The authorities of Pattaya City and Burapha University jointly drafted the “Pattaya City Development Plan 2023-2027” to develop Pattaya into a tourism city of the future, Mayor Sonthaya Klunplome revealed yesterday, December 8th.

The plan is designed to make Pattaya, according to officials, the “Tourism City of the Future”.

The five-year strategy will focus on a balance of economy and environment, quality aspects of lives, including health, education, society, and environment, and an increase of alternative career skills for young generations in the digital era after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Mayor said: “Due to about two years of the Covid-19 domestic spread, Thailand has to make a huge development in many ways. For Pattaya,  the change is somewhat in line with the NEO PATTAYA plan that we have started 3 years ago for sustainable tourism in the future.”

“Therefore, this five-year development strategy was planned by all related sectors and has potential to support the EEC (Eastern Economic Corridor) tourism hub and current multicultural lifestyle to make Pattaya a city of international economic opportunity once again.”

The plan will be proposed to the Pattaya City Council, introducing five main tasks including: 1. Improving the quality of life and safety; 2. Upgrade infrastructure efficiency to support the EEC; 3. Promote economic and environmentally-friendly innovation; 4. Sustainable management of natural resources and environment; 5. Enhance Pattaya City to a modern and highly efficient organizational city.

So, who thinks this will work ?

It won't work because:

1) Low education and lack of ambition of the population

2) Lack of quality natural resources

3) Lack of quality engineering

4) Rampant air and water pollution.

Most cities today are not if you build it they will come. It is we are already rich and getting richer. That said they certainly can improve it some.

Given the huge number of world class thinkers, futurists and engineers in Thailand I'd say they were right on track...

Does this mean they're gonna fix the drains, flooding and beach problems?

Or are they just putting a bit of lippy on the pig?

Akin to putting lipstick on a pig. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE our porky little city, and so have millions of tourists over the years. Leave it the hell alone, it was doing fine before y'all started thinking of meddling.

you mean you actually understood what they were talking about

this is just a pile of lip service to justify a budget they are going to let on they spent on Pattaya

Its empty and derelict now and has been for 18 months so go for it or five years from now it may be a bit back to what it was, and will still be talking about making a world class city.

But maybe chinese could but not thais.

This will work as well as Pinocchio's promise to cap the lottery ticket scam at 80 baht/ticket.

Perhaps a good start would be to complete the deathtrap footpaths....small steps required.

Times they are changing. Will there be the types of tourist who needed the sin when they got a break from work. In my own case, working in the Middle East, demographics were already changing. Local people were filling jobs cheaper, aided by 3rd world cheap labour. I suspect fewer of these types would visit the Pattaya of old. Look at European Countries, they are well into decline due to various factors. The new Pattaya tourists will come from China, Korea, Japan..... nearby, domestic too.

I heard something of the plans for nuevo Pattaya they have.... all well and good. But I do agree with a poster above who claims 'it is putting lipstick on a pig'...... like the current plan to put drainage and bury cables on Threppasit..... when that is done, it will still be a traffic jam with slums on each side.

I suppose a tourism city of the future is better than what Pattaya is right now: a tourism city of the past!

Sure they are that's #2: upgrade infrastructure with more bs kickback projects.  And that's with #3: environment friendly innovations, that is putting more  parking garages  in the most ridiculous locations imaginable.  And don't forget #1: improve quality of life and safety. So look for more bogus traffic lights that Thais ignore and a special motorbike lane on the beach promenade... Hello Jomtien

Look no further than Sihanoukville, a few hundred km down the coast to see what China can do.
