Foreign tourists have water fights in Chiang Mai - police have a word and local authority turn off the pipe

Muang Chiang Mai police went to investigate after foreigners and Thai tourists engaged in water fights contrary to regulations.

The tourists were using water from a pipe that had not been turned off. They took this as an open invitation to have a water fight, claiming they didn't know there was a ban.

Most people were not wearing masks. The fighting was going on in the City Gate area.

Pol Col Phuwanat Duangdee said that the local authority later turned off the water as his men asked people not to have water fights.

Some continued despite the police intervention.

No arrests were reported.

Thai Rath had "I am sorry" transliterated into Thai in their headline though no one had appeared to apologize.

Looking at those pics and others on social media the vast majority engaging in water fights were Thai's.

Maybe, but respectful tourists would abstain. Now, I agree that Thais don't need much of a motivational speech to behave like morons.

Did you read the op?  There were also Thai people there too!

Yes, but they do not put a bad stamp on us or tarnish our reputation in Thailand.

I am also sad for no arrests. They should be deported immediately.

And yes, I have read the OP. Makes you lame reply as an excuse pathetic.

Deported for water fights?

Execution for not wearing masks perhaps?

Looks like the police used a sensible approach.

If there are  foreign tourists, it is useful to use English to tell everyone what the rules are, instead of only the THai language wich is only understandable for the local people.. Announce on websites, social media, travel forums and more that there is ban of water splashing with Songkran. People who know can decide to come or not stay away, But Thailand want the tourists but will do nothing to inform them. With mistakes they get high fines.... You can't blame the foreigners...A tourist wants to relax and be happy, drink a bit of alcohol when he/she wants and where, but in Thailand with all the restrictions it is not a holiday destination yet.. Much better places are there for tourists now and the ones who are here will tell their family and friends too... So Thailand, wake up and hire some people who know what to do about this

Yes, they should start deport people coming to this country that can´t hold themselves within the laws and rules. Will be much nicer and better here after that.

I'm not sure what the problem is.  The Chiangmai Municipal office issued a schedule that supposedly okays that area (as shown in the photo) for a water war.  The exact wording on the site says: "April 13-15, 10AM to 5PM, In front of the Amora Thaephae Hotel - Thaphae Gate Plaza, Songkran Water Splashing Tunnel."

What the heck did they think was going to happen there, a tea party?

Yeah but a foreigner was spotted earlier in the morning so that counts.

Something up with these headlines.  I can't quite seem to put my finger on it... ????

Well, expats tend to be older and not like the water throwing, tourists like it but are few on the ground, so yes, the majority will be Thai.

My friend there said it was widely publicized that there was to be an official parade and waterfights.

I said that I thought it was banned for all thailand, but I did follow that up with..."of course my last knowledge is from two weeks ago.  Flip Flops are official political shoes worn here"

What do you expect if you advertise locally that it's an event allowed?

The guy on the left of the photo is struggling to put up waterlogged early Christmas decorations.

I guess these pesky tourists do not read Aseannow, then they would know everything they need to know about Thailand.

Not an easy call for the police.  Thailand is desperate for tourists  and will always turn a blind eye if it is likely to affect the tourist numbers.  Those instructions will be from the top down so don't expect any change in the near future.

In the 2 pictures the majority of people are Thais, whether they are tourists or not.

I have my doubts that there are many thousands of foreign tourists that will remain after Songkran, unless they

are single people, as it is school season around the world now.

The police know better than to annoy the Thais anymore than they do. TIT.

Dunno where you come from..

all people should comply with the government rules --tourist or not  . police want to apply the law with a heavy foot

That is exactly what they did not do hence an amicable outcome.
