Ray's 22 Bar was the other side of the 7/11 and was ran by Ray and his wife Nok. Loads of oil and gas workers (myself included) used to drink in there.

How many episodes of Rab C Nesbitt did you see in there? 555

No Idea on Soi 22 of course used to be Larry's Dive, and did a great Rueben's Sandwich. Had a bit of a Hawaiian feel and dive shop attached to it.

With sand on the floor to complete the beach feel - which was quite annoying. Larry's was pretty popular as an expat meeting place, at least partly because of the relative dearth of non-hooker bars in that area.

What was the name of the bar on Nana plaza that had the tiny balcony on ( if I remember right ) the 3rd floor looking out over the Nana hotel car park ? Had about 5 days, stayed in a weird hotel down there as well, no windows in my room and the bedroom and bathroom separated by floor to ceiling glass, watching a bird have a dump was the weirdest thing ????????????????

Really? When did this happen? It was my favourite bar on PP2.

During/after the first Lockdown.

That was the one when you turned hard right from the escalator. It was right out front the short time hotel. A good place to sit and watch the world go by in Nana Plaza. I think it is just called the balcony bar.

Check Inn 99 moved to several locations after they got kicked out of the original location on Sukhumvit Rd.  They ended up on Soi 33 but are now closed.  I remember the midget with the red vest that sat by the door at the original location.

I loved those philippino girl singers. dont know what happened to them after check in. Were they playing anywhere else?

I think the band was called Music of the Heart Band. They put on a good show.  I think they left Thailand and ended up in the Caribbean but that was 1-2 years ago.

Shame. loved to go and have a few drinks and listen to those girls.

I have to admit in general I love to look at girls and I prefer if they don't talk too much. ????

How about on the second floor of the plaza? Right side escalator up, circle back right to the corner. 'The Big Mango', good bar, good chow. Eventually moved down the soi, the first alleyway on the left.

It was good down there, big premises, several floors, good value for drinks and food, and they put on some good party nights. Had a steady clientele. Don't know exactly how its demise came about, but it's one I wish were still around.

Got a feeling there was one in Jools.

But I don't think it is all that rare. Well possibly it is nowadays. ????

TV Farang don't socialise with other TV farang, there would probably be a bashing before the second bar.

I never heard of historical bars. There are some pretty old bars on soi cowboy with some historical looking hookers

The previously mentioned Madrid in Patpong is a beautiful old bar, and as historic as you get in Bangkok having been there over 50 years. Some other good old places in the area including the Crown Royal. I don't know how they survive as tastes have changed and most customers have moved on. I hope they manage to re-open after Covid.

Just watched it: Excellent video.  The scenes of Washington Sq. and Queen's Park reminded me of how we never really appreciate how unique and special such places are until they're gone.

Was that the inside of "Cactus" at "14:00"?  What a combo: great food, totally uninhibited ladies.  Sadly; John just reported that one of the long time girls was recently murdered by her husband.

How did ten years go by so quickly.

True.

You really feel like you are drinking in Thailand in those places. They have a certain essence.

One day, all we will have left is the Irish and American themed pubs. And when the hipsters come here, I am moving back to Isaan.

However, all these old pubs need to do is get a keg and sell pints for 99 baht like all the newer pubs, instead of continuing to serve small bottles at 120 - otherwise they are gonna go out of business regardless of location.

The Thermae still exists but in name only. I used to drink there till 7 am and the jukebox was the original from the Vietnam War era.

Immortalized in Christopher Moore's book, and yes I was probably right behind you at closing time.

To be fair I don't mind popping in there now on quiet nights

Did anyone drink in "Lovescene" when it was on Soi Cowboy? it would be open way after every other bar closed serving food, had some strange nights in there, with odd characters turning up way into the night. Many journalists from the Post and Nation used it as it would always be open.

Still going in a different format on soi 23, still open late but mainly for food

Great thread by the way

Is Christopher Moore still around? I met him in Nana a quarter of a century ago.

I also met the girl who was on the cover of that book at that time.

"Lovescene" was a popular spot but they also had a nasty tendency to have a heavy thumb on the fish scale and shamelessly  pad checks, especially on larger groups, perhaps a little drunk and not really paying attention.

The girls name is Suni and she is an absolute wonderful person.

She is probably close to 50 years old now and have been running a couple of bars soi 4. Most recently the first bar right after the entry to NEP.

Thanks, interesting.

I met her about 25 years ago with her farang boyfriend from that time. I think I saw them only one time.

Great that she had success - I hope also after covid.

Maybe no 0 cases end. But "end" enough for everything to open again and normal life.

The only question is how long that will take. Maybe sometime this year.

What I mean is, once we're done with 19, 20 is right around the corner. A lot of people love it...

That is statistically unlikely - but of course not impossible.

I like to think one pandemic in my lifetime should be enough.
