I like it powerful yet with good fuel economy. Ford Raptor is a bit on the too expensive side. ????

 

Ranger Wildtrak looks good, yet fool economy doesn't look too convincing with above 8l/100km

 

Looking for double cabin for 5 passengers.

 

Toyota Hilux Revo Rocco?

 

Mazda?

All brands are catching up with what a modern truck should be like, but for me it would be reliability first, so Toyota...

8l/100km isn't too bad. That's better than 12 km/l. To get better you could try the isuzu 1.9. Mitsu triton economy should be OK too. 

I like the look of the new navara 190hp twin turbo. Not sure on its economy though. The new revo has an uprated engine. Powerful but no idea on economy. 

Some details here, but new navara/bt-50 are missing.

Agreed. Service at Deeyiam is excellent too. Toyota's tend to hold their value better too if you wished to re-sell / take out finance later.

I bought my Mitsu Triton 6 years ago, love it, great car, been all over Thailand in it, from HatYai to Chiang Rai, been into Cambo 3 times, no troubles at all, had to replace the battery last year, also 1 tire, nothing else in 6 years. Very happy with Mitsu Triton.

Cabins seem tight though - too big of a compromise compared to regular sedans?

 

And is it possible to have a pick-up with a black/white number plate? There are some, but most have the green/white plates.

Is there a particular reason you want a pickup truck - carrying loads often? 

Cabins are ok, if only for two people ridign in the front. The rear is always a squeeze, and the back rest is a bit too upright for my liking.

If the pick up has a full size cab with four doors, proper seats and seat belts in the back, it's regarded and registered as a passenger vehicle and it will black on white plates.

 

The smaller cabs with no back door or just the half door are regarded as work vehicles and carry green on white plates. Legally no passengers are allowed in the rear of the cab, it's for baggage only. Many people buy them because there is less purchase tax to pay. And then carry the whole family in them!

Pickups are designed as working vehicles to carry heavy loads. The suspension designs are normally archaic - so there are big compromises in ride and handling compared to a saloon car.

I think the Fords ride and handle best but I personally wouldn't buy a Ford in Thailand. 

For me it would come down to Toyota, Isuzu...

We bought the Ford Ranger XLT 2.2 4-door back in 2016 and have enjoyed every minute of it.  More than enough power to pass on two lane roads.  Drives like a dream compared to all other brands, and I test drove them all.  The front seats are form fitting for a large man like myself and very comfortable.  Also a big factor, if the back seat is important for carrying passengers, the Ford Ranger's back seat is the most "reclined" of any of them and has good legroom.  I could ride (and have) in the back seat for long(ish) distances and have no problem with it.  As far as visibility, the Ranger is best as well.  This is important when judging the space between your truck an other vehicles on the road and, very importantly, when parking in spaces that are Thailand sized.  We have had no major mechanical problems, but the Ford dealer here in Roi Et City is attentive and will go directly to headquarters for assistance when they don't know the answers.  In short, I think you would find the Ranger series of pickup trucks great, built by the company that is the hands down leader in pickup truck sales in the world, and that matters because some of the basic technologies such as drive train, suspension and engine are transferred into Ford brands worldwide.

 

I have no opinion about Ford cars in Thailand and that is not the question anyway.  But Ford trucks are great, IMHO.

I just bought New it’s 5 month old , Toyota Revo Rocco , I love its Black Automatic 6 gear standard transmission was too much shifting got automatic for long journeys, I bought Toyota have parts all over , I will say mot many after market accessories unlike Ford had so many Extras , but I wait for extras to be produced

Green plates only for pickup with two doors, the four doors are consider to be in the car category standard with white and black numbe

I like the Height factor in Trucks in Thailand you. , you need it for driving in Thailand, too many rear - Enders on Saloon cars

I've posted before about my purchase in 2018, Toyota Hilux although I look at all the other pickup at the Bangkok Car show I had already settle on Toyota for personal reason.

 

I think when a person think about power fuel goes out the window when I was still living in U.S. and got myself a Toyota Tuntra pretty much a RV I was thinking about fuel I was just thinking bigger the better get the hell out of my way!

 

Here in Thailand a bit of a different story getting old you don't need a lot of power to kill yourself. Although I could easily afford the top model 4x4 Rocco I didn't really like all the logo stuff marking along with the rear roll bar? I did like the fact it had 18 inch rims compared to the 17 standard of course it comes at 2.8

 

I ended up Model E plus out the door with all the trimming 860,000 from the list 890,000 black letter 2.4 7 speed Auto. 2x4. After two years plus I only have 11,000 Kilos only use it to travel up country not really sure of the tank capacity but 750 Kilos up to the farm I still have over a quarter tank.

The Aussie and Kiwi review sites (which absolutely love their utes) are putting the  new Isuzu and Mazda at the top of the rankings. They are the same platform and identical in many ways. Mazda has a more plush interior, Isuzu is a bit more rought and tumble. Comes down to personal preference. Most seem to agree these two look the best, both inside and out.

 

Ford wins with the best on road handling still. Which is quite impressive considering it's age, and it's weight (it's easily the heaviest at 2.2k kgs). This is in contrast to the new Toyota, which is the most skittery and least refined to drive on a regular road with an unladen tray.

 

The reasons to buy the Mitsubishi are price, and turning circle. You save a fully metre when doing a u-turn, which could be big plus on Thai roads. Otherwise you are better looking at the other trucks above.

 

Nissan doesn't get a look in because while the new exterior upgrades are very attractive, the interior is perhaps the oldest looking of the lot, Thailand only has the old 2.3l engine variant, and because of tax restrictions, you can get the rear spring version here (which was the one that handles really well).

My 2015 Ford Ranger XLT 2.2, automatic transmission (includes Sport mode) with extra cab, (small back seat) was purchased new in early 2016. It has almost 100,000 km on it with many long trips to the North and South. To date, I have replaced the battery after 3 years, with regular maintenance per the service schedule. It is used daily to carry small to heavy loads. Last week this included my wife delivering to customers multiple 16 bag loads of compost at 50kgs per bag, carrying 6-80cm concrete rings, a load of 80-1.5 meters plants in one trip and more... The smaller engine has good over all power and steady fuel economy over a range of driving conditions and loads, and can easily reach 130 km/hr+ if not paying attention.  The stock suspension is very comfortable under normal driving conditions, though under a heavy load it is a bit soft and there is an increase in braking distance. 

 

For my body size (184 ht, 98 kgs), the Ford fits my larger frame and shoulders with the Toyota being a bit small for me. In the USA I owned the Toyota Tacoma 4x4 with extra cab, (US version of the Revo), and while it was a great pickup, it was again a bit smaller for a comfortable fit.

Overall, I am very happy with the Ford Ranger, and have had excellent service at most dealers, (one bad regular service experience during the Covid lockdown at an dealer in another province).

 

I also like the Toyota, and it is an excellent choice, though I prefer the styling of the Ford Ranger (Japanese/Aussie team?). In the end, select the pickup that best your lifestyle, budget, is comfortable for you and has the features your want.

I agree that pickup trucks are work vehicles . Yet they are dressed up as sports cars with a speed capability that many drivers here in Thailand take to the maximum with fatal consequences . I think the speed should be controlled on these type of vehicles to 100 km per hour .

Navara, good allrounder and will do Kk Bkk easily on a full tank, and it will get up and go when required, i took my last one to 210.000 km with only a new intercooler (stone damage) and of course service things.
