Torrenting in Thailand riskless; Internetprovider

Recommended Posts

My take on this is as long as you download Movies/tv series/games/music that are not Thai movies then you will never get a problem.

If you download Thai movies they don't like that but anything western (no not Clint Eastwood) then your good to go.

Imind you if you download thai series/movies then you deserve to get caught.

That said i would say any American remakes of U.k tv series should also get you a large fine(The office springs to mind)

Any thoughts on ISPs and Stremio?

It's basically torrenting directly to streaming.

I use Stremio and it's one of my first places to check for new movies,  and it's as you say, streaming not downloading.  As to the OP question about torrenting, I've done it for years without a VPN or police knocks at my door, but just for movies not programs, apps, or porn.

I think stremio is great especially for things that you watch regularly like series that are not dropped all at once and shows like Daily Show / Colbert. But as it directly accesses torrent sites to source the streaming, I see it is a kind of a wonderful combination of both.

I wonder why we don't seem to hear about Stemio very often here. I learned about it from an expat in Colombia.

You do not need a vpn however there are many sites where you can stream stuff these days. Therefore there is no need to bittorrent or download the items.

Depends. Our internet is hit and miss. Especially when trying to stream. I DL 4k movies. They tend not to stream well, especially the audio. Love it in full surround sound.

I always use a VPN for anything done on the net.  The main reason I use a VPN is not that I am worried about a lawsuit from a movie owner yet because it prevents hacking into my finances.

You have to remember that any ISP can look up your activity if they want to or are requested to.

No they cant look it up if they want to

They can see the data volume /rate, but the data itself is encrypted if using a VPN. That's the main point after all.

I will never understand why somebody intelligent enough to even ask a question like the OP doesn't use a VPN by reflex.

I got ExpressVPN nearly ten years ago and would never consider using the web without it now. There are a number of advantages to having one that go beyond simple privacy.

I have their VPN image on my router so ALL my ethernet or wifi traffic is encrypted.

It's $10/month well spent. Using free ones is a fool's game. If it's free then you are the product they sell.

It seems that a lot of people in here does not understand that.

I believe it is sort of redundant now as most of the connections to important sites are encrypted now. You simply shouldn't use a site with personal information if it is not using https. The exception for using a VPN is if you are doing something illegal or if you want to bypass restrictions in a country.

Besides, the traffic a VPN hides from the ISP can be seen by the VPN service provider; I do trust most ISPs much more than I trust a VPN service provider.

Agree. Although paying money does not mean they will keep your records safe. As far as I know, ExpressVPN is now owned by a company that in the past have sold data about ther users. That said, I use ExpressVPN too for some things; however, I disconnect the VPN as soon as I am done.

where do people have problems when downloading torrents ?!

In Denmark. When I am in Thailand, I rent out my apartment. A couple of years ago, I got a letter from a lawyer with information of what was downloaded, the date, and which client was used. I could prove that I was not in Denmark at the time; thus, they waived the claim.

My take.

Use any local isp without VPN but don't download porn.

Why wouldn't I download porn? Just today downloaded several GB of JAV from Pornhub. Have been doing it for 20years now.... here and in Saudi Arabia... although is Saudi was with VPN, but once the torrent was going I could disconnect the VPN.

I always use VPN, problem is that when you have IP assigned by your ISP, like a fiber modem, ISP will be able to monitor you even if you use VPN

I don't agree with that. Once you are connected to your VPN (NordVPN in my case), the ISP (3BB in my case) can no longer monitor which sites you visit, since you have a new IP address assigned by your VPN provider.

Do you pay? My movie downloads can easily be 20gb or more. TV shows average 5 to 7gb. Or more!

The USA for one.

When I got into torrents about ten years ago I learned the hard way. I got multiple threats from my ISP, Comcast /Xfinity about downloading copyright material.

That started me on an evaluation of VPN. I tested their claims by using their products to torrent. On all except Expressvpn I got nastygrams. I've been with Express ever since.

A friend in the US got a notice from a lawyer regarding torrenting his client's vids (Southern California porn producer).  They made it sound like Elliot Ness was on his way to the house.  They also spelled out the full indiscreet name of the vid to cause maximum embarrassment and it appeared often in the text.  It was sent to the ISP and they forwarded it to him, lawyer demanding to know his name, address etc.  Yeah, sure.  The ISP's own message to him was to knock it off or they will cancel his account, but no threat by the ISP to comply with the shyster.  Some searching revealed that this "law firm" was making a cottage industry of doing this.  A few weeks later he got another warning, in this case the client was HBO.  It was not due to visiting websites, but to the actual torrent connections.  So if in the US yes, VPN is the way to go.

When you connect to a VPN your ISP may not be able to track your connections, but they can tell that you are connecting to something and they tally the amount of data you transfer through it.  Same thing with Tor: they can't track what you are doing but they know you are connected to Tor routing.

Another handy bit provided by VPNs is you can connect via another country to a site that would block connections from the country you are physically in.

Smart move. I was in Pattaya for 3 months this year. Did some banking on my MacBook on my ASQ and hotel Wifi. Someone hacked my account, and tried to use my credit card. My bank notified me immediately, and temporarily suspended my card. Which stressed me out big time, as I was using the card for everything. Thankfully I had a back-up debit card, or I would have been screwed big time. Eventually got it resolved, then started using a VPN (Proton). No issues after that. Am returning again soon, will try Nord next time. I've heard Express is great.
