Being a realist

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Recently in my work I was called up to the HR Department and given a written warning on my behaviour to a Supervisor.

He is a 80yo man who still works ,he walks slow hands behind his back maybe for balance reasons I don't know  etc and I don't like him.

He commented in front of me to another employee that he was saving his 2023 annual leave for 2024 as him and his wife (Filipino) wanted to go back to Phillipines in 2024 for 3 months

So ....I told him...."mate your nearly 81 everyday is a blessing you wake up ...how do you know your going to be here in 2024 ,F F sake take your annual leave this year !!!!

The point I'm trying to make is we need to be realists when it comes to life

Are you a realist ?

How do you define a realist?

What's the opposite a realist ?

Have you had any realist examples?

A bit rude. You don't get away with that type of thing at a big government department where I work or a hospital like you. Unless he's a good friend.

He might keep working because he likes it, because it helps him feel  younger and to support his family, because he is bored at the idea of too many free hours, or because he feels insecure or with limited self worth at the thought of retirement. That's his reality and working in Australia ain't so bad.

With the term mate I guess your Australian.

Really, what has it got to do with you about the man In question who happens to be eighty one years of age and continues working .

Also I can assume you knew of the man before you accepted the position .

Listen to the warning you have had or search for new employment.

Good luck

Your conflating two issues in your post.

Your experience at work.

Why would an 81 year old man delay gratification?

On the second, some people seem to run that programme no matter what.

It could also be said that the defeatist attitude that ‘why bother, I may not be around by then’ is also extremely negative and depressing.

But ultimately, who cares how others plan their immediate future - its seems you bother too much about other people and have failed to look inwards at your own attitudes.

Last thing old people want to here is that that they are and nearing death, you will realise that when you get to that age that is if you get.

There is some value to living in the moment. Few of us know when we will pop off and we could leave any amount of unfini

Are those the reasons you don't like him or are there some possibly valid ones too?

For some people, their job is their life. It may give them economic stability, social interaction, achievable challenges, etc. In other words - satisfaction.

The saying "different strokes for different folks."

Death is a sensitve topic

Even someone with 3 months to live from terminal sickness, a comment like that some people will be offended

A realist is able to look at a situation objectively and makes a point of trying to genuinely understand the situation that others may be in.

You have done neither. There is a phrase to describe your behaviour, but "being a realist" isn't it.

The fact that you even posted this, and that you were clearly expecting sympathetic responses, show that you are about as far from a realist as can be.

I am also a realist and I think you'll be fired soon

If you are a realist that is fine. Use it for yourself to make plans and accept reality.

But why do you behave like this to others? When you see someone in a wheelchair do you tell him: You are in a sad situation, you can't even walk? After all, it's the truth. Why don't you tell him?

Or imagine you are that person in the wheelchair and lots of others would tell you about reality.

He was diciplined by the HR dept about his behaviour, that might explain a lot.

Get real you young wipper snapper, he could be heathier than you, and will sure have more experience than you, you are a rude drongo, you just don't like him for whatever reason, surely not just he walks slow with his hands behind his back. Get REAL !

If you don't like him, why did you make a personal comment to him? I ignore people I don't like.

In any business with an HR department it behooves one to keep the personal comments to oneself.

Had I said what I thought about some senior management people in the last hospital I worked at, I'd have been fired long before I quit.

Indeed. We have a "realist" here who admits he doesn't like the person, and refuses to give a reason as to why, yet he doesn't seem to "realise" what's actually happened; he made a snidey comment to somebody he didn't like, and it backfired.

I'm almost certain he wasn't expecting the responses he got, which is strange for a realist ????

Yes...a realist. Naturalist. Lifelong atheist. Everyone is on that "death clock"...EVERYONE. Had 2 friends die at 23 and 24. Auto accident and cancer. Fave uncle died at 35...auto accident. Thai gf murdered 2 years ago at 32.

Lived my entire life to it's fullest. Never lived to work, but worked to live. Had an awesome 35 year career, which afforded me abundant travel around the world plus tons of time off. Retired at 59, despite still liking the job. Life is short...and for some much shorter...live it full. But not everyone is the same. For some it's work, kids, family, church. For me it was none of those things. More like booze, babes and rock-n-roll. Also nature and photography.

I hope you get the sack , and that the old guy goes on to live longer

than you ,you seem proud to come on here and state you berated

an old person, that for some reason you also hate ,maybe because

he's old.

One of my Dad's favorite expressions was, "We're all just penciled in."  None of us is inked in permanently, we can all be erased at any time, young or old.   He lived to 95 and was active right till the end. The 80-year old might outlive the OP; certainly likely to outlast him at work with the OP's poor attitude and, apparently even poorer work habits, being called in to HR.   I like the fact that the 80-year old is looking to the future, making future plans, and not thinking his life is over.   Bravo.  The OP could take a lesson.

"I'm just being real." A catch-all phrase used when somebody says something rude and gets called on it. Another is, "I'm just saying."

You appear to be a rude and intrusive loudmouth. I would suggest you take a good look at yourself, identify your faults, and thereafter try to behave better.

I'm not sure why someone would engage with someone they dislike in such a negative way.  If you already don't like them, chances are they don't particularly like you, so any kind of joke or criticism is not going to go over well.

I retired for the thilrd time at age 84. I would have continued to work because I like working, but I needed rotator cuff surgery, plus  cataract surgery in both eyes. Too much time off from work is not fair to employer, so I retired.  Was asked to go back but my wife asked me to stay home.  That was in October 2021.  Fortunately, I didn't  have any obnoxious, hateful people telling me what to do!
