The average price of beer costs more in Bangkok than in Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Brussels and Berlin, a new study has revealed.

According to the World Beer Index 2021, the average price of a 330ml bottle of beer in Bangkok is USD$4.82, approximately 149 THB.

The World Beer Index from Expensivity calculated the average price of a bottle of beer in 58 countries bought from either a supermarket or a hotel bar.

Thailand-particularly Bangkok- was  ranked in 37th place overall with beer prices ranging from $0.94 (29 THB) in supermarkets to $8.70 (269 THB) in hotel bars.

Out of the other ASEAN countries to feature in the study, only Singapore was found to be more expensive than Thailand, with the average price of a beer costing $5.17.

This was followed by Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur-$4.74), the Philippines (Manilla-$4.82) and Indonesia (Jakarta-$3.17).

South Africa's capital cities Pretoria, Bloemfontein, and Cape Town have the cheapest beer with an average price of $1.68. The study said the culture of bulk buying beer in South Africa contributed to its low average price.

Following South Africa is Ukraine (Kyiv), Argentina (Buenos Aires), Bosnia and Herzegovina (Saravejo), Ghana (Acra), Tunisia (Tunis), Georgia (Tbilisi), Chile (Santiago), and Czech Republic (Prague).

Meanwhile, Qatar (Doha) emerged as the city with the most expensive beer price tag with a whopping average of $11.26 per bottle. Football fans take note.

“A beer in Qatar is expensive. The mostly Muslim country introduced a 100% tax on alcohol imports ahead of the 2022 World Cup, and visitors need a special permit to drink alcohol,” the report stated.

It is also worthing pointing out that there were a few notable exceptions to the study, such as  Australia, New Zealand and Ireland (yes, Ireland!). How can you have a study on beer consumption without including the Irish?

4 tins of normal strength lager in Blackpool is £2.15, 2 litres of cider £1.99 - no wonder there's so many alcoholics.

Puts some happiness in being stuck here

I'm currently in the UK drinking a can of Stella Artois. I bought a box of 18 X 440ml cans for £13 in Tescos. £0.72  a can.

Obviously pub/bar and supermarket prices are different.

Just as well, as it is there's enough inebriated people driving around causing horrendous road toll every year...

If they used per capita income as part of the equation Bangkok would be way over the top.

In fairness though, a bottle of 100 Pipers whiskey is cheaper in Thailand than an equivalent bottle of 25 year old single malt scotch would be anywhere else in the world...

Beer lao dark is only 49 baht now in Tops, where do they get 149 baht from for a small bottle? one or two imports maybe.

A six pack has always been the most expensive way to buy beer in Oz, for $40 you can buy a case (24)

Many here don't live in Bangkok, and a reasonable, affordable lifestyle is easily available elsewhere in the country, without paying ridiculous inflated prices.

hmmmm ... they seemed to have missed on Laos in this study, "Beer Lao" which won the Time Magazine award for the best beer in South East Asia some years back, still only cost us locals $10,68 for a box of 12 large bottles, equating to $0.89c per bottle (Hot or cold) or approx. 28 Baht a bottle ... of course you can pay more in a bar or fancy Hotel, but generally speaking, $1 or 31 Baht will get you a full sized icy cold bottle of beer served on the banks of the Mekong !  Carlsberg, Heineken, Tiger, and a few other local made brands, don't follow that far behind in price either (mainly because they are also brewed here ... for the Asian market)

.... and not forgetting the Irish .... In Vientiane, we pay approx. 195 Baht for a pint of drought Guinness in a bar ... Wednesdays, buy two get one free .... die la mair !

How much for a bottle of rice whiskey?

The old conspiracy theory; the Thai government was so connected at the hip to revenue generated by liquor or spirits manufacturers, as beer drinking was thought a threat to this revenue stream, excessive taxes were placed on it. That was back in the days of Mekong, Lao Khao, vs Beer Sing & Kloster. However it still works today in the age of Sangsom, 100 pipers Gilbeys vs Leo & Chang.

This is why the families that own Singha and Chang are filthy rich; they can buy the necessary laws to restrict competition, overcharge for their swill product, and stay filthy rich.

Pricing of anything here is down to half a dozen families AKA cartels from beer to paint.

obviously not on beer though eh. something that seems to be a huge staple in many a poster diet here on TV.

This is extremely groundbreaking research, very important. The researchers who conducted it should receive the Noble Price.
