Thailand's Royal Thai Police spokesman spoke to the nation yesterday about people who take naked still shots of partners or who film themselves and their lovers having sex.

 

Pol Col Siriwat Deephor said some people did this to look at later, reported Daily News.

 

But it could lead to all sorts of trouble. 

 

Files on phones and computers could find their way onto the internet, he said, without the owner's permission.

 

This could happen in malware attacks, when phones were lost, repaired or sold on or as revenge porn.

 

Here's how to protect yourself, he advocated to his "Thai brothers and sisters":

 

1. Don't film yourself in the first place. You may love the other person now but consider what might happen if you split up acrimoniously. 

 

The images and videos could be used as weapons for revenge, extortion, threats and defamation. 

 

2. Protect yourself from malware and cyber attack.

 

3. Clean your data and remove images and videos when selling phones or having them repaired. 

 

He said that crime related to illegally putting images and video on the internet could see people jailed for a year and/or fined 20,000 baht.

One reason I prefer Thailand over many other retirement countries (eg Malaysia, Indonesia, Kenya etc.) is that Thailand doesn't make such a big deal out of porn. If I am not mistaken in TH one is allowed to have sex pics on one's phone.

Actually I don't think it's legal on your phone either.

I remember a case long ago about some foreigner who got beat up in his hotel room. Seems he'd picked up a "Beach Road Special" who agreed to let him film them having sex for 3,000 baht.
Except afterwards he only gave her 2,000. She apparently stormed out, got the boyfriend and came back. Boyfriend beats the foreigner, cops show up, cops check foreigner's phone/laptop, find the movie (and more) and guess who ends up arrested ?
(Hint, it wasn't the boyfriend !)

Also, keep in mind that in some places, like Canada, when you arrive at the airport supposedly the minimum wage "Border Security" types can demand you unlock your phone so they can examine it for illegal images. (Technically they aren't allowed to access the internet or ask for passwords to Facebook or email accounts, but a lot of people have "automatic log-ins" so they could easily see what you may have posted online even though they aren't allowed to look there.)

(It's been argued that its against a person's rights for them to do what amounts to a "warrantless search" but so far no one has successfully fought it in court as far as I know. In Canada.)

Laws vary from country to country and you can guarantee that you do not have a clue what they can and can't do when you fly "back home".

That will free up most of my memory on my phone. 

Amazing that this cop can even hold his head up high. When the vast majority of his fellow cops are simply busy working their franchises for profit, and barely engaging in law enforcement, it is the people who should be threatening them with action, not the other way around.

 

At least 99% of us see how fake, insincere, and transparent these creeps are. The audacity to even be threatening the people over something like this, at this time.

If you selling or giving away your phone, do a full factory reset. Just "deleted is not completely deleted the data is still there and can be restored with the proper tools.

Señal decade ago, I remember we had access to programs which would overwrite your storage two or three times. Whatever happened to that idea or is it no longer necessary?

I don't understand the attack on this officer by some members of this forum. He is giving good advice to couples, not men and prostitutes. He isn't saying he will lock you up for taking the video's/pictures of yourself and your loved one. He is saying be careful that those video's/pictures do not get disseminated to a wider audience, which can cause hurt to one or other of the parties, usually the woman (and I note that all the people complaining are men). It is good advice which has also been given in the UK by women's support groups. The incidence of 'Revenge Porn' is increasing where jilted childish and vicious men post videos on websites to shame their ex's. He is speaking primarily to women who are usually the victims when such videos are released.
