Pattaya: "I'm not sick and it's my right not to wear a mask" - Thai man makes a video stand at market

A video of a furious Thai man at a Pattaya market has been widely viewed on social media.

Special services officials had to call the police after the man refused to leave the Na Klua New Market because he was not wearing a face mask.

The man had stood his ground and said that his rights were being impinged upon.

Thai media 77kaoded went to the market where they spoke with an official called Rattanasak who confirmed the case.

According to the official the man said: "I am not sick and it is my right not to wear a mask".

He only left the scene when police backup was called.

Thaivisa notes that while it is not illegal to be out without a face mask a condition of entry to places like markets is dependent on wearing a mask.

Yes, fully agree, curfews, lockdowns, beach ban, alcohol ban, it‘s really hard to come up with such stupid measures. But do not underestimate them, they managed to do it!    However, please don

No its not got plenty of foreign guys here finding ways not to use a mask and endanger others not input contact details as required. Saying the system is useless but at the same time worrying that its used to track them (how can a system be worthless on one side while work perfectly to track them)

Its a rule to wear masks at markets so just do it its not that hard to do.

He doesn't know he's not infected. Many cases have no symptoms. I guess he didn't get the memo. I'm somewhat impressed though to hear that he does understand that the point of everyone wearing masks is to protect others.

Yes, fully agree, curfews, lockdowns, beach ban, alcohol ban, it‘s really hard to come up with such stupid measures. But do not underestimate them, they managed to do it!

However, please don‘t be racist, there is no reason. Just look at the stupid nonsense Neil Fergusson (Professor Lockdown) came up with, flawed models, totally wrong coding, and so on.

On the other side look at this Thai, he understood that if he is not sick he cannot infect anyone, which is absolutely logic and indisputable correct.

So please do not engage in racism and Thai bashing.

Plenty of illogical and stubborn folks in every country/society.

Many in my western family abroad and amongst my old western work colleagues, and many in my Thai relatives and work colleagues in LOS.

Normal.

No.

It is not correct.

He may not feel sick.

But he still might be infected.

Which means he would then be infecting others.

Wearing a mask reduces the chances of that.

Legal or not, he has no moral or ethical "right" to do that.

Normal.

Thais in general are massively more advanced in their understanding of the need for mask wearing, then lets say Americans, the "exceptional" nation in the lead (Number One) in Covid-19 cases and deaths.

This should never be a political issue.

It's a freakin' public health issue.

Sure thing, Canuck.

Never mind that there is very strong scientific evidence by now that massive mask wearing is very effective in reducing the spread of the deadly virus.

Good on him I say

OK, but I hope he realizes that maybe he is infected but doesn't yet know that and he could infect  people.

Or the reverse, he might pick up the virus from a market worker or a shopper while he's in the confines of the market.

Who could disagree that prevention is critical and is not rocket science.

He claims he is not sick, which is not the same as not being infected, he appear not to understand that. Not peculiar to Thailand though.

Is this a defense of the Thai bashing which I criticized in my post? I don’t see the connection though. Please specify what this reply has to do with my post, the one you are quoting.

I agree. It astonishes me that some people believe that the mandatory wearing of face masks was implemented solely to protect themselves, and not the other members of the general public.

Imagine sneezing or coughing in a public place whilst not wearing a mask. Under the current climate you are liable to get lynched!

No. It is not a defense of Thai bashing. I regret if you took it that way. Cheers.

i'd like to see the video, was probably on yaba but not tested for it

If you would have read the original article then you would have noticed that the man never claimed that the masks where to protect himself, and he would refuse to protect himself.

As far as I am aware, in ChonBuri and this market is in Pattaya by order of the provincial governor it is mandatory to wear a mask. This has not been resinded.

The man is mentally unstable; after sixteen years of educational indoctrination, normal Thais do not stand up & rail against authority.

Now all the data is in society has got to realise that catching Chinese Flu isn't a death sentence by a long shot

At the moment the Thais treat it that way

If you told a Thai person you had it they probably wouldn't speak to you again

There is no absolutely concrete evidence that wearing a smelly old mask (and that is what most are wearing) has any effect whatsoever.

Hardly anybody wears a mask in Europe and it's almost sizzled out there now

People need to get a grip and move on with life

A society of people wearing masks & having no human contact all the time will fail

It's just not natural and I've become to hate seeing non communicative/non tactile robots everywhere

Where?

Any evidence would be based on fresh masks all the time, putting it on correctly, taking it off correctly

Not filthy old masks worn day after day

Taking them on and off with dirty hands

There are protocols in hospitals, that's why they work in that environment (sometimes!)

How did 100+ doctors die in Italy if they are so effective??

Mask became the burka of Thailand.

It would be more appropriate if the police force should be directed toward traffic safety.
