Police in Chonburi arrested a 29-year-old Russian man, Mr. A (pseudonym), after discovering counterfeit euro notes in his possession. The man was staying at a hotel in the Phra Tamnak area when the incident unfolded.

The investigation began when a Thai man attempted to exchange a 500-euro note for Thai baht at a currency exchange booth. The staffer, suspecting foul play, used a chemical pen to verify the banknote's authenticity. Upon discovering it was fake, the staffer alerted local authorities.

Police traced the counterfeit note back to the Thai man, who worked as a receptionist at the hotel. According to his statement, the Russian guest, who had been staying at the hotel for three weeks without settling his bill, had given him the fake 500-euro note. The receptionist's attempt to exchange the note had inadvertently led to the police investigation.

Following this lead, police officers visited the Russian man's hotel room. There, they found six 500-euro notes and eighty 50-euro notes, all of which were counterfeit.

Upon questioning, the Russian man confessed that he had brought the fake banknotes into Thailand. He revealed that a friend in Istanbul had provided him with the counterfeit money, instructing him to spend it during his stay in Thailand.

This incident has raised concerns about the circulation of counterfeit currency and its implications on the Thai economy. Police are now investigating whether the suspect had managed to pass any of the fake money elsewhere and if there are others involved in this counterfeit operation.

The authorities are urging businesses to remain vigilant and report any suspicious currency to help prevent further occurrences. The detained Russian man now faces legal consequences under Thai law for circulating counterfeit currency and overstaying his visa.

Yeah, but why do they do such stupid things that are easily caught? Surely if you know you have counterfeit money you will not be putting yourself in a position that can be caught so easily like giving some to your hotel or using your passport at a currency exchange booth haha..

Not the brightest spark did he not think a 500 euro note would be checked? Not exactly the type of note you see everyday 🧐

Must be tough using a 500 Euro note, it is supposedly worth 19,000 baht isn't it.

I asked my partner to pop into a currency booth to exchange Baht to Euro. I forgot to tell her small notes !  She came back with 500, 100s and 50s notes. 100s and 50s where ok but I had a devil of a job to off load the 500.

500 notes are no longer printed apparently.

Why did they make 500 Euro notes. They are useless for normal exchange, just useful for scammers and crooks. Well i suppose that's most of the politicians in the EUSSR.

It's called foresight. In about 6 months you'll need EUR500 to buy a cup of coffee. :coffee1:

Before committing a crime foreigners should watch videos on YouTube about life in a Thai prison and at the Immigration Detention Centre all of which are earthly branches of Hell.

I hope that after a lengthy stay at the Bangkok Hilton he is deported and never allowed to return,,,it's high time they stopped these 6 month visas for these Russian criminals and deported them all as someone said earlier they have no means of staying here without committing crimes.

They have been doing it for years.  Undermine confidence in the monetary and financial systems to weaken an adversary.  Russia, China, North Korea and Iran have many individuals committing cyber attacks to shut down critical infrastructure and commit various financial scams.  Asymmetrical warfare is much cheaper than tanks, bombers and aircraft carriers.

I tried to change it at varies shops and supermarkets and even Banks. The Banks said that they  would take the Note but processing would take a week or two.

I finally managed to change it at a Post Office but only after some scrutiny by the staff.

I used to bring in £50 notes from my trips to the UK. Easier to carry, and a better rate. Had to check every single note for flaws, pencil marks, anything that would get them rejected by exchanges. The fetish of completely clean notes is, or was, staggering. Even a crease from a fold would be rejected. Banks in the UK were happy to change £10s and £20s. This changed later when the anti laundering laws were tightened. You had to deposit the money first, then withdraw it in the requested denomination.

555 I wonder why

On May 4, 2016, the Council of the European Central Bank decided that the 500 euro note would no longer be issued from the end of 2018. The 500 euro notes in circulation remain valid indefinitely and should remain legal tender. They have since been taken out of circulation because, in the opinion of central bankers, they are primarily used for illegal transactions.

Does Mr. A. look quite a bit older than 29? Perhaps not only his currency was fake?

Will he be paying his fine in Euros? 50s and 500s?
