I’ve been driving to Bangkok hospital a lot lately and there is a check point at Chillva Market. They pull over all motor bikes.  Plenty of Thais, Burmese and foreigners.  No discrimination. At least what I see. I’m in a car though.

Even at Chalong it's not all foreigners, at night time I know a Thai guy got stopped in his car and breathalyzed,

At last a good news : only 2261 Thai nationals were driving without a licence in Phuket. And all of them were wearing helmets. Well done BIB !

  • In advanced countries, tourists without a license would be turned away when they even tried to rent one.   TBH, I have some sympathy for tourists who figure it must be legal since the rental

  • Fines should be handed out  to all the motor cycle rental companies. Who have enabled this to happen in the first place. But we all know. T.I.T.

You have to wonder how long it took to get that photo......three motorbikes, five people........ and all wearing helmets.

That did not last very long, after all, they were all tourists, who do think twice, unlike our hosts/women

What was the revenue obtained from all these fines? I assume that this is the point of the exercise, afterall. It's nothign to do with safety - otherwise, rental companies would also be fined for renting to unlicenced drivers (most certainly don't have a bike licence).

Yesterday Pattaya Tai 2nd rd intersection, the usual fat traffic police guy stopping only foreigners. Thais with no helmet 3 up etc and he never stopped a single Thai.

Not sure if it's the same guy but if it is, I am surprised?  Normally the tired fecker struggles to walk from the Soi 9 station to the other side of the crossing on Beach Road!

If they're focusing on tourists, the police should be holding the rental companies responsible. Insist that all rental agreements carry a copy of the driving licence of the holder.

I agree tourists need to be caught because they can be very irresponsible, and very ignorant of the road rules and even riding the motorbikes. Put tourists are a temporary hazard. They come and go. The police should be focusing more on the Thai riders and the Thai rental companies.

Once again they're focusing on a short-term solution instead of a final solution.

No valid licence equals no insurance. So most certainly rental companies should not be renting to people without a valid licence.

The trouble is, it’s not just pukka rental companies that rent motorbikes. Virtually every massage shop near me seems to have a fleet of them, plus every tom dick and harry seems able to access at least one to rent out.

It's not unreasonable to request that people have an international driver's license at a minimum, when you're going overseas and you know you're going to be driving that's the least amount of preparation that you can engage in.

What about all the unlicensed school kids?  They start riding these things to school from about 10 years old ... that's something that needs cleaning up ...

Naah.. low "collection" potential.

I am wondering when the RTP is going to fine the 2 kids of 13 yr old racing in our soi, with no helmets, no driverslicense and tje many kids on a motorcycle with no helmets an drivers licenses too who are driving every day to school. But the are Thai so that is no problem. Today is the cremation of a kid who died on a motorcycle without helmet and license only 14years old.

Had three die last year on our road into town, all early teens.

It'll be around the 12th of never when they decide to do something.

17000 fines ... 2000 are maybe for the revenue the other 15.000 disappeared in the pockets of the Rtp

Is it the law they must do that?

It should be... no licence no rental vehicle

True....but they are never going to do anything that limits their income........unless of course the penalties are severe.

" International Driving licence " 😂 The new Frontier 😂 as most Foreigner learned the lesson of Helmets now they got to learn that Driving in Thailand needs a International Driving licence . Best is when you get stopped and you see the officers face when displaying a Thai Driving licence and specifically for Motorbikes 😂

True, let the rentals hire-out their vehicles, then fine the unsuspecting tourists..

good scam

I have Thai licences for  bike and car, both of which, of course, have to be renewed. But I also have an “inter” licence valid for 20years.

Should cover the rest of my driving/riding life, I’m already 68 😂

pattaya city.. got pulled over, expired license.. 400 baht fine.. pay on the spot..and I drive away.. no issues .. at leaset 10 Thais no helmets drive by while BiB is checking my license and me paying...other cops available but nothing happens to helmet-less Thais......

So how many Thais were fined for no license or helmet , especially children and you can bet not one rental company was fined for renting them out to people without a licence. 🙄

...That'll Bring Them In Droves... (?)

...As For Thais... (?)

Well they have the numbers for people riding that were fined so where are the numbers for the companies ?

Or maybe they just ain't that interested in that as it involves going around doing work 😄

Are you illiterate? "We're not only fining offenders but also targeting those who rent vehicles to unlicensed drivers."

I don’t think it’s a question of literacy. More that most people suspect that the police will not bother to chase down those who rent bikes to people who don’t have valid licenses.

Promises to “target” suggest a possibility in the future and jar with the very specific numbers of people fined.

The realists among us might say “ why haven’t they got specific numbers on rental operators renting to unlicensed drivers/riders.”

The cynical among us might say that they won’t actually target the rental operators because it will cut off a very large source of fine income. Which is exactly what the poster to whom you responded, said.

Quite obviously it is clear now, why the BiB just LOVE being assigned to Phuket. The official figure is 2,261 which is possibly less than 10% while the 17,705 is possibly 98%. The missing percentage went into lining pockets left, right and centre 8-)

Keep up the good work

........a problem persisting despite prior efforts.

I must have missed those.

17,000?

I don't buy that for a nanosecond. That means 80 tickets per day, every day. The BiB don't have that much energy. Are they writing tickets? Obviously, but they really should report a more believable number.

Includes 'fines' without receipt? Anyway those surprisingly create energy...

Phuket, a favoured destination for travellers from Russia, China, and Europe, continues to grapple with reckless tourist driving.

Having no license doesn't go hand in hand with reckless driving and it's a bit of a cheek Thais talking about reckless driving.  If it's reckless driving then why aren't they charging them with that offence?  And I'm not saying no foreigners drive recklessly far from it but I'd guarantee that they're more Thais guilty of that offence than foreigners

I wonder if a foreigner or even Thai has ever been stopped and actually had every document and let go, to go about their day?    I always think if they stop you they will do you for something as i expect to them it will be loss of face.  They can just say reckless driving even if you was driving perfectly safe.  One poster on here said they charged his friend for having the foot rests down.   I expect there might be a few on here who have been allowed to go about their day if they had all documents but i think it would be in the minority.  Because they can always pull out the 'no passport on their person' offence on the driver they have stopped.

Actually fining and vague "targeting" being completely different beasts......

Easy to stop at source -  have the rental people fined for allowing renting without license

Exactly, and fine the unlicensed, no helmet foreign brigade too. They wouldn’t do it in their own country, why throw all rules away when coming to Thailand. The land of a free for all .

Great, let us spread the effort to other tourist hot spots.

Then, why not concentrate on all the illegal Thai drivers - under-aged, no license, etc. - and the masses not wearing helmets.

With a little more effort, the Thai police could aid the Thai economy and boost government income at least 500%.
