Yesterday a friend of mine almost got into a fight with a foreigner when we were out at Sukhumvit. There was an underaged girl maybe 10 years out at midnight selling small packages of some candy. He gave her 100 baht. She come back and show the candy. He say he didn't want it and that he can not eat mint. She punch him in the back with the candy bucket. He say he don’t want it and say he gave her his last cash. She drag his shirt. He say he don’t want and again NO CASH. She started to stare at him. He say no more cash, got a bit annoyed and showed her his CreditCard asking can you take another 100 from this. Of cause she could not. Another foreigner noticed and got upset and say "You don’t do that to a kid". He tried to explain that he gave 100 already and just didn't want to be bothered by the little girl any more. The foreigner started to make a mess and screamed "Just give her 20 Baht and if you do not giver her 20 Baht I do". My friend told him "I gave her 100 Baht already" He did not listen. I also try to tell him my friend gave the Girl 100 baht already. He got more and more angry. Started to scream at my friend and guards started to show up. And then he told my friend to give the girl 100 Baht, he say "I gave her 100 already" then the Foreigner Showed him 100 baht note and shouted "If you do not give the girl 100 Baht I will do" and he gave the girl another 100 Baht My friend tried to tell him again that he gave her 100 already. But seamed like he only got more angry. We just left...

 

Why do people behave like this? Ok, I agree show a CC to a begging person is not nice, but she was annoying him several times. He showed it to show he didn't have any more cash.

 

What does this teach the poor little girl? If she annoy people enough she will get another 100 baht? Girls in that age should not be out that time anyway.

 

Alcohol?

I would never have even interacted with a lone underage girl at that time of night, and giving her 100b is just pure foolishness.

Many are spoiling for a fight......running out of money, future prospects looking grim, gf trouble........best never to bite, be polite and walk away......if you get the chance.

 

Sat on soi 11 the other day.........Brit', big guy, well dressed.......sat by himself at the bar.......suddenly starting screaming in the face of this tiny black guy about an avocado tattoo he'd seen on someone's arm..........the black sat still, kept quiet and eventually the mama san managed to usher the weirdo out.

These young beggar girls working the bar scene are not alone. If you look around you with see their parents or other relatives not to far away watching carefully.

Is Soi 11 recovering much lately.  We popped down there a few times 2020/21 to SOHO Pizza & Cantina.  Last time there, they advised will be closed for dine in, just outdoor counter service or delivery.   Guess not enough customers to justify turning on the AC.  It was a dead zone.

Some years back i was sitting with others at an outdoor restaurant on the beach at Patong, quite late . I was suddenly on the receiving end of a full body hug from behind. It was a small girl selling flowers, very worrying. I was quite abrupt in telling her to leave, she didn't make a sale. I don't know who told her to approach men that way, but I would have liked to get my hands on them.

Someone with a camera could have taken a seemingly compromising pic.

Quite lively.....all three/four street bars had customers......but soi 7 is/was still closed so that might have boosted their numbers.

Some of those young street's urchins ones are nothing but pests, skilled in getting money out of foreigners by making them feeling guilty for having money, been here long enough to come across them many, many times, best to pay no minds to any of them...

I think this little girl learned yesterday that if she is annoying enough she will get some money, and if she continue to be even more annoying she will get more.

As far as I know most (all?) beggars, and certainly the kids, are mafia controlled. They have to beg for money. And they have to do it aggressively. And if they don't do that there are bad consequences.

Keeping that in mind there will be also misunderstandings because of the language and cultural differences.

And then there are of course others who like to get involved.

A lose/lose/lose situation.

Those girls are run by gangs. The more cash they get for their gang leader, "the better" for them. (You can give them 500, 1,000, or 5,000 baht, and they won't even thank you, but, instead, ask for more cash or things to buy, till you stop giving or buying, as they don't even get to keep 1 baht of it!) - Do not give cash, or buy from them. There are other and better ways to help poor people, rather than giving to the thugs who 'employ' those girls.

Absolutely right, however they know that people have had a good drink by then and may be more loose with their cash.

Ever hear of Oliver Twist?  Well, that is what your friend encountered.

 

The children begging are not in the care of their parents or relatives.  They are bought or rented by brokers from their families and passed on to Oliver Twist type mangers.  Many are illegally trafficked from Cambodia, Lao, or Burma.  Their sole job is to get money for their managers by begging, and being annoying is one way of increasing their income.  I wouldn't be surprised if the annoying foreigner was part of the scheme and his job was to increase the amount of money your friend, or you, gave the child.

 

You should report them to the police but don't do that.   If you do don't be surprised if nothing happens, or you even get into trouble because the police are part of the scam.

 

The best thing to do is just walk away.  If the child becomes a problem walk into a bar or restaurant, and if necessary spend your last 100 Bt there.  The beggar has to meet a quota for the night so they can't afford to spend time waiting for you to come back out.
