Thailand on Wednesday (August 18) reported 20,515 new COVID-19 cases and 312 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

● 20,267 new infections

● 248 prison / prison infections

● 22,682 recoveries

Wednesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 98,957 with 8,285 deaths. (Total infections since April 1: 940,094)

The news comes as Thailand will purchase an additional 12 million doses of Sinovac's coronavirus vaccine to try to expedite its rollout, a senior official said on Tuesday, despite concerns over its efficacy against the Delta variant of COVID-19.

Thailand's strategy had planned to use mainly locally produced AstraZeneca vaccines but with supply short of the government's target, Sinovac shots are being used in a mix-and-match approach to inoculate the population faster.

The mass vaccination campaign started in June but the rollout is being hastened by Thailand's worst coronavirus wave so far, which is challenging Bangkok's healthcare system at a time when just 7.3% of the population has been fully vaccinated.

All time high of 312 covid deaths and with rapid positive tests its also an unofficial all time high of 27,725 cases over the last 24 hours.

Official testing numbers yesterday for PCR 50,151

PCR tests, total of 20,515 official new infections, with 248 of those from prison and 20,267 from community.

Rapid tests positive cases, 7,210 bringing the unofficial total to 27,725, a new high. The charts do not reflect growing trend as the rapid tests are not included.

Positivity rates are still extremely high which demonstrates that the real numbers of positive cases are not being found and far more testing is needed.

Rolling 7 day average (up to 15th Aug) which includes prison cases and bar chart of community cases from daily official announcements.

with over 300 now, how the pick of this wave, expected sometimes at the end of September, will look like? That's over a month of daily rises by tens of deaths per day

Here we go folks those 20k numbers are now unfortunately showing the increase in deaths.  One does not come without the other and my condolences to all. Stay safe.

The numbers of those released may seem to be higher than new cases, yet the hospitals are still taking in patients to replace those released with many more waiting. The cases of positives from the ATK test who need treatment but also may die at home is the tell all and it would be a nice Stat to see as well.

So far this month there have been 353,643 new infections and 3,295 fatalities (official numbers). Friday will see Thailand move into the small 1,000,000 + infections group of countries and next wk Thailand will be in the top 30 on the covid charts. If antigen positives were counted new infections per capita sees Thailand in the number 2 spot just behind Iran.

A good friend of my gf’s tested positive from a routine test at the factory she works in ( electronics factory in Navanakorn ).

The factory sent her to the hospital who told her to go home ( self isolation ) then next day showed up with a van and took her to The Idle Residence ( former ASQ in Navanakorn ) where she has to stay for 10 days, sharing a room with 2 others and sleeping on the sofa !!

A quick call to check availability at the hospital and then self isolation would have been the safer route I think ????

She has slight symptoms of coughing , sore throat and headaches.

Why are they not included?

If Rapid Tests are that inaccurate then why have them.

They should be included.

Because numbers would look bad.

Anyway deaths show the real picture worse and worse.

Perhaps along with ICU and Ventilators are/should be accurate.

Thinking many just glance at each day positive numbers as they are not accurate indicator without community wide testing.

This is what it would look like if they were included. Blue are the official community cases (not including prisons). Green is the community cases + positive rapid tests.

Closing in on 30k cases when combined in the next week possibly, of course that's my take on it.

Many people said it before they wont use the rapid test data as it would make them look bad. Just like they exclude prison. They seem to pull all kind of stunts to stay lower then they actually are. Probably to make sure they wont be seen to dangerous and make travel harder for tourists to Phuket sandbox. (going back and into quarantine at home country is no fun)

I dont even know what to say… Is there any other country in the world that have a higher positivity rate?

The majority of the tests here is even by walk-ins, meaning the initiative was taken by that tested persons own self.

Its just too frustrating especially since there are quite a few ppl here that been saying this would happen many months ago. Yet, nobody listened and no one did anything about it.

Correct i look at the ICU and Ventilator levels. That is far more important as it shows the occupancy level of critical care. Add to that death numbers and you see its getting worse. Do have to note deaths come from an earlier infection so they lag.

This isn't a must read for me anymore - the cases could be 100k per day but we will never truly know what they are - the country is too.... different?  Nice way of putting it.  ????

I'd even go by the death toll but how many are going and not being counted?  Nobody really  knows what is going on.

The statistics are fairly meaningless, especially as no-one seems to believe them, but the remarks and comments are interesting.

Is anyone really surprised that there are now anti protests taking place on a daily basis against the Covid-19 mismangement and incompetence by the govt.

Some more positive signs going forwards despite the increasing death rate.
New cases down and vaccination daily dose rate indicate 70% of population could be double dosed within 6 months.
New Sinovac purchase will support that target.
