Almost £42 for a quiche lorraine!

Featured Replies

Was browsing around Tops today. In a chilled cabinet, I saw they had several quiche cut into 6 pieces at THB 290 / slice. That's THB1,740 for a whole one, which equates to almost £42!!

I know prices have increased, but £42 for what is basically an egg and bacon pie!

Am I out of touch to be shocked at such a price?

  • If you find that 17 year old Brit kid in Pattaya and detain him, the family will give you enough money to buy 5 and 1/2 of them!!!

  • Quiche Lorraine is French. Therefore, by it's own definition it has to be posh.

Since  99% of Thais will not pay that much, they are taking the p!$$ out of the stupid farang who think would pay a ridiculous amount for a slice of egg/beacon/pastry   Yes, sheer madness.

'Egg and bacon pie' is what we often had for school dinners in the 1960s. "Not bacon and egg pie AGAIN!!" ???? Whoever would have thought that humble meal would morph into something so posh!

You could have bought a kilo of imported lamb for that price.

Buy eggs and bacon instead

And the pastry is not properly cooked. I am a regular at my Tops (FH), and they refunded me. Taste-wise it's very bland. Much better to make it yourself, and it's not difficult.

I fancy some quiche. Must try a you tube recipe when I have the time. How hard can it be ?

Versions differed from school to school, of course, but as a 60's schoolboy too, I might if I may, smugly boast that my school did the bacon & egg flan thing...but they mercifully raised its taste appeal by some considerable magnitude with the addition of a crusted cheese topping. Made all the difference. ????????

Why not buy a can of pledge and polish that off for only 8 quid ????

Big-C THB400 all in, get 6 slices, and the cooking instructions are in French, so "Creme de la Menthe" to quote D Trotter of Peckham.

Okay, admittedly it's frozen.

Well if you don't understand that buying anything by the slice is always considerably more expensive than buying a whole product then I guess... yes?

It's simple.

To make it even easier you could buy the base already made.

I know, absolutely shocking for the lower class, and in the end I had no room on the table for it so binned it.

One of the easiest things to make, and I also add leaks/Chinese onion as Makro call them.  Less milk and more egg to make it firmer.

Go to Big C Extra.....They sell ok sized Quiche (like) little pies in the Bakery....And 4 for about 180 baht.....

An important publication, a reference volume for my turbulent youth!

How big were the slices?

Yes seriously that is expensive, did you notice where they were imported from?

Imported foods in general do seem to have gone up considerably here, but 290 baht a slice is just ridiculous?

I bet about 80-90% of that Hi-so way over priced special deli food in the supermarkets gets binned.....I NEVER see anyone buying it.....
