2am seems more than reasonable to me, a balance between common sense and responsible governing should prevail. Let the industry workers go home and sleep for at least some of the night when we are supposed to be sleeping!! Who really needs to drink all night, those are probably the tourist sector that we can do without.

"All night"? Just because 7Eleven is open 24 hours per day doesn't mean I spend all my time there. I just go in, get what I need and leave. At my convenience. Surely the same would apply for a bar. Maybe I just finished a meal at 11:30 pm and want to visit a few bars, not primarily for drinking but to see if I can establish a rapport or some kind of fun connection with staff at these bars - or in the case of nightclubs, with other guests. It would be helpful if they didn't shut their doors just as I arrive. Full of food and sober as a judge.

First they were closed entirely. Which cost alot of jobs and led to alot of business closures. Bars, clubs and even restaurants. Couldn't even serve beer. Five star hotels could not serve booze.

It does not need RICH tourists - it needs ANY tourists currently !!!

  • In a way I want them to fail in every way it's possible to fail, maybe that will teach the electorate.

This Junta has been trying to remake Thailand ever since the took over the government by force.

People in the tourism industry have been amazed how quickly they have ruined it.

So many inane rules and maneuvers that befuddle even the most blinded supporters of this Junta regime.

Didn't they try that at Khao San Road? What happened there once they moved the stalls and brought it "upmarket"?

Honestly, looks very sterile.

Any street USA.

Unless of course they own the Sois and looking forward to doubling the rents of the premises as trade returns.

Last evening at about 1930 I walked up Soi 4 toward Sukhumvit. A guy came waddling out of Bangcockney, walked across Soi 6 where it meets Soi 4, pulled it out and began relieving himself on the outer wall of the Novotel. A service woman from the bar ran out and tried pulling the guy away from the wall, his trickle flying every which way. He began screaming incoherently at the woman.

Again, this was at 1930. I can only imagine what biological function he's dropping at 4am.

I'm just going to go out on a limb and guess that guy isn't the 'quality tourist' TAT had hoped to get.

You will always find drunken idiots in entertainment areas.

Just a shame that Thailand doesn't have a police force to ensure a semblance of order.

By 2am I pretty much don't care, EVERYONE is beautiful.

Even Lola.

Every hole is a goal, just need to make sure Lola leaves before morning.... Watching another  man take a sht and shave his face is not high on my bucket list.

But watching a woman take a sht and shave is about halfway up on that list? ????

in a plan designed to increase tourism earnings and attract more western travellers from the country’s key foreign tourist markets.

Ought to target Germans who otherwise this winter are going to be desperately looking for firewood to keep warm.

The Thais have always wanted 'upmarket' visitors ie people with plenty of money who know how to behave. Their intentions have, however, not been realized ever since cheap flights became available some years ago.

Late 80s  I was drinking until about 0200hrs went out about 2000hrs

Now days out at about 2000hrs  in bed by 2300hrs

Need my beauty ????

I hate to put a damper of their enthusiasm, but in Europe there is a cost of living issue, a war in Ukraine which is impacting the world directly or indirectly. Tourism is not high on the list when family's are struggling.

A little consistency would be nice.

I think I read a couple of times they want high-class tourists.

Do they get more of those high-class tourists by allowing certain drugs and opening the bars until 4am?

IMHO lots of people in bars are drunk before 2am. After that they just get more drunk. Obviously, some people want that. And looking at some creatures at 6:30am, when I sometimes ride to the fresh market, they also succeed now to drink more and more and more. In general, I don't think that is good for Thailand.

I remember when Pattaya was open 24/7 and devoid of probems because of it. While many bars did close sometime early hours, between Marine disco and another nearby it was possible to party till after dawn, and there were always some drinkers in a bar on the way back to hotel.

Couple of gogos in Nana in the 90s were open till after dawn. I never lasted till closing as needed some sleep before they opened about 6 pm ( or perhaps 8 pm- getting forgetful ).

Those were happier days than in this century.

It's not as though there wasn't all night opening back in the 90s. Worked well enough then.

Yes, it will! It will also end up with more restrictions on your happy life in Thailand. You still want them to fail in every way possible?

Yes

Nothing they do will affect me in any way.

Junta regimes are never good for tourism.  Look what  happened to Myanmar and that happened practically overnight., It’s not 1950. Today everything that happens in these undemocratic countries is on all the internet , TV , newspapers , throughout the world. Everything these so called leaders do is well published, Google is your friend. Some would be surprised at what you can find out.

If only Thailand was a high class destination!

The authorities within Thailand are living in a state of delusion. You don't just create an upmarket destination, purely as a result of wishful thinking. There are a dozen valid reasons why most wealthy tourists AVOID Thailand. No discussion of the sacrifices needed to attract wealthy tourists. No discussion of lowering luxury taxes, improving transport options, or increasing public safety.

These bottom of the barrel guys like Phiphat and Anutin are living in a parallel universe. Their wealth seems to prevent them from having anything even approaching a clear vision. They are suffering from total delusion.

Most people come to Thailand due to the economics. If it gets expensive enough, it ceases to appeal to the vast majority of tourists. Thailand is not Monte Carlo and it will never be an upscale destination. Never.

Thailand is not "upmarket" (whatever that means). Never has been, never can be. And that's all there is to it.

with reference to late night opening. I can member getting on my bike after leaving the bars at 2 or 2.30 and going to Tesco for some late night shopping.

Can hardly attain an upmarket pursuit when the overwhelming percentage of tourists are of a low-class character.

Just an observation.

The majority of tourists would not be out in a bar/club/pub at midnight let alone 4am.
