Thailand is not among the over 100 countries the Biden administration has invited to its “Summit for Democracy” next month, according to a list of participants published on Tuesday which also sees Taiwan as one of the invitees,  a move that infuriated China, which views the democratically governed island as its territory.

Reuters reported that there are 110 participants on the State Department’s invitation list for the virtual event on Dec. 9 and 10, which aims to help stop democratic backsliding and the erosion of rights and freedoms worldwide. The list does not include China or Russia.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said the government would be represented by Digital Minister Audrey Tang and Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan’s de facto ambassador in Washington.

Did Joe get Thailand and Taiwan mixed up or did he think that they were the same Country ?

Did Austria and Australia both get an invite ?

Yup... selective bullying in the works. Exclude those governments not aligned with the bully's governance system.

No, President Biden can actually point out countries on a map. He also knows China and India share a long common border (and have historical issues over it), and would never call some South Asian countries Nipple and Button.

I've been wondering why DDCI Cohen met with PM last week, as it was a bad optic, all things considered, for the DDCI to meet with a fellow who came to power via a coup and who retained power in an election many say was fraudulent. Perhaps Cohen was quietly delivering a message that Thailand would not be invited to this Democracy summit.

Then again, maybe David just wanted to take advantage of a C-17 always on call on his behalf. It's kind of exciting to refuel mid-air, too.

How about actual real live Democracy rather than monuments and virtual meetings on it!

It's not just Thailand but a wonderful snub to multiple autocracies and dictatorships out there that try to pretend they are a democracy. They might fool the locals, but not the world.

Having slip to a new low in global ranking in democracy ranking by Freedom House due to drop of civil liberties, unequal treatment of minority groups, damaging influence of money in politics and increased polarization, shouldn’t the summit be held in a higher ranked countries like Argentina or Mongolia.

Pres. Biden be prepared. Submarines will be delivered much quicker now.

Not that the US has a democracy to brag about according to a report by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance of Sweden:

A present wave of democratic erosion around the globe is part of a larger historic cycle of progress and regression, according to the author of a report released this week designating U.S. democracy as “backsliding” for the first time.

As Prayuth always said" Thailand has its own democracy and that is not the same as in other countries".. Now no wonder that they are not invited in the normal world democracy summit.. It is going better and better ... National flag will not raised at international sports events, Miss Universe under fire, Cambodians deported to Cambodia.... Yeah yeah  it is going better and better

No problem they will be hosting the CCP summit!

“Summit for Democracy”

Did the Americans invite all those people so that they can learn how democracy is supposed to work?

Or do those Americans still have the delusion that they are a sample democracy? 555

Stop the steal and all that - it almost worked and the guy who incited it all is still running around free and still supported by many million Americans. What a strange country.

Surely the general could order an invite dose Joe know who he is? we only fire on protesters and jail everyone in sight for the most innocuous reasons once or twice a day  my 112 is welcomed all around the country and We pay 300bt per vote ????

I thought this topic was about Thailand.

Yes, this topic is about USA/Biden not inviting Thailand to a meeting

I don't know the reason for the snub -- if that's what it is -- but I would not worry about the US of A alienating Thailand too much because, if you look at the map, Thailand is the closest the US can get for land-based intelligence on large parts of Sothern China without being in a Communist ruled country.

The US has its own fair share of issues on the matter such as fascist elements threatening the system itself, the trias politica not fully separated (presidents appointing judges who themselves also often have a political agenda), and a bunch of old white men (electoral college) and not the people electing an old white president. And there's the big tech of course that operates in a total legislative vacuum because those same old men don't have a clue what they're dealing with. US democracy has become quite the oxymoron the last few decades. Funny that this country feels the need to lead a summit when its own democracy can succumb to non-democratic elements in a matter of years...

Absolutely. The future of American democracy is under grave threat by very dark forces that we saw during the January 6th insurrection/coup attempt. They still control one of the two major parties in the U.S. But it's good for the current U.S. president who actually is pro democracy to at least attempt to be a leader on this issue as it is an international one.

People would if his predecessor didn't keep (falsely) insisting he won the last election.

Trumps fault that everyone keeps mentioning him and not the actual people who actually keep mentioning him then

I guess we just bough too many of those Chinese vaccines?

That´s probably because they do not fill the dots for being a democracy.

Thailand should be thankful they were not invited as america has no idea what democracy means.

A number of off-topic, trolling and name calling posts have been removed.

This topic is in the Thailand news forum.  Those looking to re-bicker over the past U.S. presidential election are going to have to find a different place to do that.
