What Would You Do If You Had More Money

Really couldnt say, now im in a common mode. Would a lot of money effect me then? Would take some time then or not? Sometimes i think about that, would it change me "negative".

Saw docu on tv from UK lottery winners, they blew their money in no time to nothing, really amazing. You also see celebrities blowing their money in things, i think, <deleted> you need that? A shopping with Michael Jackson, wow insane.

See a Jeff Bezos buying a yacht, specially made (they mostly are), and probably will use once in a while. But will he built houses for poor people, to give it away? Guess not. So mentality also changes?

Also red  rare stories about people living in the street and being millionaire.

It would be handy more money, but wouldnt know what to do in first place. Just leave it and later think about what it is and what to do.

Money its a drag.

I think it's best to change little, and slowly over time. I.e. move to a new big villa on the beach with a new girl is, IMHO, a bad idea. I think it's good to keep the same lifestyle and imp

On second thought, maybe I would buy a bar in Nana, look for the best girls in all the other bars and pay them double to dance in my place.

Then maybe new uniforms every day or something like the Thai version of Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. I am sure something would come to my mind. ????

Health is indeed the most important thing. If I'm healthy I can make money . All the money in the world won't help if you live with disability or pain

To those who say "money can't buy happiness"

I would say, "you just don't know where to shop"!

Unless it's a huge amount of money I don't think my life would change very much.  Maybe upgrade a bit here and there.  I did inherit some money last year.  Invested half of it in stocks and banked the other half while I think about what to do with it.  My parents were conservative with money--likely why I inherited some--and I guess that rubbed off on me.

If it's enough to pay off the mortgage - Retire earlier. (I currently intend to retire when my mortgage is paid off - as I have enough in my pension  already to retire once the mortgage stops needing to be paid),

If it's a little more than that - fly business class rather than economy

If it's more than that, buy my kids their own places.

After that - you're into splurge money. First class on the plane, 5 star hotels, Travel the world rather than just living in my current houses. Get a private pilots licence and my own plane.

I wouldn't buy another chopper and I only visit the islands with it, don't want to buy any of the islands even if I could.

Also @transam borrows my chopper and brings it back empty.

Indeed, one motto of an educational venture that I established yonks ago is "A little extra goes a long way".  For example, the full-colour, illustrated bilingual (English/Burmese) story books that I buy for school kids in Myanmar cost a mere $1 USD each! The local translation of the English language science text books that are used by high school grades at government schools cost just $3 USD (500 pages seemingly written on rice paper!).  It's a very small amount, but can make a big difference to someone's life.

I personally don't have many material goods.  No house, no car, no motorbike, no savings, no share portfolio, no rich uncle etc - just my computer and ham radio gear.  Were I to receive a windfall or increase in my monthly income, I wouldn't spend it on myself, because I'm very with what I have already ????

Not counting all the personal drama you went through, are you happier now, or during the happy times when you were a hotel owner?

An extra 20K baht?  That's like US$500.

I don't think I'd do anything different with it if I left it in the bank.

But if I just started carrying 20K baht more in my pocket, I'm sure it'd just disappear every month without me knowing where it went.

I would buy back the house i sold 4 years ago and move back to Thailand.

The biggest mistake of my life and i have regretted it ever since.

Never leave. ☹️

There were a number of smallish but coinciding factors that happened which caused me to leave, it was a combination of...

The 7 year itch.

Spending 5 weeks back there in the summer of 2018 where the weather was hot and sunny every day, very rare in the UK, also the world cup was on and England were doing well, there was a good positive feeling in the country because of a combination of those two things and i had a fantastic 5 weeks.

A failed relationship with a Thai.

My job was stifling me a bit.

It wasn't a 100% "i have to leave" certainty decision, it was probably 60-40ish so i knew it would be tough and i would miss certain parts of my Thai life.

What i didn't realize at the time was just how much i had changed and grown by living in Thailand for 7 years, after being back for a few months the honeymoon period started to wear off, by six months i thought i may have made a mistake, by a year i was certain.

I had some bad luck/timing financially due to the pandemic and lost a big chunk of the house money.

The amazing things about living in Thailand had just become normal to me so i took them for granted, the terrible things about living in the UK had been forgotten about.

I take full responsibility for all my decisions but honestly if i could turn back the clock four years and have a word with myself i would in a heartbeat.

Im lucky in that I have a well paying job but when I started it, it certainly wasn't. I did it for the lifestyle the freedom and the time off.

Having said that money has never been important to me. I grew up really poor (1st world poor not rural Thailand poor)

So I have always been frugal. If I had 20 dollars a week or could live on that if I had 200 I would live on that.

My only concern money wise now is to ensure my daughters get the best education they can. I honestly want for nothing.

The comparison I would make is that some of my in laws are subsistence farmers they have a roof over their head, food in their bellies and not much else yet the are some of the most content, happiest, generous people I have ever encountered.

What Would You Do If You Had More Money

After the obvious splurge and barring traveling more, not a huge amount. Money is just a means to an end and helps remove the angst of not having any.

You know now, but always best to avoid moving anywhere based on a holiday. Holiday mode never lasts.

I still feel like holiday in Thailand.

Or in other words: I never was on holiday since I live in Thailand.

Much happier now!  Much, much less stress to deal with (no greedy wives, no fussy customers, no dealing with useless maintenance workers etc).  I walked away from all that stress years ago. Now I do everything on my terms and spend my income how I want (my ex-families hate me!)

Is there a point when you feel you have reached a nirvana in your life with the amount of money you have each month

Yes reached it quite a few years ago & it is probably quite paltry compared to what most want

Funny I was cycling down the road in beautiful countryside & wondered what would I do if I was rich /had a million etc?

I said it out loud...I would do this!

It was at that moment I realized I was already rich & had what I needed ????

That aside when I was younger I was a Sys admin & on a executive committee at the company I was working for.

The owners took a liking to me & treated me well & I got to know them very well.

I saw first hand what big money did to folks & it was not pretty...at all

They raised a bunch of useless spoiled kids who as adults were quite useless & were never really happy... not any of them

Many rich folks never get any rest for fear of who might be  trying to take it from them.

They own so much that in reality it all owns them

So yeah nah I'm good ????

That's silly.   Just buy a new one.

I would pay that fee the Russian Billionaire wanted when I accidentally landed my helicopter on his yacht instead of mine.

I have a reasonable degree of wealth and as a wise and loved mentor of mine told me many years ago (he's a savvy and well off and [once] hard working man) ... "Money does not make you happy Phil, it does however make you busier."

I spend and enjoy my money (and share it with others).

I know what it is to live from pay-check to pay-check, with zero security, and I thoroughly enjoy not having to worry about that anymore.

I have kicked the brainwashing of Calvinistic self-denial and penal attitudes of rigid frugality to the kerb.

When I first came to Thailand in 84, I traveled everywhere, plus Hong Kong and Malaysia. Not a backpacker tho, we stayed in hotels and ate out. Later, when I returned every winter for 4/5 months after paying the condo etc and wanting to stay as long as I could , it was a very * reasonable * life under the coconut trees ,swimming and having wonderful Thai friends . Never had spare money for fancy ice-creams or wine or taxis, but I had the best time of my life . It’s nice having lots of money but doesn’t make you happier inside.

( ps, if I won the loto I would go around the world very very slowly !)
