I know you are solidly in the school of thought that the "correct" usage of the term "farang" should be reserved exclusively for white people, but the fact is that many, many Thais commonly use this term very loosely to refer to pretty much any non-Asian foreigner

Never met one of them, they're not afraid to call a kairk a kairk.

They all know the phrase, "If you meet a snake and a Indian, strike the Indian first"

Openly showing what this government thinks of us.

  • So much wrong with what just came out of this little man's mouth. That was extremely racist and xenophobic. Very ugly to see a person of his stature in the government talking like this.    I

  • So can we file defamation charges against him now or does it only work the other way around? ????‍♂️

That is exactly why I hate that word. It is usually always derogatory. But at this moment I have a few select ones for him, but I would be suspended another time if I did.

It is not the word farang or the tone, it is more that he prefixed it with "ai" which makes it really derogatory.

While the people who declined to accept the masks could well have been white, his use of the term "farang" cannot conclusively be interpreted to mean that his comments were directed exclusively at white people. Posters using his comments as proof of racial animosity towards whites (rather than Westerners in general) may find themselves on shaky evidentiary ground. But I appreciate that these rules of evidence may not be adhered to in TVF's high court of public opinion.

Well.. if you eliminate khon Jeen, khon Asia and khon Thai, not many choices left.

Not mentioning of course the very derogatory prefix, use of which has a high potential for violence in Thailand.

You forgot 'Gowlee' & 'Kairk'

Have they told anyone yet what to do if you have symptoms? not seen it yet. Stay in hotel room and die quietly?

there is also Yippon, plus I can also think of what some refer to black and brown people as and its not falang. I think its pretty safe to assume he meant white.

Facemasks are great, if they're N95, you only wear them once, you make sure they're airtight, you have eye protection, you follow the other advice on washing hands, not touching your face, etc.. I bought a couple in Pattaya (100bt each) and if I'm going into any prolonged exposure to potential risk situation I might wear one of them (i.e. queuing at immigration). For everyday use, forget it. As protection they're pretty useless. The one good thing they do is reduce the risk of other people spreading the infection.

Just to clarify, he absolutely does not use the word "man" to refer to Westerners in the press conference.

Does this not just emphasize the mentality of the ****ing morons who run this country!

In the past, I've heard English people referred

to as 'potato sacks'.

At a club in London, my mate asked me why

is that when I pass a group of Thai girls they

say 'Moo'?  I said its means 'handsome'.

Look at the facts. Most Farangs here do not use a mask. Don't ask me why. But if you know it please let me know the reason.

It has been pointed out to you numerous times! Are you just trying to get your post count up or are you so uneducated that you can't see the woods from the trees.

These masks provide little to no protection, and being handed it by hand from a guy that they don't know, seems the sensible and intelligent thing to do.

He is a politician and like every politician the world over, it is all for show with absolutely no substance,

Why can't you see that?

What the government thinks and says about white foreign tourists is rude.
I wear a mask - but not because the virus, because the super bad air. The minister should also use the rude words for people they burn fields and forests. It effects more people than the virus and is more dangerous.
But a real smart move of the minister: the Chinese are gone and now he offends all other foreigners.

This is a population that can't think beyond tomorrow, next week, or next month! and he is saying that foreigners don't care about the big picture!

Goodness, tomorrow is a foreign concept to them and their preparation skills are close to zero.

I note from the picture above, that this plonker, whilst making his racist speech about not wearing face masks is in fact wearing his under his chin, and if he has contracted the virus his saliva will be spraying all over the media he is addressing!!!!!

Also he is spraying his stupidity all over the media.

Ok good.

On one hand, they don't want to hurt Chinese tourists feelings and keep allowing them despite high risk for their health system.

On the other hand, they have that xenophobic attitude with farangs still staying in the country.

Well I am changing my travel plans, I will visit another country this year. With this anti-westerner attitude, they show they are just a bad copy of their new Chinese master. They should replace English with Chinese language in their schools too to be more polite to them. It is crazy to see Vietnam acting better towards westerners and not allowing Chinese visas despite being a communist country who got one of the biggest war in the 20st century.

Imagine the uproar if the health minister in the UK said 'chinks' refusing to wear face masks should be turfed out of the country

Just because there are more specific terms used to more specifically characterize people racially, does not mean that the term "farang" is not commonly used as a classifier for foreigners in general. I don't care whether you claim to have never met someone who uses farang to describe foreigners in general. I have seen this done countless times, enough to be confident that I know what I am talking about.

Your endless projection of British colonial era condescension towards Indians onto Thai people is equally tiresome. Indians are well-integrated into Thai culture and society, and I have never seen evidence that Thais harbor the type of distrust towards Indians encapsulated in that hackneyed expression. I would also like to remind you that Yinn (a Thai national forum member) has absolutely refuted this contention on multiple occasions.

After all, all who run the country cant be ****ing morons?

Generalising, is good? Are you sure?

Mr Anutin added that Asian tourists are all using the government issued facemasks but that Europeans are not - using a derogatory Thai tone when describing Europeans.

don't worry Mr. Anutin, soon there will be so few Europeans coming to Thailand that this will hardly matter anymore. Talk to your colleague the tourism minister.

The WHO writes "Not needed for general public WHO do not have respiratory symptoms".

That means if I don't have respiratory symptoms the general public without a mask doesn't have respiratory symptoms too. A very interesting hypothesis and extremely convincing.

I don't know if you are being deliberately obtuse, but in case you really don't understand: Unless you have respiratory symptoms or you are a health care worker or otherwise are providing care for symptomatic individuals, then you are an asymptomatic member of the general public and there is no need to wear a mask.

I think that he's just trying to drum up business for the government's sale of face masks at 5x the price that the Ministry of Public Health is selling them for; 2.5 baht vs 0.55 baht. Some spokesperson said that it just wasn't feasible to give them to everyone free, as that would be expensive. Submarines are not expensive, though. ????

I am curious as to why Westerners who decline to use a face mask and not non-Westerners, though. ????

He uses the derogatory "ai" (อ้าย) in conjunction with the term "farang." Kind of a shocking display of resentment towards Westerners. Nobody here knows the racial identity of who refused to take a mask, so nobody can absolutely conclude that his comments were directed at just white people, but the fact that he felt free to so openly voice to the media such hostility and resentment is disturbing. It also sends an unbelievably ill-advised message at a time when the tourism industry is already in free fall.

Amazing statements millions of thais without a useless face-masks Outside yet he spots a few farang tourists without wearing a mask and these need to be kicked out.

I understand. Normally you don't get anything for free from Thai people. For sure they were thinking that as soon as I unpack it I will have to buy it for a lot of money.
