Covid, like many other conditions, can of course be significant if someone is particularly vulnerable either by old age or other conditions but to simply say 5 million deaths as if covid was the sole cause of  death is simply too stupid to elicit a reply

Covid deaths are established by medical examiners.

You are hand waving away millions of Covid deaths because they are inconvenient to your worldview.

Good idea......by moving the date they have at least managed to ensure everyone crosses Thailand off their Christmas and New Year holiday list......Phew!

  • Actually, this is great news. It has been so peaceful in Thailand since the bars were closed. There is no reason to rush the opening of these venues. This delay will enable more citizens to get vaccin

Outstanding news, Thanks K.Prayut.

Loi krathong xmas new year busy time for tourist and thailand.they want tourist so they shut the bars and clubs to the middle of jan.

That made my decision to come after that date if no change,Everyone will think the same and keep waiting, not what thai people want if jobs  are on the line.7/11 will be very happy and raking it in while others will not be happy

The obsession over booze and bars opening continues.  Is this the doomers new favorite squeaky toy?

Any visitors will have made their bookings for the next month or so in full awareness of the current nightlife restrictions as no announcements have been made confirming the opening of entertainment areas before this one.  This is not a tightening up of restrictions, it's an easing.

The largest operator of bars/clubs in Thailand expressed surprise and disappointment at the announcement yesterday. It was their understanding that venue reopening was imminent and that was based on advice from government.

This if a negative extension of existing restrictions that damages the people and the tourist sector. Why people would defend that is beyond me.

November 1st was officially announced, there was no announcement of entertainment restrictions lifting on December 1st...that's probably why you don't know where you read it.   Thaivisa speculators don't count!

Well I remember reading it.

1 December.  And now 15 January what the next date 1 March ???  Tired of this country really !!!!

This is the stupidest opening date.  Telling me that it is about covid is like telling me that China and India are the most climate friendly countries in the world.

You can say it all you want but I am not buying.

The date is in order to cut down on the number of Thais that get drunk and stupid over the NYE period and kill themselves.

It is about placating the anti-drink crowd.

20 days is not going to make a big difference.

Next to possibly Songkran NYE is the biggest money making date for bars in Thailand and many other countries.

Mid January is the stupidest time to open most people have spent their holiday money.  There are no holidays and bars may open but there will not be a lot of partiers.

Imagine if they announced not only that Thailand was open for business but that bars and pubs and dancing places were also starting 20 December .

I believe it when I see it - for now I'm filing this under "things that are not going to happen"....

They're drip feeding snippets of 'bad news' to soften the blow.

Or flip flop before the said date and change it to earlier to look like they are being pro active and Mr. Nice Guys.

The obsession continues because a large % of Thailand's GDP depends on tourism, and tourism depends on booze and bars despite what teetotallers would have you believe!

From the above article:-

"In addition, by 1st December, Thailand will also consider allowing the consumption of alcoholic beverages in restaurants as well as the operation of pub, bars and other entertainment venues."

You obviously didn't read the important "consider" word! They've considered and approved  alcohol in restaurants, but considered and not approved alcohol in pubs, bars and other entertainment venues

Vietnam is looking more enticing every day

Anywhere but Thailand is looking more enticing every day.

Fixed it for you.

In my area of phuket you would be very hard pushed to find a bar that ISNT open. And I don’t mean bars masquerading as restaurants, I mean straight up common or garden bars and bar complexes. Despite the governor supposedly issuing orders that bars remain closed. Most don’t even bother to close early if they actually have customers.

From the current announcement;

"may be allowed to reopen from January 16th"

Should we be more encouraged by the current verbiage than the previous?

I guess the scary words are “ Subject to assessment”……Gives the ring of a loose date if you ask me.

So no beer bars open in Hua hin , Pattaya , Koh Chang etc until jan 2022 ?

"Subject to assessment" says it all. Not going to happen as another "good reason" will be found to keep the nightlife shut for good. This is all part of the planned destruction of Pattaya based on the dream to make it become a "Miami" 5-star holiday destination for rich tourists and families! Keep dreaming!

And in other news "Let's hold a music festival in Pattaya" oh and try to attract some "famous" Korean pop singer, to attract tourists! You couldn't make this s#17 up.

In Pattaya they need a bit more time to demolish some more of them!

Well at least people who enjoy having a New Year's binge now know that they don't need to bother coming to Thailand. See you for Songkran, eh?

Anecidol evidence from around thailand would seem that pattaya is a no 1 close down target even when covid is less than other parts in fact 3rd most vaccinated that said treetown was busy

Second week of jan is a stab in the back for small bar/resturant owners.

no doubt another agenda here.

And clearly the agenda is agreed by local provincial/town government and police, otherwise there would be a lot more blind-eyes being turned towards Prayut policy, as seemingly exists in many (most?) parts of Thailand.

Well that's New Year screwed then.

Tourists at that time come for party.. ain't happening in Thailand.

Watch the interest plummet.

Let's see if I've got this right. The main reason for openning the borders is to try and save the tourist industry and inject money back into the economy yet one big part of the tourist industry is the nightlife which remains closed.

A year and a half ago folks were offering predictions on when 'things would get back to normal'. The guesstimates ranged from "June" to the then-very pessimistic "end of 2020". When those dates passed guesstimates shifted to "June 2021" to "Dec". Now we're looking at mid-Jan.

As winter sets in in the Northern Hemisphere, what is becoming increasingly apparent is that Covid is like the relative or college buddy who shows up at your place and will sleep on your couch 'just for a day or two'. A month later he's still there and is getting Amazon deliveries at your house.

"Breakthrough" infections are, in some cases, quite serious. Some of the mRNA vaccines are showing massive drops in protection after 4-6 months, requiring booster shots. Covid is signalling loud and clear that it is not going to go away. I shudder to think what the headlines are going to be in Germany or the US or Japan come January.

Unless this new Pfizer pill turns out to be as effective as initial reports indicate, the world---including Thailand---is going to have to decide if we are all going to live a sheltered life until the sun burns out (actually, it's going to mini-nova in 1.5 billion years and reduce Earth to a burned out cinder...for you science buffs) or else we're going to accept that life has a new threat that is going to take a good many people and cost a lot in terms of healthcare. (Optimists can say that if US GDP is 18% healthcare now, it will be 25% in time due to Covid). The Greek alphabet might have to be expanded, too, as soon we're going to get to the Omega Variant and need news letters.

Jan 16? If the numbers in Germany ( a harbinger of things to come everywhere) et al keep looking ugly, that date, too, will be moved back......and back......and back.

I swear I walked past the entrance of Nana Plaza in BKK the other day and "World's Largest Adult Playground" had been replaced by Dante Alighieri's "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here".

Quite so, they have already killed off the bulk of real tourism,  why do they bother with this empty retoric.
