The Royal Thai Navy has announced the launch of a new Facebook page dedicated to submarines.

The new page, which appeared on the social network on Thursday, has been created to provide accurate information about Thailand’s submarines, Navy spokesperson Chettha Jaipiem said.

The page will share facts and information in order to raise people’s awareness and combat the spread of misinformation about the Navy’s submarines.

The page will also act as a platform where interesting news articles, research and documentaries about submarines will be shared.

The Navy and submarines is a controversial issue in Thailand.

In 2014, the military government decided Thailand was in much need of a fleet of submarines.

Up until then Thailand hadn't owned any submarines since 1951.

In 2015, the government approved a plan to  buy three Yuan Class S26T submarines from China.

Despite Prime Minister Prayuth revealing that Thailand would only be required to pay for two submarines - with the third being a “free gift”, the total cost of the purchase was expected to be in excess of 22.5 billion baht, approx $723.5 million.

In August 2020, a parliamentary committee approved the purchase with payment set to be made in seven annual instalments, which had been due to start this year.

However, following a huge backlash by the Thai public, Prime Minister Prayuth ordered the Navy to delay the purchase.

While payment to China was delayed, Thailand was not able to cancel the deal altogether, with the PM saying the submarines were vital to Thailand’s long term defences.

“We can’t stop, this is part of the force development plan,” Prayuth said at the time.

They deserve this song.

''Vital to Thailands Defences''    I hope not as they will never be used other than on Navy open days !

Wait, until they start their own submarines, not Chinese copies. Made in Thailand is an International recognized proof for highest quality.

They'll have ten nuclear reactors that run on Somtham Lao producing 0.004 kilowatt.

And I just thought they'd hit rock bottom with the vaccin program....

New subs sign of troubles to come? This was published in the Bangkok Post 13/1/2020 not sure if it was referring to the fact that they are made in China ! I mean we all know how reliable things are from there

Unless you're a foreigner of course.

I wasn't allowed on the aircraft carrier at Sattahip nearly twenty years ago during an open day. My Thai girlfriend was. I asked the sailor who prevented me going on board, why?

He said it was because I was a foreigner. I pointed out there were half a dozen Chinese had just walked up the gangway to get on board before me. They weren't barred.

The sailor said that Chinese were OK, but not foreigners.

IIRC didn't the Thai Navy buy the aircraft carrier second hand from the Canadian Navy?

The Thai Navy must have disinfected it first.

You should've borrowed a Harrier jumpjet then landed it on the deck , cut the engine and said " how'd you like them apples Somchai " ..

No, it was ordered new and constructed in Spain for the Thai Navy.  A complete waste of time and money, but it was new.

Thanks for correcting me.

Can you tell me if there was an-Canadian ship bought by the Thai Navy?

I must be getting confused - as well as old.

Honestly I have no idea, but from searching it appears they have one Canadian tug boat.

Reason for the Facebook page is so prospective crew members can search Facebook in the hope of finding out  what does this BIG lever do.:cheesy:

Run silent, run deep. With a depth of 58 meters in its waters, Thailand is the only sub power able to sit on the bottom and see what's going on with a periscope.

Most Thais can't swim....can't see it's going to be easy getting Thais to go underwater in a tin can!

They might hit rock bottom in the Gulf of Thailand as the water is not that deep.

The subs will be used on the borders to stop the Burmese walking over

Surely that will just assist the Burmese, as they could use the sub as a stepping point when they cross the river.
