The government gazette announced a ban, effective immediately, on all public gatherings that could result in the spread of Covid-19.

The sweeping powers are a step up on previous declarations and will be seen by many as a means to help the government legitimize their crackdown on dissent, notes ASEAN NOW.

Daily News said that the ban is nationwide and would result in jail terms of 2 years and/or 40,000 baht fines for violators.

Anti-government protests were held at the weekend and there were reports of tear gas and rubber bullets being fired in Bangkok.

The wording of the order gave some leeway for certain activities given permission to continue.

Meanwhile Daily News also reported that the Royal Thai Police were spending 137 million baht more on riot equipment.

They reported this along with a picture of the massed ranks of anti- riot clad police on a road and the headline: "You mean you don't have enough already?"

The RTP plan to spend 129,580,000 baht on 6,820 tear gas helmets.

Plus 8,052,000 baht on 660 sets megaphones and sound amplification equipment.

They have already announced a deal to buy five anti-riot assistance vehicles for 87.8 million baht, added the media.

Convenient. Nobody would bat an eyelid if the country wasn’t essentially a dictatorship. Yuck!

So, that is all gatherings then. Otherwise, they might be helpful in explaining what ones that can not result in the spread of Covid-19.

Money well spent boys.... How many vaccines can you buy with that? Just asking...

Oh don't worry, for sure the police have all been vaccinated!

Or am I (along with the ruling establishment) missing the point somewhere?

I'm sure it's a total coincidence that the we've got super scary stories in the news about the horrors of fast-spreading covid at the same time as people looking to protest.

But not on vaccines which would negate the reason for a ban.
