Manager reported Tourism Authority of Thailand figures that suggested in the first month of the much heralded Phuket Sandbox 14,055 foreign tourists had visited the holiday island and spent 800 million baht.

But they listed Thais as being part of that number in third place of total visitors, notes ASEAN NOW.

On Saturday seven flights arrived with a total of 773 passengers.

This brought the total for July since the July 1st opening to 14,055. Thirty two of these were tested positive for Covid-19.

In total 309,719 nights at SHA+ hotels had been booked on the Shaba site for the period July to September.

July was 109843 night, August 109,694 and September 9,182.

The media said that TAT noted an August slowdown in bookings as the pandemic continued to rage in Thailand.

The list of most visitors under the scheme noted the following nationalities in order of the most first:

1. Americans

2. Israelis

3. Thais

4. British

5. Germans

6. French

Airlines offering services included THAI, Emirates, Ethihad, Singapore and Qatar airlines.

Average spend of each tourist excluding flights was 5,400 baht per day.

These figures were less than average tourist spend pre-pandemic because so little was actually open in Phuket and tourists had few options to spend their money.

Manager said that the number of foreign visitors was "almost 14,000 in their headline. This might account for a quantity being Thais but this was not made clear in an error strewn report.

Hardly much to brag about - lets put this into perspective

This is equivalent to a single large day cruise ship in the Mediterranean carrying 400 people - it is hardly ground breaking tourism and to add that a significant number I suspect were not even tourists but those returning that live here, also offset by costs to set it up and the loss of local tourism

- 400 people odd a day

- Bt800m spent minus hotel costs is about Bt2000 a day

was it really worth it ?, plus we have a massive drop in Sept - hardly enough to fill a couple of hotels - what then ?

It's 800.000.000 for one month divided by 30 days = 26.666.666,66666667 a day, divided by 14.000 tourists = 1.904,761904761905 a day per tourist. So 1.900 baht.

I find this figure difficult to comprehend given the last 12 months of covid and many millions lost their jobs.

but, some may have spent that and some more.

"Phuket Sandbox: 14,000 "foreign" tourists have spent 800 million baht - spending options limited"

Perhaps more short time spending to overcome the limits? But I have to admit that I am not an expert for family tourism.

I'd guess that almost all of the Americans are returnees (two of my American friends are completing their sandboxes today and lamming out to Pattaya on today's last Nok Air flight to Utapao). If they wanted a tropical holiday, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Hawaii are much better options at the moment.

Short time spending?

I assume that most of these supposed tourists are actually people who would normally be living here. Otherwise, why would anybody in their right mind want to visit an over-priced island where most entertainment venues are still shuttered, as I understand it, in a country that has lost control of the delta variant and is itself a dangerous place to be right now. Surely, there are cheaper and better options available for genuine western tourists.

But not the bitches. Sorry just another bad word prediction at my device. I meant the beaches and all the people enjoying them for whatever reason.

So that amounts to the price of the fake quarantine ( hotels, tests, etc.) How much of a drop in quarantine revenue was reported by TAT for the rest of Thailand? Maybe 800 million baht?

Morons ! it has to be ! Risking their lives to holiday and irresponsible to allow this to happen . Responsible governments have shut their borders.

I would hazard a guess and say swimming pool lesions.

Possibly total expenditure, including hotels etc etc.... not sure how much got to street level where it's needed.

So is that including the daily cost of their hotel ?? ????

This amount does not include the banging of rfd's. You can double it easily.

Most western nations put together comprehensive financial packages to support workers and small business.

In the UK the furlough scheme saved a great many jobs and in fact ( because of strict lockdowns) considerable numbers of people saved money during that time.

Its a pity Thailand's ,so called leaders , didn't show the same concern for the majority of their citizens.
