I think what makes a good life, is when you do not have to do anything, and you do things that feels good, give you a interesting day, and you do not feel stuck somewhere. I have met some expats who are stuck in the village and 100% depending on the wife and her family. Little or no network around them, and the few they rely on, useally only meet up for drinks.

Also not only depending on the situation in Thailand, and have enough so if something happens in near future, it is possible to relocate, either from the village and inside Thailand, or able to leave Thailand and relocate somewhere else.

However I like living boring, taking care of animals, my motorbikes, our little farm, our trips around in Thaialnd, still hitting the gym for lifting and boxing, diving, kayaking, hiking, and food experiences. But still boring in the long run for some reasons.

Have also a nice Isan lady who treat me good as one mentioned before here. It is give and take, and try to do the best for each other. Without here, I would have moved on, and possible to a new destination somewhere.

I'm intrigued, what is that? Yes I can read, but what kind of meat is that?

What do I have to look forward to? A long slow painful death.

I look forward to the pain killers and anti inflammatories kicking in every day, these aches and pains keep getting worse- so I don't think much of getting older. ????

Have you tried changing your diets, drinking, or anything else that can give a relief? Also moving your body, training is proven to help many with mobility problems and pain. Hard work but for most it can be done to improve life and life quality.

If I sit down and do nothing, skip the gym for a month, the pain in my joints starts, and if I eat chicken, drink to much to often inflamation starts in my body, so I had to take a grip on my life and change many things to improve and finely get on top of everything.

It is a boring life,  but a good life

What's work?

You remember if you force yourself.

It's that annoying habit of waking up too early, shaving/showering (ugh), climbing into a car and competing with too many others to arrive safely (or not) at a place you don't want to be, with people you don't want to see, performing a task that is probably devoid of any satisfaction and that you don't want to do. In return for this we earn the right to repeat each day ad infinitum until we die.

Then....... we wake up one day, realize there's more to life, and walk away to find something more rewarding. Some of us find it some don't.

Don't fret though because you have found it and it's natural to suppress traumatic events in your past life.

We few, we lucky, we who escaped and don't look back.

More of the same without the work.

It will take a some time before I will retire. Obviously then I won't "work" anymore. But apart from that I imagine that my life won't change much.

More or less my whole (working) life I made sure that it is not all about work. Time for coffee, time for extended lunch breaks, working not too late to have time to go out. If possible don't work on weekends, etc.

Obviously I also had some times in my life where I had to work a lot and sometimes it was stressful. But I made sure that is not "normal".

I think it is sad when some people, or maybe many, work (hard) all their life because they dream about enjoying their retirement. Why wait so long?

If I die today and I have a minute or two to think about my life then I can think about all the fun and good time and I don't have to think about what I would have done when I retire. Because I did that already long before my retirement.

I look forward to being able to travel internationally again--there are lots of places I would like to visit for the first time.  In the meantime, I look forward to every day, happy I am alive and in relatively good health, with a partner to enjoy going through the day with.  This beautiful morning I am sitting by the pool with my coffee, checking the news, easing into my day.  Life is good.

waking up to another day..which one day will not happen..be grateful for the life i have .. but most important that big smiling face of my 4 year old son ...lifes good

I do believe that I was lucky in my working life, because I enjoyed most of it, from the learning experiences gained from an electrical engineering apprenticeship, which allowed me to travel overseas to work on oil installations, which is always exciting and sometimes dangerous work, and very well paid.

When I gave that up I got into sales management and started in a management position in Rank Xerox and enjoyed managing and coaching my team to successes.

Over to New Zealand, and becoming Director of Sales and Establishment Marketing for American Express NZ was a brilliant job and brought so many benefits with it – – sales conferences in Hawaii, Singapore, New Caledonia and trips to the Cook Islands, Australia and so on, and being able to have a practice game of tennis with Steffi Graf, sailing the America's Cup Challenger yacht around Auckland Harbour and much, much more, and it was probably the best job of my life.

I moved on to become Chief Manager in a major New Zealand bank and launched an extremely successful sales through service program which was even acclaimed by the Banking Ombudsman!

Then on to setting up an investment programme for the same bank and building our funds up to just under $2 billion before I left. It was this last part that caused me a huge amount of stress and a medical condition which could have killed me, and I had to make a huge change in my life, so I retired at the age of 55 and moved here.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that work wasn't all drudgery for me, and for the most part I enjoyed the travel, challenges, colleague and customer interfaces, as well as the chance to experience new things, even as far as being a personal guest (and friend) of the then Prime Minister of NZ on several occasions!

Back to the subject at hand, and the two do tie in, because from having a mostly successful, challenging and exciting working life, I've now come down to nothing to keep the grey matter working, and I can't find anything here that stimulates my one remaining brain cell, hence my post about – – "waking up" and about looking for wine.

On the upside, I have learnt how to relax, and even now that becomes difficult to do, but I am having a lot of practice at it!!

So you think I would want to watch a show called The Boys?

8 years and lucky.  Choose carefully cause it’s a huge investment, and you need both pre-nups and leases for your security and peace of mind.  Of course, it helps to have a bit of money, too.
