Thai police detain man over death of Swiss tourist

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai police on Saturday said that a man had been taken into custody for the death of a Swiss tourist on the island of Phuket earlier this week.

"In Phuket, we have good news. It's finished," police chief Suwat Jangyodsuk told reporters.

He said a suspect had been detained, but did not give further details when responding to questions from reporters.

The body of a 57-year-old Swiss tourist was found on Thursday near a waterfall on the resort island, with signs she had died of unnatural causes, officials said on Friday.

The woman arrived on the island on July 13 under the "Phuket Sandbox" scheme, a pilot project to allow in vaccinated foreign tourists to help revive a sector decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The suspect is a 27-year-old native of Phuket, two police sources told Reuters.

A news conference with more details of the investigation is scheduled for Sunday.

As a 13 year prison visitor, the wisest words I ever heard outside a prison from a wrinkled faced old Thai lady was "This prison isn't full of guilty people. It is full of poor people." She was right.

After an "intensive" interrogation is being quoted in the Thai press. I do hope they have got it right but one always has a doubt in the back of ones mind with the Thai plod.

And what has this proven? Thailand is a "safe" place for women solo travellers? I think not.

It amazes me how quick these cops can grab someone, oh that's right, grab someone, anyone before it's too late, we must tell them it's safe here in the LOS.

I hope I am wrong and that this guy is not just a scape goat as I don't have confidence in the cops here.

Will be gladly proven wrong and eat humble pie.

He has already confessed but whether or not that was under duress, I guess we'll never know.

As a 13 year prison visitor, the wisest words I ever heard outside a prison from a wrinkled faced old Thai lady was "This prison isn't full of guilty people. It is full of poor people." She was right.

The rich pay their way off, the well to do have a fighting chance with a good lawyer, given the prosecution are none too bright, nor the judges come to that,

The accused poor are as good as hung, the day the cops announce this is the man.

Thai justice, which strangely never finds any wrongdoing by bent cops, or politicians unless they have been overthrown in a coup, normally as an ends to justify the means.

I have been on the wrong end of this when the same family name was good enough for the cops to broadcast an arrest.

When they got it right and got the right fella, they broadcast that too, but never said sorry for their original mistake.

Photos and names of unconvicted accused should not be made public unless the evidence is overwhelming, and probably not even then as it could taint potential witnesses.

Try telling that to photo happy cops though.

"we have good news. It's finished"

Obviously a very experienced detective. He has ensured that all other possibilities are impossible and that this guy was not forced to confess. Excellent work!

This guy has also confessed to driving a grey Ferrari in Thong Lo on the night in question.

It was an impulsive crime. The suspect was probably on a meth bender and probably didn't understand the extent of what he did by the time the cops arrived.

I see no reason to be skeptical of this suspect. They got someone within the first 48.
