  • Thailand aims to eradicate poverty in two years.....   .........and in two years my wife aims is to let me spend Saturday nights in Nana.

  • Can't help noticing in the photo that the PM looks serious but all the men round the table are laughing ... Perhaps that says it all.

Could be done if billionaire politicians like Thaksin shared some of their  personal ill gotten gains with the poor

Evry year a one time handout of 10k??? Raie the salaries to a decent level of 600 THB a day or even better change from day wages to monthly salaries.... 15K a month for a 6 day working week all extra days off included... That is 500 a day for a full month. No matter how days off there are and working hours not more than 8 day. Far better than old fashion day wages.. And people can work on a daily base or parttime.. That is what in they do in the Western world too...There will be no problems..but keeping the people here poor is much worse by extra days off that don't need to be off ( substitute days)

Also while mentioniong western countries, one should remember that they have never been able to eradicate poverty either!  Just keep throwing free money or benefits at them doesn't work!

A spokesman for TAT has confirmed up to 7 million Thai Citizens will be better off in 2 Years he confirmed.

That would be great but ...

Very difficult if not impossible due to high household debt.

  • Thailand's average household debt has reached a record high due to slow economic growth, lower incomes and high living costs, and people are having trouble servicing their loans
  • the country's household debt is16.4 trillion baht ($484 billion), or 90.8% of gross domestic product (GDP) at the end of March 2024, among the highest in Asia.
  • And not improving. Average household debt up 8.4% this year.

If the government doesn't understand all facets of a problem, it cannot solve the problem.

I have two brother in laws who live 30 kms from Korat, it's a rather primitive area to say the least. They go to work daily, they don't have regular jobs but there's plenty of casual work if guys get of their bums and go to work instead of gambling and boozing all day.

Yes, same here in south Surin and throughout most of Thailand. Millions of Thai citizens, every day. But a half-day here and a 2-hours there and a whole day somewhere else followed by a week with nothing does not equal an exit from poverty. It's not called the 'informal economy' for nothing. Doesn't form part of the bureaucrats' stats and therefore of the politicians' considerations.

And poverty is not just 'external' (as in observable). It's also in the mind. When you grew up with not-enough-food, no education worth having, illiterate, no experience of anything more than 20 kms away ... I have BILs too frightened to enter a shop on their own, never been inside a supermarket, wife has to escort to government buildings because cannot face the desk workers on their own ... One BIL in his late 30s has never bought clothes for himself; dressed entirely in hand-me-downs including from me.

And so it goes ... But never mind. The PM will have it all fixed within 2 years.

The wife picked mushrooms yesterday and sold them for 400 baht, bless her.

You cannot eradicate poverty with a madly high baht - no exports , no tourism, no filtering down

If the Shinawatra family donated, say, 80% of its wealth directly to the poor it would be a good start.

And when that happens, the poor can begin raising flying pigs... lol.

If they could achieve that, then hat off, aw some.

Western and other countries could learn then, as they dont achieve a thing, only making it worse.

GO for it Thailand !

And I smell a scam in there somewhere. Is this the big one?

When it is to good to be true it is called a scam.

As long as brains can be shaped by other things than poverty hope exists.

Even if they manage the latter, I doubt the former will ever happen, by design.

You want to eradicate poverty? Massive spending on education, and start hiring foreign English speaking teachers.

Impossible, the country hasn't the resources certainly not within 2 years.

If the Army Muppets take over again it will be another lost decade.

This is 1 key thing required, apart from elimination  of corruption.

Snowballs chance in Hell. Ever. :coffee1:

So, first question: How do they define 'poverty'? Just to ensure that no worker is paid less than the regulation 350฿ per day (soon to be 380 wow!) would be a mammoth decade-long task, I shouldn't wonder.

Governments - and Prime Ministers! - that make announcements like that are either mind-bogglingly stupid and ignorant, or they assume their audience is. Worthy of Trump.

NO, I think she is going to be the Asian salad lady.  Make grandiose statements but not have a plan to do it.

Raising min wage is not gong to do it if it did then LALA land would be the most prosperous in the world. 20/hr Rotten Ronnie

Yeah, the 30 baht per day wage hike is going to do the job. Nice work, young woman. You have been so impressive.

maybe she's saying ???  ok guys..  keep up the good work,,  it may take 2 more years until we starve them all out of existance

Often a country is considered rich by how the old people are cared for .

With pension payments of 600 baht a month here in Thailand you could say it will be 20 years minimum before the country can be considered rich and free of poverty.
