This is the least hot Songkran I ever remember......And a bit rainy too...

Featured Replies

Yep. we're in Korat, we've had a few hot days but nothing like past years, and most days have been pleasant and mild. We're now halfway through April, so lets hope it continues.

And then there are still people who will deny Global warming 😂

More like an ice age approaching,

Then we'll be ordered to burn as much fossil fuel as possible.

And move to the coasts 'cos of the glaciers forming in the mountains.

Last night's rain in Bangkok (15th) was phenomenal for this time of year. It was a lightning and thunder show that was sustained for at least 20 minutes (heavy). I've never seen a Bangkok deluge like that in April - it was like October. Flooded streets, some localized power cuts,

The deluges  this year have been the most intense I have seen  for this time of year. I wonder if we are in for a brutal rainy season.

Climate change warning!

We have stopped burning coal in the uk so this must be a cause of cooling temperatures in Thailand!

In my part of the country it used to be basically dry from November-May, bar a very few light afternoon showers in Feb/Mar, becoming a bit more frequent in April but never long-lived. Blue skies most of the time and very hot from March-June.

In recent years we have had some rain in all months of the year and particularly more from February to April, which has resulted in lower temps then and a markedly cooler "hot" season, with only a few really hot days, as well as reduced humidity. This year we've had more "early" rain than I can remember, although it has been trending this way for a few years. Last year, the "hot season here started late and was very short. The main effect of this seems to be lower precipitation through the main rainy (SW Monsoon)  season, which can be a problem for water storage and farmers.

So, the term "climate change" rather than "global warming" seems more usable here, where the average annual temperature is decreasing.

Sorry, you don't understand the phrase😕

Sorry, you don't understand the meaning of this phrase😳

The usual tourist trope websites claim 'rainy season' in Thailand is May - October. In fact we, all know each region of the country can have variations - like the south (Phuket, Samui and even Koh Chang during December peak season where it can rain heavy at times in December).

But even Bangkok has seen rain and high humidity continuing on into 2nd week of December during last 5-10 years. It used to stop in first week of November 20 years ago - but not any more.

It seems that you don't understand the phrase.  If you use "old White man" as an insult, it suggests that these things, alone or in combination, are negative.  That's how insults work.

So, what's wrong with being a White man, old or otherwise?

The May - October reference is to the SW Monsoon, which is still the main source of rain to the majority of the country.

having spent more than 30 years in Thailand, I notice for sure a big change in the weather.  Yeah still 3 seasons of Hot, rains some years wet some years or areas dry.  SUmmer storms getting more violent and hail growing larger almost every year.  Winds growing stronger with even one report of a tornado.  every month the international organizations report a record heat for that month.  There are regular reports now of 1000-year rains in a short period of time making for record flood.  These are all symptoms of global warming for sure as the weather is noticiably changing.

People always think this is the worst year ever for anything. Unless I wrote it down I wouldn't trust my memory over that span of time. Ever heard of the "mandela effect" where people imagine false memories and swear on their life it's true? Millions of people have shared memories of things they vividly remember but are false.

Agree that the use of  "climate change" rather than "global warming" is more appropriate and better describes what's going on.

I was in Pattaya from Feb to April and don't recall as much rain in previous Feb/Mar as there was this year.

Also, when I returned to UK, the temperatures were more akin to May or June than April.

Anyone who denies the existence of climate change is really not paying attention!

This is a cyclical weather pattern that will swing back next year not a long term trend.  Are you thinking this is the new normal for April weather?

Not as such - it may indeed (or may not) swing back next year, but you and I won't know until then.

The point I was making was that weather patterns around the globe are changing - much of that change is unpredictable.

Hence my comment about deniers not paying attention.

suggest you check out some the reports on this forum over the recent past as they have been quoting the weather people about the hottest year and hotest month every month this year too.

When we evacuated to kanchanburi during the super flood in BKK (2011), during an afternoon summer storm, I noticed small hail and all the Thais laughed saying it was too hot for ice to fall, just like it never snows here.  I mangaged to snag some of the hail and showed them that it was ice but none of them had ever sen it before.  Now it is a daily occurrnce duiring the summer stor,m sn last month one news clip showed a home owner picking up a golfball size hairstone!  just saying that the weather is changing worldwide whether you can see it or not.

PLEASE, Can we try that again as I did not see all three listed!

Older than you are probably as my first Thai teacher over 50 years ago said that Thailand has three seasons, Hot, Hotter and Hotest.

I deny that it's caused by humans, or can be modified by humans.

IMO It's caused partly by nature (consider the Ice Ages millennia ago) and partly by humans (consider the effects of such things as CFCs on the Ozone layer).

BUT...humans are exacerbating what nature does, thereby modifying the effects, so from that perspective I disagree with you.

Its the EV cars that are causing climate change.....Nature needs petrol cars putting out carbon to stay in balance....Forget nuclear power we need coal burning plants to make electricity....Lots of them....Plants need carbon for food and make oxygen....So coal will feed the plants....And stop climate change.

If it is making Thailand cooler in April, and the UK sunnier and warmer in Spring, I am all for it!

Folks This is global cooling......I expect to go ice skating on the local lakes shortly...And I would not be surprised to see Polar bears roaming beach road soon...

This is happening because of the selfish EV drivers are not dong their fair share to warm the planet.....EV  drivers besides being fruity are going to cause us all to freeze to death.

Wait!  Are back in the 1970's again?

"According to scientists reporting to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (1974), 22 of 27 forecasting methods predicted a cooling trend for the next 25 years, and “meteorological experts” were thinking an 1800s climate was around the corner, with the concomitant return to monsoon failures, shorter growing seasons, and “violent weather”."
