late 2019 and the reason so few seem to have severe symptoms is that herd immunity has already been achieved - just a thought.
