Daily News Thai Caption: So what if I don't get out of the way

Netizens were commenting in numbers after the head of a rescue foundation detail in Phuket in southern Thailand posted a video.

Anit Jenrop - chief of the Kusontham Phuket rescue - posted a 40 second video showing a BMW 320i deliberately blocking him in an ambulance carrying an accident victim.

And it got worse; despite the siren wailing and finally issuing a desperate plea over the loudspeaker to get out of the way that resulted in the BMW driver slamming on the brakes when the road ahead was clear.

Anit told Daily News he had picked up a woman who had road rash after an accident and was on the way to Vachira Hospital.

He implored the public to please allow ambulances to pass whether they are sounding their siren or not.

Many people have pointed out that the fine for blocking an ambulance - 500 baht - needs to be changed or such incidents will continue.

I like the Swiss model; fines are proportional to offenders salary. If the offender is offensively rich, the judge can assign additional penalties. The largest penalty applied to date is 10.6 Million

Happens when you kiss the pavement for 10 or 20 meters. Similar to rug burn, but not as fun.

We have to accept that some people, maybe a large number of people,  are just dumb, irresponsible, anti social,  entitled dick heads.  Its the way of some humans I am afraid, but it is not yet a legal offence, unfortunately.

Take their license off them for 6 months for first offence and they may not do it again a poultry 500 baht fine wont do anything to stop those a*£holes who do it from doing it again .

Taking licenses off them will do absolutely nothing. They will just continue to drive without a license.

Proper punishment would be heavy fines, if not paid then vehicle confiscated, or prison time.

For this idiot, should be arrested, fined and jailed as an example. A month would be sufficient.

raise the fines to a percentage of the value of the car they are driving in.... That will teach them.. The people in the biggest and most expensive cars are biggest assh* on the roads... If they can afford a car like that they can pay the fine too... but 500 THB is nothing a shame in fact

Road rash is usually when falling off a motorcycle and the long scrape or burn one revives skidding along the road.  Very painful.

After paying out big money for a BMW he probably felt put out that someone had the audacity to try and overtake him in a measly ambulance.

I see it on my scooter sometimes. Pass a red plate Merc or BMW or other expensive brand and they get all aggressive as if it a scooter has no right to overtake them.

The driver ended up pulling over and stopping to let the ambulance by so not as bad as they are making it out to be.

Watch the video again, the driver had plenty of opportunities to pull over and let the ambulance pass. Please explain why the driver braked suddenly for no apparent reason

I wonder if those "many people" also see most rules as being advisory only...

He implored the public to please allow ambulances to pass whether they are sounding their siren or not.

A shake up of who gets to use the road must surely come to end the primitive skills displayed here ????

Just change the law. If someone does not have the decency or consciousness to get out of way of an ambulance, then force them to by law. How about confiscating the vehicle for 60 days, and asking them to pay a 100,000 baht impound fee to get it back?

Or suspension of the drivers license?

Some people are simply incapable of doing the right thing. Society needs to deal with them harshly.

What was with that woman in her Benz last week who was sitting 5 hours in her car and refused to open the door for the cops?

500Bht fine what a joke, it should be at least 5000Bht and drivers licence for min. 6 month, for 1. offence and double for second time offence

Fall off your motorcycle at speed and see what happens...

most Thais I know either have an example of road-rash or exhaust burn.

Pure ego.

Buffalo consciousness.

Don't ask me to pull over. I do as I please.

There is no deterrent and I possess no decency, so why not behave like a fool?

Every ambulance should have, as standard equipment, a front bumper manufactured especially for occasions such as this. My suggestion? A marine grade stainless steel rsj - perfect for levelling the hi so ego

Just spend some time at any Thai Hospital A & E Dept, and you will soon see how common it is.

Simple enough , just make deliberately impeding an emergency vehicle a car crushing offence. No ifs not buts, straight in the crusher
