20+ already arrested in purge of foreigner law-breakers in Phuket

Police in Phuket have arrested at least 16 people in what appears to be a crackdown on foreigners working illegally and/or overstaying their visas. The Phuket News reports that Phuket Provincial Police posted an announcement on their Facebook page, but didn’t give a reason for the sudden flurry of activity.

“Right now, in every area in Phuket, the police are taking offences committed by tourists seriously. We want the people of Phuket to trust us.”

The arrests are believed to be linked to the furore over Swiss expat Urs Fehr, who has been charged with assault after kicking a female doctor.

You have a loooooong way to go before that happens.

All this is just window dressing, business as usual next month.

And you wonder why it has become harder and harder to work with immigration on visas... a few bad apples are rotting the bunch... I hope that Thailand commits to rounding up all of them and send them packing or to prison.

How many more "Bad foreigner did this" stories does there have to be before they turn the land of smiles into the land of snarls then ?

I am sure that there are far worse incidents going unreported by locals on themselves but they are deemed too unworthy or unpalatable to be referred to.

Just a show for the media. If they can go and catch 20 + offenders in a few hours imagine how many they could catch if they did their job full time.

Great

Maybe as a next step they should taking offences committed by Thais, like taxi drivers, seriously. Maybe then the tourists would also trust the Phuket authorities.

There have been several stories of foreigners behaving badly in Phuket and immigration did broadcast their punch saying this is what they would do. I'm just shocked they actually followed through with it!

Bad guys?  I would say ANY Person who frequents a Bar where young girls are offering themselves for payment should be removed from the country ASAP. It is these people who are financing an illegal organization. without these PERVES sex trafficking and underage porn would die out. Plus, RAISE the age for a retirement visa to 65 as that is the age most people retire in their own countries.

I never understood one thing: why do they like to take pictures with the arrested person?
