Bangkok infection rate ‘out of control’ as 1 in 5 test positive

 

The Rural Doctors Society (RDS) warned on Friday that the infection rate in Bangkok communities has reached 19 per cent, indicating that the outbreak is now out of control in the capital.

 

DS is working with the National Health Security Office (NHSO) on active case finding in over 30 Bangkok communities that have never before been investigated by the Public Health Ministry. Eleven teams of doctors have been giving swab tests at 14 locations with a target of testing 15,000 people in total.

Needs to be 1.5 million a week nationally. 1 mil for BKK and 500k for the provinces. This would really show just how undercounted the numbers are and how deep in the **** Thailand really is.

The antibody cocktail, which is a product jointly developed by Roche and Regeneron, is proven to be effective in treating patients aged 12 and above, with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms. The antibody cocktail can also be used to treat patients who are at high risk of severe or progressing to severe COVID-19, such as the elderly and people with obesity or other chronic diseases.

The UK is testing 1.3 million a day and lateral flow tests to be done at home are provided free. Why are these people dawdling?

13 million AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccine doses to be administered in Thailand by end of August

 

8 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine and 5 million doses of Sinovac vaccine are being administered through to the end of August 2021, while 15.38 million doses, mainly of the same two makes, have been administered in Thailand to date, according to the Prime Minister’s Operations Centre today (Friday).

 

The government is mostly aiming at inoculating people aged 60 and over and those with any of the seven underlying diseases this month and next, according to the centre’s Facebook page, with 33% of the 13 million doses, counted from July 19th, to be administered to people living in 11 provinces in the COVID-19 “Dark Red” and “Red” zones.

 

15% are for those in the social security fund and those who are part of driving the economy. 12% are for those working for government agencies. 3% are booster doses for medical personnel. 12% are to be used as second doses (AstraZeneca). 10% are for those living in other “Red” zone provinces and other provinces preparing to reopen to tourists. 15% are for those living in the remaining 48 provinces.

As pointed out earlier the form to register for travel is not robust.

Did they ban buses out of Bangkok? That would be sensible restriction.

I just returned to Bangkok from Rayong. The motorway going both ways was fairly busy. There were no checkpoints whatsoever so registering (which I did) was rather pointless.

People can still travel between provinces, supposedly, if they've registered and/or have some legitimate reason to be doing so.

The long weekeneders already started arriving here in Hua Hin, nobody reported anything, they're out and about, I know who some of them are and I've seen them.

 

They will be out and about in the restaurants each night as well.

Phuket Steps up Covid-19 Measurers

 

PHUKET, July 23 (TNA) – Phuket is ramping up Covid-19 control measures to screen inbound travellers.

 

The Phuket communicable disease committee resolved to step up measures, requiring incoming travellers to show proof of having fully vaccinated and having taken a negative swab within 72 hours before arrival. The new measures will be put into effect from July 25 – Aug 2.

 

The island reported on Friday 20 new Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours. So far, there were more than 9,000 tourists, arriving under the Phuket Sandbox model. The province found 21 tourists being infected with coronavirus.   (TNA)

An Indian scientist working at Chulalongkorn University presented at the FCCT's discussion last night.  He said they were working on a system of detection of COVID in sewage which works vert well in places like HK and Australia.  If you find an infected sample, you can zoon in to the building or street and test everyone. Bangkok has limitations as most houses have cess pools rather than piped sewage but it can still be done and they have been doing it since last year.  They showed that the pandemic was constantly in Bangkok sewage last year when there were zero cases reported.  Then in December they saw cases rapidly rising, indicating that the second wave was about to start which it did. 

 

Apparently the university tried to interest the government in its research and findings but, unsurprisingly, there was zero interest from the dozy bureaucrats, except from the Phuket sandbox project which thought it might be able to help bring a few more billions into Thailand. 

 

He also has a model to estimate infection numbers based on what they are seeing in the sewage.  Their latest estimate for Greater Bangkok is that  6% of the population is currently infected.  Depending on what population number you use, that would be 500,000-600,000.  On that basis new infections nationwide must be far higher than 15,000 or so a day.  Must be at least 45,000 at the moment, if not 60,000.  The UK has over 50,000 but is testing 1.3m a day, whereas Thailand is probably testing not much more than 100,000 a day.

Few of the experts keep referring back to mistake of Song Kran from time to time.

I hope it's not the case but Saturday and later today (Friday) may very well see mass exodus from Bangkok. Obviously places such as Isan high on destination list. 

This MoPH graphic says Thailand has had a per capita rate of 10 COVID deaths per million population over the past week.

 

In comparison, the same per capita COVID death rate (based on officially reported numbers) for other countries has been:

--Myanmar, 33

--Indonesia, 32

--Malaysia, 29

--Cambodia, 10

--UK, 6

--USA, 5

--Vietnam, 2

 

So in other words, Thailand right now has double the per capita COVID death rate compared to the U.S. and the U.K, but still is having fewer per capita deaths than its neighbors such as Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Of course, they're going to be lucky to find 5% of current infections and that's if they're trying to find as many as possible.

 

If 14,575 is 5% of the unknowable number of actual infections then 100% will be 58,300 - per day - and this is now.

 

The above 5% number comes from something quoted by the UK chief scientist when he was announcing record figures, he said they knew for sure that the detection rate despite massive efforts is only going to be between 5% and 10%.

 

The effort to find new cases here is what I would call 'limited' - and it appears to be driven by the capacity of the covid prison camps.

Over 60s were supposed to be all vaccinated with one shot of AZ by the end of July.  Then under 60s would start.  So they are way behind schedule for the most ulnerable groups.  

 

No word on what will happen to scheduled second shots of AZ.  Delaying them for 12 weeks means that immunity will be extremely low by then and almost zero after then.  Now they are giving second shots of AZ three weeks after a first shot of Sinovac which means those people are getting the second shots of people who have had one shot of AZ.

It is kind of everywhere now.

Due to the severe shortage of life-saving medical equipment, such as ventilators, the management of Thammasat University hospital has decided to apply a “Withhold Intubation Rule” for severe COVID-19 patients who are over 75 years old and who are also suffering from AIDS or incurable cancer or are at the end of life or in the last stage of clinical frailty state (increased vulnerability to poor resolution of homoeostasis after a stressor event, which increases the risk of adverse outcome).

 

The hospital’s management said in a statement yesterday that, due to the shortage of medical personnel and medical equipment in the wake of overcrowding in the hospital, doctors responsible for providing treatment will not put some severe cases of COVID-19 on ventilators, but will focus on palliative care under two conditions.
