Samui Island –A Norwegian man was arrested on Samui Island in Surat Thani for 15 days of overstaying his legal visa conditions.

Surat Thani Immigration officers told the Phuket Express that yesterday (December 10th) they have arrested Mr. Jan Banan Thalmann, 43, a Norwegian national at a house in the Mae Nam sub-district, Samui district.

He is now at 15 days of overstaying his visa according to police. He was taken to the Koh Samui Police Station to face overstaying charges. It was unclear why Mr. Thalmann had overstayed his visa.

  • Well because these so called 'quality tourists' believe that law doesnt apply to them. Deport and ban and clean Thailand of these law breaking 'dirty falangs'.

  • Crime of the century. Next up -- jaywalking busts.

  • Give it a few weeks and I'll bet they will be waiting outside hotels for tourists on a one day overstay before they get a chance to go to immigration and extend.

Alas, he did not say I love Thailand and its temples, and foods. Its culture and the sunshine and Thai people. I really could not leave the land of smile and its lure of brothels splendidly masquerading as bars.

I know in some cases they (those who are on overstay) manage to attract police to do a investigation and they find they are on overstay. There is a reason why they are on overstay, so,,,,,,,,,,

You know those little electronic buzzer units they use at Pizza Company, it flashes and makes a noise when your order is ready? They could put straps on them and tie them to foreigners ankles at the airport when they arrive. pre programmed to go off 24 hours before the visa expires. If they could rig them to give out an electric shock too, that would be just perfect. And if Immi doesn't enter the visa renewal code into the device or it is removed by them and deactivated, it self destructs and takes of the visitors leg, overstayers would be far easier to spot then.

you're really equating overstaying on a government issued visa and jaywalking ? totally see how you made that connection.

Only 15 days?

Hardly seems fair.

And they could offer discounts on pizza too.

hmmm, how is this possible, I was thinking they finished the overstay search 2 days ago!

This would mean they do some extra work now...

his nom is Banan? Jan Banan sounds like a curse )

It would be more financially sound to fine him 20,000 baht than to go to the expenditure of locking him up and giving him free B&B then giving him 7 days notice to leave the country

We got back to pre-Covid feelings of hunting the farang!   Overstaying is bad, some of us have done it on accident….. but arrested and in the news is another thing.    100000000 negative farang stories to one positive.  I give Thai people free stuff all the time, used clothes.   Talk about me!   Work permit to do that?  Oh…no….arrested!   Lol

Next thing we'll read, is 10 years IDC detention for being 10 minutes late at the airport.

But I am thankful for Aseannow to advertise all these cases, which and hope will make their way into western media. It'll teach them

For your information. 15 days or 2146 days, does not matter regarding breaking the immigration law or not. It only carries different penalties. And, it´s very good that they put only 15 days out in the news. That might send a clear message that you should not come to Thailand, overstay and take it all for granted.

Anyone know what happens to him now? Detention? Where?

Most probable situation! IDC! Krung Thep (BKK)

After 7-14 days in a small cell at a Samui Police Station.

With 1.5 million posts what can you expect? Probably has an EXACT number of days that would be considered ok and I'm sure will let the forum know sometime. Ad nausea.

You really shouldn't give them ideas?????

Its to lull everyone into a false sense of security, then they start raiding the venues again?????

Okay, search is over, back to normal ????

They should give amnesty to everyone who have overstayed and give them a chance to either leave or make legal stay.

Anyway, I guess they check anyone who stands out for a reason.

It's a joke name, like a children's book character.

Banan is banana in Scandinavia.

A friend of mine knows who he is, and his real name is stated there.

Unnecessary unfortunate start on his plan to migrate here. He believes he got deleted over by an agent who offered long stay visa to him.

The point Jing was making was rather obvious... the Police are cracking down on seemingly extremely minor and indiscriminate issues...

There is suddenly a wave of reports of foreigners on overstay getting caught. Of course, they shouldn’t be overstaying, but neither is it a ’throw away the key’ type of crime some on this forum seem to think it is.

I wonder how this ’targeting’ of foreigners is carried out or if it is impacting regular tourists.

Are all tourist assumed to be guilty of overstay, stopped by the Police and have to prove otherwise [that they are not overstaying] ???.... OR, are these people who are caught for overstaying initially stopped and caught for some other reason then their overstay status is discovered ???
